Been flying her in 2016 & 2017, with the old landing gear and before the whole paintjob. She had a white top before. Best ship in the fleet, I think, never let me down. Sometimes she needs a bit convincing on the startup, but if you treat her nice, she treats you nice as well. :) Glad to see her in good hands.
Hey Chris, Chris here.. Just found this video , thanks for it ! Worked on H-19's and H-34's for Harry Doan (Doan Helicopter) , on Big Tree rd, Daytona Bch, Fla. . Early/mid 80's. Harry loved these Helicopters -- soon Me Too ! I was working on my A&P at the time and learned from some of the great Sikorsky mechs from Sanford Fla. I was on Helitack crew of S55-T at Peppermint USFS base Calif in 82. Still love these Beasts of ' Fire breathing, piston smack'n, oil slinging, valve clack'n, Blade spinn'n fly'n machines ! Thanks for the respect of these Bad Boy'z !!
I was crew chief on UH34j model in the late 60s in the navy . It was in NAS Rossi roads , Puerto rico . As crew chief (ADR3) I was able to start that thing , awesome for a 19 yr old ! When we took delivery of this helo it had just come out of a total rebuild , new & fresh , everything. Just after I was transferred out of of NAS Rossi Roads it was replaced by jet H3 I believe . 143898 was the tail number . There was a web site to look up old AC . My new /old helo was parted out !
I also have had and still have, at 72 next month, a great love story with the Sikorsky S 58 since being a young boy. The Belgian Navy operated several of them especially for S.A.R in the Channel and, during summer, to fly over the sea, close to the beaches, and at low altitude to check the attendance at the different beaches across the coast, that everything was ok, and also of course in case of emergency. SABENA Belgian World Airlines operated it for short haul passenger travel between close European capitals around Brussels. And of course it was heavily used in the Vietnam war, as well as during the Mercury space program. A most beautiful, highly sensual and powerful machine you in addition painted in such a nice blue. I wish you both many nice flights together. I finished both my PIC and aerospace editor some time ago, but am still as passionate and interested in everything that flies.
Around 1977 I had the honor of flying in a Sikorsky S58 the hard way as the LA Sheriff department had to rescue me from a self inflicted motorcycle accident on Angeles Cress HWY high up in the mountain roads.
We need 2 see more of you and Big Blue. Awesome vehicle. My 1st flight in a helo was as 9 year old in 1988 in a ex South African Airforce version at an Expo. Find memories
I love the fact that you have almost an unobstructed 180 degree view. And a very commanding one at that. Not a bad looking ole gal for something that’s the size of a small house. I think if Han Solo wanted a Helicopter with his precious Falcon this would be it.
Thanks for the video as it is very interesting and it is great you are talented enough to keep her flying. I started with flying Hueys in Vietnam in 1969 and hung around for thirty years and it was interesting. Had hoped you would fire that baby up as there is nothing like the sound of those huge recips. Best of luck!
Love that Helicopter. When my dad was in the AF (a pilot) he got a ride in one and pointed out to the pilot that the trucks on the highway were passing them. 😄
I had the honor 25+ years ago to paint the S-39 float plane for a museum in the northeast. Very historic plane that was tied to the cival air patrol that did a rescue mission during WW2.
To the best of my knowledge there is only one or two helicopters that are left seat command pilot configured, they are European Mfg. All American Designed and Manufactured are left seat command pilot configured.
That fitting for a gun is a seat back fitting , extra windows are a civil type with the rear door piano hinge also civil. Military had a net blocking tail entry, no salvo handle in front of left knee. Probably an S 58 J
I’m pretty sure parts can be made today for that aircraft as long as you have the blueprints or technical drawings of the part they can be machined by Either CNC or by a lathe
Wow a piston S58, amazing you guys are keeping these old aircraft going, good to see. Can’t be easy what with the shortage of spare parts and cost of avgas these days. What’s your fuel burn?
Was a mech first mech and crew chief on the UH-34D, last assigned buno 148058, 1963/19641965/1965, The world famous Purple Foxes HMM-346 two Viet Nam tours. There is a saying that when your out of 34's your out of helicopters. I was a mech and crew chief on the Ch-46D 1966-1973, one Viet Nam tour, they worked but not the ease of maintenance or class of the 34.
There is another name for the helicopter the Westland Wessex because it was licensed produced in the United Kingdom by Westland Aeroplane company to make Sikorsky helicopters for the Royal Air Force and Royal Army. Looking at the trends of early helicopters United States licenses them to United Kingdom which can also apply on the s58 either an American version or the British version made by Westland. Same thing for SH-3 marine one either US or UK built
Westland Wessex was licence built, but with gas turbine engines - either 1 x Napier Gazelle or 2 x RR Gnome. No such thing as a 'Royal Army' in the UK, perhaps you meant that they were built for the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy?
Btw the people at Winnebago made a flying camper version of this type of helo years and years ago. Great idea .. but unfortunately there aren't that many roter wing pilots that like to camp .
Could you describe the clutch between the engine and the transmission and rotator system? I understand that the piston powered smaller helicopters use V-belts as the initial drive and the clutch functionality where an idler tightens the belt tension to engage the clutch. But this helicopter has 6 times the horsepower of the smaller helicopters.
Morning, why are you wearing your hat back to front. Why wear one at all. Just because someone who is a photographer put his hat on backward, Years ago, I have to laugh when people started to copy the him. The same goes for the unshaven look, some actors did it, and like sheep they followed and did the same thing.
Flew 150 missions in one of these things in Vietnam, 1966/7 HMM 362-363 USMC, mainly as a gunner.....5 Air medals.
best wishes, friend!
@richarddegen6184, My dad owned some of these H-34 helicopters for helicopter logging.
Been flying her in 2016 & 2017, with the old landing gear and before the whole paintjob. She had a white top before. Best ship in the fleet, I think, never let me down. So good to hear!! Yes, the start ups were always a bit of a crapshoot😂
Engauge starter 15 -20 seconds. Mag on, Hit the primer for the count of 5 then hit the primer count of 5, full rich when it fires.
Use to fly them during 1980-1981. The noise, the shakes. Once you experienced it you'll love them forever.
She is a beautiful craft!
Very nice helicopter. An classic piece of aviation history too! Worked on one for A&P training. Good Luck and Enjoy!
Thank you!!

Really good to hear this!!
She's gorgeous ! Happy flying !
I love how it's easy to tell that you love the aircraft and respect it
Thanks!!!
A beautiful machine, thanks for sharing! I love how they look like big dragonflys.
Around 1977 I had the honor of flying in a Sikorsky S58 the hard way as the LA Sheriff department had to rescue me from a self inflicted motorcycle accident on Angeles Cress HWY high up in the mountain roads.
I ride that route a lot and I see a lot of wrecks up there. I ride Harley so slow is still fun😂

TV show Riptide had one. I was hooked ! They fight Forrest fires here in eastern NC with them.

thank you for video,i love Sikorsky S58 Heli.
That thing on the back of your cap works really well to keep the sun out of your eyes.
Very cool. Thanks
Had a blast flying her!!!
There must be better jobs but right now, I can't think of one. Great stuff.
Love that Helicopter. When my dad was in the AF (a pilot) he got a ride in one and pointed out to the pilot that the trucks on the highway were passing them. 😄
I do about 100 KTs in it!!
@@ChrisTheFacheBrunothey had a strong head wind that day and my dad flew jets so it was an opportunity to needle the helo pilots. 😊
Beautiful helicopter. Enjoyed the tour but disappointed that you didn't fire it up and go for a short trip.
I'll post one!
Looking good brother. Nice video. You gave that aircraft some love and it shows.
Nice work Bruno, I'm glad you had a good experience.
Thanks Danny!!!

Cool video great helo thank you ❤
Interesting that the "Pilot" sat in the Right seat , not in the Left like Most other Helos and Aircraft ... Great Machine ! "Keep em Flying"
To the best of my knowledge there is only one or two helicopters that are left seat command pilot configured, they are European Mfg. All American Designed and Manufactured are left seat command pilot configured.

This model helocopter was made famous on the TV show "Riptide".
I was hoping to see the engine.
Awesome machine
Rock on man!
Gorgeous bird. Exactly the kind of airframe I’d like to convert whenever hydrogen turbines are a thing.
so cool
I’m pretty sure parts can be made today for that aircraft as long as you have the blueprints or technical drawings of the part they can be machined by Either CNC or by a lathe
Yeah but aftermarket never has the same reliability as Sikorsky
I wonder if at some time in the distant future you will look back and feel that this time in your life was one of the best. I know I do.
It was a good time for sure!!
Thanks
Cool
Wow a piston S58, amazing you guys are keeping these old aircraft going, good to see. Can’t be easy what with the shortage of spare parts and cost of avgas these days. What’s your fuel burn?
Cool AS F--K bro! kinda reminds me of rip tide😊
That’s so awesome!
Even removed the tail rotor drive shaft cover in the cabin. Every ounce counts, lol.
dude looks like a musician

Why are helicopters right seat PIC...Neat video...

We were actually flying that one up there!! We called her Piggy

I understand that the piston powered smaller helicopters use V-belts as the initial drive and the clutch functionality where an idler tightens the belt tension to engage the clutch. But this helicopter has 6 times the horsepower of the smaller helicopters.
That why is the S58? Because of the year of production?
How much and how long does it take to get a helicopter pilots license?
At 2:50 in the video, there is another one in the background that looks like the helicopter that Winnebago made into an RV.
That was it!!
My brother flew one in the Royal Dutch Navy during the Sixties from our aircraft carrier.
He thought it was a great plane to fly.
It's really fun to fly!!!
F-FZM northern sask S58 not turbo I called it PLAYBOY because the story goes it was HefnerS first helicopter
Does is still have the magnesium skin?
It does!!
Walt!
Air America!!! 😎
How many hours do you get from one summer tour with that beast?
We got about 30 this year but years in the past sometimes it’s slow
No T models in the fleet?
Nope. Only pistons here
The constant drip of oil from these engines serves as corrosion inhibiting compound.
What are those metal straps at the tail section?
hinges for folding the tail when use on aircraft carriers
Was this thing used in the Korean War?
nope, that was H19, these came
out in 1957
Jack slate voice 😂

Weird😂
Please be careful that machine looks really crappie
