I had a newer version of these as a kid 10-15 years ago and they worked a LOT better than these did. Also a lot larger of a variety. Basically normal Crayolas but with a colour changing thing. Edit: Quick looked online to see if I could find them and link them; couldn't find anything. Huh.
There was an old crayola set that came with special glasses, they would make your drawings include depth depending on the color! Not sure it would make a good video, but they’re really interesting
I think these likely use an acid base reaction with an indicator in the crayon pigment. The clear change crayon probably is really acidic or really basic or whatever and affects the ph of the crayon making it change color in response.
I used to have these as a kid, and as I recall the blue and pink used to be a LOT more vibrant. I think the wax must have dried out due to the pigments used on them or something? Idk. I used to really love these, and the color changing markers too.
@@KaseyTheGolden I would definitely call the blue and nearly magenta vibrant on camera! @snuzzle my question is, as a kid did the other colors/color changing appear more vibrant or were they portrayed accurately in 2023 video??
Snuzzle's turn, because I forgot YT is like that lmao.I would definitely call the blue and nearly magenta vibrant on camera! My question for you would be; as a kid did the other colors/color changing appear more vibrant or were they portrayed accurately in 2023 video??
I had markers that were basically the same thing (colours a little different, but most had the same combinations) and they worked almost too well. Like, they worked for years. If only I didn't throw them out once they stopped working, then I'd at least have them to see what brand they were from.
I think an oil based marker or a Posca pen can save the lineart. I think these crayons would be great for illustration backgrounds. Maybe the other colours aren't working as well because of their age? It would be interesting to do an experiment with old stock versus new stock. That would be an impossibility with these particular crayons, but I think this is a control worth exploring.
I think it's probably a pH thing - did you ever do the cabbage dye experiment or use pH strips? The blue to magenta is exactly those colours, and I'd be willing to bet the colour changing crayons are probably a string acid or base (not sure which whoops)
So confession time when I was in high school in the 90s, I went through a Crayola color change phase and I remember these crowns not really working for me
Can you do this again but after using the color changer apply heat? My brain just keeps wondering if heating it after applying the color changer will react and make the change happen more drastically.
oh! i think i remember the translucent color changing crayons being in the big crayon tubs my school had when i was super young. the ones that changed color had been lost or used long before
I almost wish you had tested out trying the changer on the paper first and then layering the color on top to see if it would work better. I kind of doubt there would have been much of a difference, but it would have been fun to try
Awesome work, as always, Kasey! I wonder. Do you think that scratching off some of the excess wax where you wanted to put down a other color on top would help? I used to do that with crayons and each colored pencils. If the wax just smoodged because it got warm from friction and created these globs of color nonsense I would just scratch off the excess wax underneath where I wanted to add another color first and it helped! Love you from indiana! xo
Beautiful finished piece ! I found a 64 set of crayons and don’t have the motivation or inspiration to start drawing a piece with only crayons. And when I see your art work it just makes me want to buy don’t know how to 😂
The look of the color changing crayons makes me wonder if the box got overheated at some point. If it's not enough to melt them, it can really change how the color looks and goes down, and might explain some of the weirdness.
Hullo Kasey, I do enjoy watching your videos and as a long time subscriber, I am a fan of your crayon works too! I am in truth missing your ANT content but I understand how that goes. I am still hoping for a book someday, Perhaps a part coffee table book and color with me kind of book? Any news on that front? I am just curious. I do hope you and Dave are doing well and staying safe up there in "The Great White North"! Sorry that is a very dated reference! BE well!
In January, Kasey made a video about finally completing all the illustrations for her ant book this year. If she doesn’t finish by the 31st of December, we get to pick a punishment. A very big motivator, indeed! So hopefully we’ll see a book by the end of this year or the beginning of next year! Though I do believe she has said it will be more of an illustration/where’s Waldo type book with very busy illustrations with lots of details to look at, as opposed to a coloring book. Sorry if you knew all this already!!
FINALLY I GOT TO A VID EARLY :D. Dang kasey really truing to push year of the crayons huh lol. This looks awesome tho you can take kids supplies and make a masterpiece and i can barely make ART with professional supplies :,) as always great art and awesome video.
3:30 alright I paused to make a comment before I watch if it worked or not. This color changing technology sounds so crazy I am prepared to be disappointed. Edit oh wow, it does work! The magenta was my favorite
The finished drawing is so perfect in crayon! It's like a child's imagination come true
And I love it for that! Thanks!

Probably had to change the formula due to harmful chemicals
Lifting the crayon crumbs with the tape is my type of ASMR. You did really well with the crayons despite their limitations!
There was an old crayola set that came with special glasses, they would make your drawings include depth depending on the color! Not sure it would make a good video, but they’re really interesting
Ohh that sounds cool! Were they like 3d glasses?
I think these likely use an acid base reaction with an indicator in the crayon pigment. The clear change crayon probably is really acidic or really basic or whatever and affects the ph of the crayon making it change color in response.
Yeah the blue to magenta SCREAMS phenolphtalein lol

You think this isn't already super vibrant?! O_O;
maybe saturated would be a better word? The blue i remember matched the crayon better haha.

3:00 The artistic urge to blow on your phone screen.
the tape is genius for picking up crayon dust!!

I'm sure liquid markers are much easier to change than chunky wax. :P
i remember elmers had color changing paint brush tip markers. i loved them so much...

I don’t know how else to explain this other than the blue looks like how when you try to talk during dreams and nothing comes out feels
I actually really agree to what you said LOL,
I think the simple word for is faint, or vague... or..
*nonexistent* XD
5:10 does anyone else see the face in the bottom circle?? I see 2 little eyes looking to the side, a nose and a tiny little smirk. Haha
Okay but what if Kasey came out with her own crayons? I’d buy
Oh in a heart beat.
Oh yes, and they'd have weird names like 'poopy green' and so on 🤭
@@ohhaha7 someone already did that
I wish Crayola would bring back changeable color changing crayons, they look so cool.
I think it's probably a pH thing - did you ever do the cabbage dye experiment or use pH strips? The blue to magenta is exactly those colours, and I'd be willing to bet the colour changing crayons are probably a string acid or base (not sure which whoops)
I loved Changeables and Overwriters!
The easiest way to colour shift is PH. I wonder if vinegar on a paintbrush would work with these?
Interesting!
I’m surprised the blue actually worked (and worked well!) 😮 I thought this pack would be just like the glow in the dark ones all over again 😂
so rated G compared to the last video..yet, again, very entertaining commentary, sharing of a new tool and a cute final result!
Ive been missing your videos! Love this piece. I 'doo doo' enjoy this one, yes I do. 👏
There is defo something satisfying about smooshing down some crayon onto paper!
Lol, you know us purple people are always weirdly defensive of our favorite color! 💜
Kasey Golden tries the Crayola crayon maker when? (LOVE your crayon videos that remind me of my childhood!)
"They doo doo look like doodoo." Loved that.
Hurray!!! For mid week videos its was made better by purples absence.
Edit: one these days ill snag a precious crayon original
Purple always finds a way, sadly. 😞
Don’t let waffles catch y’all slippin

I guess orange is not the new black.

try Sakura Crayons, they are great or Japanese Pentel crayons are also great
I loved how you did the crayon color changing trial, was funny and cheering 🤗♥️👍🏾💯

What will happen if you ironing the layers of the overlapping colours, maybe you like to try? 😅
I love your art so much.
What happens if you scratch the chunky crayon off the paper so you have a much thinner layer of crayon and then apply the colour changer?
Use a box cutter to sharpen crayons! Be very gentle to the tip or it'll just break off
Omg please make your own crayons and then draw with them 😊🙏❤️
Awesome work, as always, Kasey!

Sooo if you melt them and add the clear changer to them will it change???? Oooh other thought can you lay down the clear one and color over it???
Kasey you should get one of those make your own crayon kits

Great crayon crumb life hack. 🖍
Glad you found it useful!
When ever I use crayons in my art. It brings me back childhood memories of my childhood even remembering chewing the crayons lol
Fun illustration, and interesting crayons. 😃👍

How many prismacolors should i buy. Is it actually usefull to have all of them?
The full 150 set
Very interesting video but would love to know where I can purchase these crayons

omg! I remember these from when I was a kid!! (I'm 32, for reference)
What a cool concept! Shame most of them were bad lol
The end piece is so adorable though! 10/10
Thank u for ur sacrifice once again, those crayons looked ROUGH to use 😭
I wonder what would happen if you colored over the color changer crayons with the colorful crayons?
Yaaas crayon time🎉
The entire video I kept trying to brush the crayon flakes off my screen 💀
So cute!
I'm curious if the crayons would work reversed... like color changer first, then color on top? Probably not lol but just a thought!
The fact that you didn't brush away the crayon dust right away has me stressed 😂
Edit: omg she just cleaned them off. Ah the satisfaction
i remember having a 8 pack in 2nd grade and this girl rolling up with a color changing color and i was like wth
3:30 alright I paused to make a comment before I watch if it worked or not. This color changing technology sounds so crazy I am prepared to be disappointed.

The changed colors fade over time, just so you know. I know cause I've used these before. xD
I’ve never been this early xo ❤
Oh boy, what discontinued Crayola gimmick will Kasey come across in the mail next?
Crayola is losing money! They need to invite Kasey to make a special box of crayons for adults!!!
No Cap
you should make your own crayons
So the color changing crayon is just... purple... got it..
HUHHHHHH😊
BISEXUAL CRAYONS??!
Am I the only one who read the title as “COLON changing…”? 😅
Probably. 😅
The product might have degraded over time. That is why the change is not so vibrant.
Yooo
I think I had textas like these when I was little. I think the colour's made from red cabbage or something and the white changes the ph.
