Thanks Paulo, invaluable info and great audio examples. It's weird how such a promising instrument would merely have a VSE score of 3 stars. Along with my 330 this will complete all my vocoding needs for sure.
I remember selling these in my days working as a High tech sales rep for Rose Morris (Korg uk importer) I seem to remember them being quite expensive and we had a lot of dead stock going for a song.. I wish i'd bought one now... Crazy.. Great Demo Mr P ! ......... best Simon.
In Germany we have smurf flavoured ice cream (ok, actually it's called "Schlumpf" here, which is the German word for "Smurf"): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_moon_(ice_cream)
hi synthmania and the guys , good demo, i remember this machine when i lade jingle for a fm radio in france, do you know a vst plugins that can do the same effect of pitch voice, i use logic prox and ableton live 9, thanks.
If you send the female voice wave no. 7 through a Strymon reverb you might "hear the angels sing"... :-) I am really wondering how the DVP-1 compares to the Roland VP-70.
SynthMania I know you where kidding😬 good to here bro stick with it 👍I feel great living without sugar in my diet and can honestly say I'm not missing my sweet treats including the Belgian chocolate flapjacks from M&S 😂😂😂 Ps do you have much joint pain when you get up after sitting a while ? Regards Steve
a man from the golden era - thank you - please if you want to teach us how to create live performance ( synthwave style ) we will be glade to you - thanks
I definitely like the VP-330 more than the DVP-1, then again it's the usual analog vs digital debate - Favorite vocoders are the classic ones that are very hard to find.... the '70s Sennheiser, Bode, etc
Hello, what are the internal waveforms for? just sounds to play on the keyboard or can you vocode them? can you use an extrenal synth with this vocoder or does it only vocode two internal waveforms? Thanx
Am I right to suggest you could combine the DW8000 & the DVP 1 ? I seem to remember some trade adds or reviews at the time suggesting some integration ?
I am finding with mine that intelligibility can be an issue! Does anyone have a fix for that? I have been playing around with EQ and it almost seems I have to go to extreme levels of high mid and highs and roll the lows off like mad to get it to sound somewhat clear!
Hey! Great video! I bought one of that and when I get only the direct sinal, the pure voice sounds a little distorted, even when the metter shows green. Is it normal?
The Australian band "The Reels" used the DVP-1 extensively at one point in their existance You can hear it used in this version of Bad Moon Rising - ruclips.net/video/kU7A7nFjLh0/видео.html
Hi, Todd, I don't have an A-Station at the moment, but plan to get one in the near future and I will do a video about it - in the meantime, you may like to check out my html page for the K-Station (same sound) here: www.synthmania.com/k-station.htm
I have a video with DW-8000 (synth), DVP-1 (processor) and DDD-1 (drum machine) - which are all from the same era - scheduled for a long time. Eventually it will come
in the 80's, korg wrote down every parameters on every devices ! Now they let us download shitty pdf which doesn't explain anything ; I don't get it XD but I still love my modified EX800 or my volca keys anyway
No way. It could be different model but a digital vocoder 100% cause quantization noise can be clearly heard in there. Analog tape is not capable to produce such sorts of noises.
I listened to the track and my opinion is still that they used tape speed for this effect. Woodpeckers is from 1984, dvp-1 from 86. The artifacts you mention can be from sampling, old fx units, or other things. Dosent mean they did not use tape. As I can not be 100 % sure it is tape, I will include an Eventide harmonizer as a possibility.
If you believe that tape is the most straight forward solution for pitch shift FX you're definitely wrong since both slowing down and speeding up the tape would severely affect tempo in either way respectively as well making the recorded voice track out of sync to the rest of material. There had been plenty of other than DVP-1 vocoders built by 1984.
Hi Paolo, thanx for this great video. I bough an DVP-1 recently. I have some questions. Could you please help me? I send my questions via Instagram message. Thanx in Advance, Pat
Super informative video. I've heard a lot of these tricks on my favourite songs. Your dangerous alien voice was funny!
:)
Thanks Paulo,

Simon, thank you!
Magnifico! I've had one of these in the bottom of my studio rack for 20 years, never really understood how it worked :/
I wanted one of these ever since they came out. Finally got one a couple years ago for 75 bucks! It really sounds great for an 80s DSP box.
It really does. Kinda surprising how smooth the vocoder is. Flagship hardware from back then pulled no punches.
$75?? man, every one of these i see is over the $500 mark.
@@SomeOne-pd6vm i got lucky. It seemed there were always 1 or 2 on eBay, and they just didn’t always attract bids. I doubt that’s the case nowadays.
mister sandman sounded lilke you melted smurfs! :D
Epic image !!! :-)
Smurf squash. Comin up in stores near you. Drink responsibly.
In Germany we have smurf flavoured ice cream (ok, actually it's called "Schlumpf" here, which is the German word for "Smurf"): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_moon_(ice_cream)
We have it in Italy too, it's called "Puffo" and tastes nauseatingly sugary :-D
Yeah, it's terrible stuff! But (some) kids love it because of the crazy colour and intense bubblegum flavour. D:
Thank You very much for this video. It helped me make a decision, I'll definitely buy DVP-1!
Amazing item for that period !!!...
Korg had some great gear innovations in the early 80's
I always liked the freeze function on this machine. I’ve mostly used it for the internal wave forms. Come samplers and it fell into disuse.
Amazing informative and to the point. Another winner video Paolo.
Thank you!
was waiting for that "mm what you say" vocoder sound lol
I just scored me one of these. Thanks for the video Paolo!
Enjoy!
love the mister sandman
Will be stuck in my head ALL DAY, now! :P
It also had an eerie twist to it. Perfect for a slasher movie ;)
Very good démo, very interesting !
From 3:10 things got serious. Obrigado for that Paolo!
Perfect demonstration! Great box. THanks. ;-)
Thanks!
D O W N. Thanks for doing a demo, was curious about this after your Daft Punk video...What's your favorite vocoder?
Great, as always! Thanks Paolo. :) Cheers! K
Sweet! I love Vocoders. :)

the downtuned setting sounds like that old song "Oh Yeah" by Yello :>
This is a interesting device!

very good video,thank you
Thank you Palo great bit of education on a awesome bit of kit ; )
Thank you, Stove!
SynthMania Hi PaOlo are you mocking me because I missed a lot of schooling 😂 how are you doing bro with the diet ? That's me lost 17lbs 😱😬👍
:-D I was just kidding ;) Lost 9 now

No, luckily don't have joint pain
Now I resemble that there was some very similar module included in the korg wavestation a/d. It seems to me was called microvocoder.
a man from the golden era - thank you - please if you want to teach us how to create live performance ( synthwave style ) we will be glade to you - thanks
so damn cool!!!! What is your personal favorite between the Korg DVP-1 and the ROLAND VP330? and your favorite of any vocoder ever? wondering :)))
I definitely like the VP-330 more than the DVP-1, then again it's the usual analog vs digital debate - Favorite vocoders are the classic ones that are very hard to find.... the '70s Sennheiser, Bode, etc
@@SynthManiaDotCom the fact that anybody could make a digital vocoder in 1985 that worked that well was a miracle

10:00 sounds like the Korg MIku guitar pedal

Awesome video! I love vocoders.
Would you be willing to do the vocoder section to Bizarre Love Triangle? :)

Hey Paolo, can you make a Dubstep tutorial video with one of your synths?
Hey! Great video! I bought one of that and when I get only the direct sinal, the pure voice sounds a little distorted, even when the metter shows green. Is it normal?
How are you hitting the DVP? Straight from a microphone? If yes, try to go through a preamp + compressor before hitting the DVP-1
@@SynthManiaDotCom thanks!! I will try that!!
I wonder if Venom used something similar to this to do the "devil" voice that Cronos use.
Did you had a korg kasolator pro? if you had or know, if i can use that preset on that i wanna play them on a midiclaviatur is thast posible?

Ciao, bernyboss, it's here ruclips.net/video/5TPp5jbpGZE/видео.html
Can this replicate any sounds from the EMS vocoder?
I'm afraid it can't :)
"I will exterminate" XD
I presume latency is less than most vst?
persuadersonic it is not perceptible.
Hi Synthmania! Has it a line input for synths?
Hi, yes, it has both mic and line inputs

I guess this box was used for "he-he-he" voice of "Woodpeckers from space" by Video Kids.
I think Video Kids slowed down an analog tape, recorded and then put the tape back to normal speed.
No way. It could be different model but a digital vocoder 100% cause quantization noise can be clearly heard in there. Analog tape is not capable to produce such sorts of noises.
