  • Live on Nashville TV. This is a rare clip of Lenny Breau, performing this Jazz standard live in a TV show. Long time ago since jazz music was played on TV.
Not the best video quality, but it is indeed a treasure for Lenny fans! I reduced the noise because the original audio was full of noise.
The bass player here is Jim Ferguson.

I'm the bassist on the video of My Funny Valentine with Lenny Breau. This was from a performance on "The Noon Show" on WSMV in Nashville sometime in late '83 or early '84, as I recall. Thanks, Jim Ferguson

Well Jim, you're on the top 10 list of my favorite base players. Lenny had an easy job having you around.

This is one of those clips where the historical importance is more important than the quality of the video. I loved watching this.

A wonderful performance of this tune, one that Lenny played so often but always with passion and imagination. Lenny played with so many bassists over the years but only a few had an affinity with him that allowed him the freedom to play the way he (and we) really loved. Ferguson is certainly one, as is evident here. He plays with the sensitivity and empathy to flow with, rather than attempt to dictate, the time and feel, which is intuitive but of course requires great facility and I think that, more than any others, these are the qualities that distinguish the bassists (and all musicians) that engaged and inspired Lenny the most. I know it’s what he always looked for and we talked about it often (he was a dear friend and mentor). I have many recordings of Lenny playing this song, some that I made here in Nashville, including an inspired performance with Don Thompson on bass. Don is another wonderful musician (bass, piano, vibraphone, etc) and a friend. Now it’s a real pleasure to discover this one as well, with such beautiful playing by Lenny and Jim Ferguson… thank you! sda

I’ve been listening to Lenny for a few years. His playing is unmatched.
Maybe classical players can play the melodic voice leading similar to Lenny. But their music is written out. Lenny has that unique style. He always sounds like two guitar players. Every note fits.
On Georgia that chord progression is absolutely perfect. Like all his stuff.
I have never heard anything like it from any guitar player.
I love all music but never have seen/heard anything like Lenny especially live.

Excellent performances from both musicians! Interesting key choice as My Funny Valentine lays out quite nicely in the key of C/ Am especially on the nylon string guitar. Very nice!

Having just listened to this (as well as most of Lenny's collaborations with superb jazz clarinetist, Brad Terry), I have to say Lenny's playing (and his sound) top anything I've ever heard on guitar. Exposure (and recognition) of Lenny's talent came far too late, and I have to agree with one of your listeners who stated this lack of recognition had been criminal. When it comes to talent of this magnitude, I always have to wonder whether lack of recognition is really just an oversight or, in reality, something quite a bit more sinister. Regardless, I thank God for Lenny Breau and Jim Ferguson and for "r" for posting this.

Its a shame his wife was a coke addict because in the end he probably paid for it.
