Affordable sampling in 1985: Korg SDD-2000
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
- The Korg SDD-2000 was a cool sampling digital delay from the mid-'80s, that allowed users to control samples via MIDI. Back in the days when samplers were very expensive, DDLs were a good way to get in the sampling game without breaking the bank.
Great overview and archival knowledge of this historic time frame. It’s so important to have this history preserved. Thank you
My first sampler was the..........Casio SK1......a toy keyboard. However a work colleague heard it and rushed to buy one. He soon played me a track he made with his girlfriend supplying the vocal samples. He was very impressed with it. My how times have changed :)
I have the SK10 still, its fun but its far too expensive for resell now
Excellent video Paulo! I've always liked that "sampler". I was close to getting one this week actually, but now you've saved me the "trouble" of making a video on it. I'll still get it though! :P Cheers
Espen, thank you! Hehe, we're definitely birds of the same feather, we like the old stuff from the '80s. But please, do the video anyway, the more synth videos, the merrier, on RUclips... ;-)
@@SynthManiaDotCom Absolutely! The more 80s synth gear on RUclips the better :D
@Espen Kraft I enjoy both your videos, so please keep it up. :) Thanks @SynthMania :)
I love every video you make! My favorite synth historian!
Thank you!
In 1985 my friend and I went in on a SSD-2000 ($585 if I remember correctly) and MAN! we thought we'd become Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel rolled into one! And triggered by my Sequential Circuits Six-Trak - six mono tracks of sequencing? how could it be?! And then into the trusty Tascam Porta-One. We'd hit the big time for sure! Oh, and the Commodore 64 with homemade MIDI interface (thanks Polyphony Magazine!) got into the act for a while too.
Used the SDD in my guitar rig for a few years. About ten years ago, dug it out of the closet and sold it for $125.
Nice memory, ETC! Yeah, these days one can get a thousand times more power than an SDD-2000 off a smartphone running a music app... crazy how technology has marched on.
I decided to keep my unit after watching this video. “I lost control of the machine.” 🤣Thank you for this!
I love it! One of my favorite videos by you! I remember dreaming of owning one of these ..it used to be advertised in Rap Pages magazine. I think Marley Marl used this device early in his productions.
12:41 that beatbox face! :-) Great video, you are a pleasure to watch.
Really good video, very entertaining! Lots of funny parts, it shows how fun sampling can really be
Had that Mirage. It was heavy, you could qualify for back disability with a photocopy of it customer purchase order. You could add wishbone suspension to it and go offroad baja racing. I would swear at it, and it swore back at me repeatedly. There was no winning arguments with that sampler, it would play its copycat game until I'd eventually just stop trying. Had the ESQ1 too. That had a warmth to its factory set. You could overload the processor though with enough keys pressed depending on the patch it was playing, other than that it was fun too. Rock on!
Hey! Glad to see the Korg early samplers getting some love! I have a Korg DSS-1 that I absolutely love, it has sample playback that has a really great 80’s tone to it, not a lot of people mention it and I think it’s seriously underrated, it’s a very capable synthesizer and sampler all in one, you can even draw your own waveforms on it like the fairlight! :)
Cool and funny video, Paolo. Thanks. Please make a video about power for your studio. How to save your precious gear from electrical problems.
Another great demo! This one was informative and very entertaining. Thank you for documenting these important techniques that shaped a generation of music. Honestly, your videos should be submitted to the Library of Congress for historic preservation.
Wasn’t expecting those fire beatboxes 🔥 I didn’t know about this little sampler. Nice post.
I so look forward to jamming with you again Paolo! You're just a musical person! Great video!
Same here, Moot!!! Looking forward to jamming with you again soon!! Thanks!!!
The sound quality is surprisingly good! 😍
Happy Holidays to you and your family ❤️👍
Hey man, I absolutely love it when you give us these videos and show us a snapshot of life and music in the 1980s. As well as all your other gear. Your Roland Jupiter 80 is sweet by the way. Wish I had one.
Thanks!
Thanks for this great demo video. You're always on top!
Been watching you for several years now.. Thank you so much for the amazing videos and content! We try to incorporate 80s synths in our music as much as we can! - Bahrum
Bahrum, thank you
I had to watched this again brings back a lot of memories and how the effects revolution from the very late 70's to early 80's transformation into digital played a huge role in shaping the 80's sound Thanks Paolo
Glad you enjoyed it
Love hearing those examples of techniques, playing the phrase or sampled word along with live vocals is awesome.
So great! Forever fan of your channel!
Thanks!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thanks for the upload.
Thank you!
Really intresting video, great to see how it was done in the 80s :-)
Had some Stacy Q going there! Fine Job on the demo. I had a friend who owned one back when it just came out. What fun we had with it! I need to find some of the recordings we did with it! ;-)
Paolo you have crossed the 90,000 subscriber mark.. Tipperary is getting closer and closer✌🖖👌👍😁
Hehe - thanks!!
Your videos always interesting 👌
Back at it! Awesome. Very funny at the end too lol
Thanks!
I remember I pre-purchased the SDD 3000 in 1982 and waited patiently for it to arrive it blew me away I used it for my guitar Great video thanks Paulo
Thanks for sharing!
Loved that Fairlight series II monitor in the background!! ;-)) hahaha...too cool. BTW, good clinic about the Korg machine, Paolo.
Grazie! Auguri.
Thanks! You might have missed the Synclavier on the other side - haha :)
@@SynthManiaDotCom Dear Paolo, I didn't miss it!! hahaha...but I'm sooooo fan of the Fairlight series!! :-))) A good friend just bought a series III, recently. Can't wait to play it some day.
The Synclavier is another piece of modern music history, amazing. :-))
I can't stop loving this channel! Haha
Haha :-D thanks!
Thank you very much, my friend... very interesting. Thanks for the tip with the Roland sound module. But first I bought a Yamaha rx 15. One after the other.
love greetings
Paolo, watching you perform Safety Dance made my day.
I'm glad :-D
Nice topic. Reminds me. In those days I had a Yamaha SPX90 FX rackmodule with incorporated sampling (half a second). By midi you could sort of control the sample. You could transpose it 1 octave up/down with was basically done by pitchshifting the sample. Had lots of fun with it in those days using multitrack.
Fantastic review of this functionality!
Thanks!
Excellent vídeo !
I love my SDD-1200 - they're not so well known, but it's basically two SDD-1000 units squeezed into one, with dual concentric pots to control the channels individually. Much fun!
JEXUS IS BACK!! I gave you a reference as he was looking for the best synth sites.
Jexus is back? I remember him from many years ago when he was posting the vids with the fuzzy movie scenes in them
@@SynthManiaDotCom he's definitely back. Thanks for another excellent video!
Thanks to Noir Et Blanc Vie’s channel putting together a mini documentary on Jexus and the contact he was able to make with him for his research it turned out that from the response to the mini doc that the man behind Jexus is going to start his channel back up and he released a mash up vid of some old footage as well as the sysex files for the synth patches he used from his older video’s and stated on his website that he would be working on some more video’s soon. So, he was asking for some help and thought you and other’s in the synth community would be interested to know.
Wow thank you. I could never figure out what the sample or sequence buttons did! :)
You need to whip out that Fairlight more!!!!!!!
He also has a Synclavier, but it needs repair.
Actually the Synclavier works, but the Fairlight needs repair
So, did you manage to get the card you needed to make it work?
@@crimsun7186 I did
First for me on your channel and it was great !........Tx..........Subscribed !
Awesome, thank you!
My pleasure !........while I'm here ,.....what should I press to get that repeating lower pitch that you got at about 2.19 ?
Oh and by the way ,..you've almost made me trow up my coffee when you did that face pushing the sampling button ,...haha!....that was hilarious.!
Lots of great comedy in this video! And beatboxing...! What’s not to love?!
I have had a Korg SDD3000 for years. My first device I could sample on was a Boss DE200 delay, later joined by a Yamaha SPX90. My first proper one was my Powertran MCS1. Mine was possibly one of the first & it was built for me by a friend, Robin Wood of EMS. Of course it was still mono & unfortunately to store samples you needed a BBC computer, which I didn't have & wouldn't want! Later I was torn between a Mirage & Akai S700. I got the latter, though now its got problems. More recently I got a Mirage rack & own many other samplers.
I just spotted that Marshall time modulator. I notice you may have done a video on that, so I'll look at that in a moment. Nice. The rarest effect I own is a Klark Teknik DN36 (Stereo version of DN34). I've only ever seen a couple of DN34's, but I think the 36 is even rarer. Other rare items include Sony M7 & F7.
Another awesome Demo - thanks Paolo! #Patsy4Ever!
Thanks!
Very interesting & fun chapter!!!! Regards and Thanks
Thanks!
I have SDD-1200 - it's really great for dub-like sounds from another gear. But sampling kinda cool too! Sounds like 80's for real!
My first Sampler in 1991 was a Emax II plus :)
My first sampler was the casio sk-60 when in 1998
Dave Jordan Cool !
@@fjfrancois yes I loved it, sampling to keys is extremely fun!
Another great Video! You always feature great gear as well as delivering great informations! From what I've heard, I assume it is only monophonic? I'm still looking for some affordable vintage polyphonic sampler to do mellotron/orchestron-like choirs
Thanks! Yes, the SDD-2000 sampling is monophonic. If you're looking for a dedicated Mellotron box at an affordable price, have you already seen the Mellotron Micro? That would probably be unbeatable for that purpose
That midi sample control function just BEGS for a rendition of Nu Shooz “I Can’t Wait” or Mel and Kim’s “Respectable” (although I think Stock Aitken and Waterman used a similar machine made by Publison) 😄
The video for Respectable was mind-scrambling.
this oldschool stuff is amazing
You had me at "safety". Too good, thanks!
Thank you!
Gee thanks Paolo. Now I want a sampler.
If you have a computer, tablet, or smartphone... you have a sampler :-) It's so amazingly easy, today...
In 1986 I bought a sampling keyboard, I still have: Korg SK-1. 1 sec of sampling time 😁 . But only 86.- deutschmarks that time !
Good overview .. seems like yesterday
Waaaah, now I can't get the "Safety Dance" out of my ear any more. Thanks man! :o)
But honestly, there is one thing you really need to improve on when covering this song - the deadly serious facial expression of the singer in the official video. (I just can't stop laughing after I had the idea of him playing the deadly serious singer and his daughter the "crazy dancing girl" in a re-make of the video. We just need the vertically challanged guy and the landscape that looks like the desktop wallpaper of WinXP.) :-D
The serious facial expression did quite well for him - the song was a number one
@@SynthManiaDotCom Oh yes, and I still love it! (Even though the video is.. weird.)
It is safe to assume that he was serious about safety. :o)
Lot of Italo disco sounds if I'm not wrong. Awesome: Korg SDD-2000 + creativity!.
Thanks for leaving the funny ending in the video - machines will rule the world (and us)!
Haha, yep ;)
Very interesting!
:^)
My Akai s950 was my workhorse,in fact I took redundancy pay from my first job to buy it .....lol
Top video!!!
Glad you liked it, Don!
Always wanted to know how the likes of Marley Marl sampled in 1985 - thanks!
My fav digital delay
You have voice like a nightingale :)
Hehe - thanks :)
Stacey Q used it on We Connect, 2 of Hearts, etc.
The Microbrute sounds great. Still can't get those snappy/punchy synthbasses from something that's not analogue. I've never been 100% satisfied with any of the VSTs I've tried over the years.
This is awesome! I wish i could do something like that in fl studio. I managed to make some kind of bass line with poizone synth.
You can absolutely do all of this in the FL Studio sampler
@@SynthManiaDotCom great. i just love 80s music. It was way before my time sadly.
An example of sampling is by Herbie Hancock on the track Rockit, The ultimate sampler system was the CMI FARELIGHT V which used a Motorola MC6809 CPU but I suspect they did try using a MC68040 CPU, Listen to some sampled music try the ambum Lion Hart by Kate Bush.
Hello Mr SynthMania. Good job for (Paolo Di Nicolantonio - Close To Me)
Thank you!
Beautiful video.sorry for an information. how can i connect sdd 2000 to the keyboard. the microphone where i connect it. thank you very much and wait for your reply so I can use sdd 2000
I feel you man - Patsy was a doll... :)
Nice demonstration. Not my favorite thing but pretty cool
I had and in fact still have a cheetah SX16. Not very versatile but I squeezed everything I could into it back in the day.
You are god!!! Amazing!!!
Nice.
Deeeeeeep Daaaaaaance! 😎
Nowadays I have the Microsampler from Korg, cheap and effective. The sdd 2000 has the most beautiful delay sounds cause that vintage style. Dont know why the 3000 hasnt got midi. The Edge created and experimented in his house with 2 units of the sdd 2000 to creat The Unforgettable fire.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik's "Flaunt It" was heavily loaded with this kind of delay looping/re-triggering effects.
I wonder if this was part of Gibby Haynes gibbytronics live rack he always had on that chair on stage.
Fantastic ...!! saludos from Chile..!
Gracias, Danny!
Your knowledge consistently leaves me in wonder. Is this built up over years of experience or do you need to research before each recording you do. I really enjoyed this video.
Thank you, I wish I had time to do any research :^) this is just my passion, I have a real job and do this a couple of hours in the evenings. I'll be fifty this year, I just know all this stuff because I grew up with these types of music, I've been recording since the early '80s and been interested in music, synths, and music making for a very long time, since I was a kid...
@@SynthManiaDotCom
I remember we spoke before about your day job. I'm in the same game and can relate to requirements of a techie. I'm sat up now working out of hours. I can barely get time to watch your videos let alone how you have time to make them. You do a commerable job and your passion shines through. Until the next time. All the best.
John, thanks!
I was thinking you might play Boing Boom Tschak by Kraftwerk. It seems like it would be a fun song to recreate. They did use an Emulator II though. :)
nice video..What other samplers have this type of live feature?????I have 5 samplers and I dont think any of them do this...
Looking to filll some rack space with old delays/reverb I know I can always count on you to help me get my wallet out!! :D
was voodo ray made wth this technique somehow? there's a part where the voices (the "heyah") do a melody
Yeah, Voodoo Ray has AKAI sampler, an S900 IIRC, there have been several interviews of Gerald Simpson in which he discusses the gear, look them up
Synthmania omg
The bass on the microbrute when you played i cant stop loving you. 10:00 can i make that on my oberheim ob 8? Please explain how to make octave bass on oberheim ob 8 or xa. I find it quiet difficult. Please
Cheers
IIRC that's a PWM oscillator with a bit of sub-octave, then it's just setting the filter envelope to fast decay, while leaving a bit of filter still open on the sustain part - keep in mind the filter on the OB-8 is different, but you should get in the ballpark
@@SynthManiaDotCom damn. You are amazing!!!!
I just picked up one of these off the back of this video. Love the old school sound. Does anyone know if you can restore or reprogram the factory settings. Any help much appreciated :)
IIRC they are at the end of the manual, but I might be wrong
@@SynthManiaDotCom thank you. I have the manual and there are settings for a group I.e. 11 to 20 but not individual ones say for 13. I don't think it will be a problem as you can change settings to achieve the sound u want right?
@@fantasyproduct1042 Ah, yes, there are only three or four parameters to change, so yes, very easy to change the individual ones :-)
Drop the base !! Excellent, Paolo, thanks a lot !
Thanks!
My first sampler was an amiga 500
How was Techmaster P.E.B. Bass Computer album made?
Steve Porter damn, great reference and good question. But I think we both know that it came from outer bass :)
Hilarious comedy moments at the end! :D
Lost control of the beast! :-D
Heya Paolo! Miss your demos! Miss your face! Perhaps you have completed your transition into analog/AI hybrid? Where you can beatbox into eternity!!
Hope you are well
muito bacana mesmo vlu
I kinda hated samplers just because of how annoyingly many people used them. But I currently have a DSS-1, an S-2000 (in unknown working order) and a K2000R V3 w/ sample feature (not yet used).
Cool. !!!
:^)
aye, that was almost dougie fresh (beatboxing) 😂💃💃😜
Can you affect the sample ?
haha, that was dope!
This guy.
