I was born in 1990 in Canada and assumed the best life for me would be staying in school, going to university, travelling abroad plenty, moving to a city for a cheap apartment and to start my career, and then get married and have kids once I could afford to buy a house. I was always focused on advancing my career and finding the "perfect" husband first (because who you have kids with is such a major anxiety indicing decision). My parents always told me to do all these things while I still had time, so I wouldn't miss out once I was saddled with kids. Well I'm 34 now and after all that, I'm single and unemployment right now living with my grandma and still waiting for the perfect situation to have kids in. I'm not sure if I will now, I'd have to get back to work and find the perfect mate first 😅

Way back in the 60's I worked for a couple of years in rural Africa... essentially with hunter/gatherer level culture. Thinking back, the message i missed then was how mentally well balanced they were. Utterly poor, but completely rich in social harmony. Mental health was a non issue, they had communal security.
This is what we have completely lost in rich western urban culture. It certainly doesn't occur naturally growing up and living in concrete city silo's. Small town and rural there is still some level of community.

That's because inequality is the source of why the kids are depressed. It is very much so now because they are on their phones all day looking at rich people who get paid to brag about how rich they are. If you are a hunter gatherer you are pretty much the same as everyone else unless you found a cool rock or something then I guess your hunting buddies can be a little jealous over that but it is nowhere never the exponential levels we have.

Western urban culture is lost because housing is in crisis, it's unaffordable relative to income. Once upon a time a man with a full time job with less than a college level could afford a decent home and an automobile. It may not have been spectacular but it was better than anything the socialist nations could offer and (by today's standards) almost princely. Today rent is unaffordable and that's where the system came crashing down: the most basic and immediate human need is shelter, take that away and you have control: that's what governments have done: oh and by the way look at the taxes after all that where they end up going, for socialised bailouts of large corporations and big (not small) banks.

The irony is how everyone comments on how the lower birth rate means fewer young workers to exploit in the social welfare state.
But child mortality (under 5) has fallen. In the US is it was 100 per 1000 births in 1930 and now it is in the single digit. In any case, children are now all expense, whereas in the past they at an early age became an asset to the farm. So people have fewer children but invest more in them with the "college for all", etc. And now, in the West, to have children is to lose most rights under the state intervention of "for the good the children". Live a childless life or live under the boot of the social worker or family court judge.
"As Malthus argued, the only force strong enough to stand against the biological desire to mate and have children, was the even stronger social desire to live comfortably and avoid poverty." --Invention of the Modern World, Alan Macfarlane

It comes down to the definition of what poverty is in of itself and the miscalculation of what is truly valuable. If you know how to survive without society then you are rich. rich people are not rich if they don’t know to survive without society. A mansion without electricity, water, or heat/air conditioning is pretty useless to a modern person. The truth is we got spoiled and comfortable. And then we also get less skilled and capable and therefore more dependent on the government and society and then we want to mate with the perfect person because the amount of hard ship modern people will stomach is lower and lower. This population collapse is pretty inevitable but maybe it will lead to a complete reformation of what we consider truly valuable.

you need to factor in feminism which has alienated women from men with their attitude of woman can be ( eg career only), that men are predators, unrealistic standards and expectation of what men have to be for women eg the sixes, nevermind that marriage/LTR is now risky thanks to the legal system when you can very easily lose your kids and have them alienated from the non custody parent...
add to all that the costs of shelter, raising children, depressed wages( thanks to excessive immigration) etc

This needs to be looked at in more detail as some populations seem immune to this process. Israel has an increasing population but some demographics within countries are experiencing rising birth rates. In Western nations it seems to be mostly those on welfare that are experiencing this.

Also, the only subgroups in the west with real high birthrates are Mormons, Amish and other super religious cohorts like them. Generally, everywhere but Africa has low rates, incl all of Asia. Even India is at replacement and will drop below any day now.

    • @PGHEngineer

In the UK there has been a decline in teen mothers and single mothers since they government changed welfare in 2012.
Surveys on religion show 95% of Mormons and Muslims have children, 80% of Catholics and Episcopolians and just 50% of atheists.
Feminists have for a long time suffered from low birth rates.
The implication of this is that people with left wing views of one kind or another are dying out. Thus shows up in the stats where just 40% of the Laboir Party vote is coming from native British people, and the Labour supporting tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror has seen a slow decline from 6million in the 60s to close to nothing today. It will be gone entirely by 2035. As will the Guardian newspaper and the BBC.
Everything is going to change in 2035.
Of course. Since religious belief and a Conservative world view is down to genetics, when those who are not religious and not conservative go extinct, there's no coming back. I just hope they aren't doing anything important - but probably not.

    • @sportysbusiness
      @sportysbusiness 12 дней назад +2

That's hard to quantify, as a small number of women tend to have a large number of abortions. Those same women would be far more careful if abortion wasn't an option and would almost certainly not have more than 1 child. Worse those children would not be born into good family structures, meaning they are less likely to become productive members of society. In addition, the fertility rate is plummeting, people are meeting their life partners later in life when they are naturally less fertile, people are choosing to have fewer children as it is so expensive and it is harder to meet your life partner (in some countries there are too many men, too many with autism etc) so more and more people are remaining single. This is multifaceted, and not good.

Since both religious belief and conservative worldviews are related to our genes, those that don't have these genes and fail to reproduce as a result will go completely extinct, removing their own genes from the gene pool.

Yes to what you said about conservatives but this lack of children is a wealthy country problem. China, South Korea and Japan are in a dire situation. South Korea is projected to go extinct in 100 years. So the phenomenon is a little bit more perplexing than conservative attitudes. To me wealth creates spoiled citizens and child rearing is difficult. The more comfortable you get the more you tend to avoid difficulty. You also have attitudes that keep postponing marriage and child rearing because everyone is looking for the perfect person because they have so many options now whereas most of human history was arranged marriages of two teenagers or you had kids with your first love who you met in the village your apart of. Now there is no village and everyone hustling to have careers and yet very few people are skilled enough to survive without society. The rural people have the advantage clearly. Cause they don’t need modern things and they have the skills to be the ones likely to survive a societal collapse. I’m probably a goner lol

Perry speculates that the falling birthrate is something to do with urbanisation. I agree but would take it a little further: in a rural setting, a family can do the work necessary to feed, house and sustain themselves while also looking after children. In an urban setting where you must go and work in a factory or an office, you can't. You have to either pay someone else to care for them, or sacrifice your income until they reach school-age. This is a huge and often prohibitive loss. After all, it's not like your mortgage payments stop for five years at the same time.

It is societies influence on modern women, telling them that motherhood is a bad option that created this problem and tough economic times that did the convincing. Look up the science of memetics. Then look up the genetic influences on voting preferences. Then the genetic influence in being religious or not.
Now, it turns out that 40% of people are conservative because they are genetically predisposed to be conservative. 40% of people are genetically pre-,disposed to be religious. It turns out that the religious conservatives are more likely to marry early, stay married and have children. This leads to a differential rate of reproduction between left wing post-modernists vs traditional religious Conservatives. Differential rates of reproduction due to underlying genetic differences leads to evolution.
If you want it in even simpler terms, one day the Amish will have taken over the world.

Secondly here in the US growing number of those individuals choosing not have children are largely those 55+. In fact I've come into contact with many of those individuals in that age group who say they quite happy with the decision not have children because of the trade-offs invovled.

The moralistic take is the wrong one here. People want kids but the expense has grown relative to other expenses and the social fabric that helped you (and your children) handle the burden of raising a child has collapsed. Read about cost disease and the urban crisis.
I'm not even sure what the point of preaching child rearing to 'hedonists' would be, if that's all they are.

Give incentives for couples to have more children and to bring them up themselves, instead of leaving them in childcare with strangers who don’t love them.

Even IT companies are asking their staff to head back to offices; it's more about control rather than efficiency. Capitalism is great but great wealth and power has been funneled upwards into the hands of a limited group of people such that the middle class feels squeezed. In my Asia side of the world, many get married in their 30s after school and getting a stable job for the sake of financial security. Biologically it's a decade too late and a good number of women have to use IVF in order to bear children. The social evolution is too fast for biology to catch up, we have lost that village support we used to have. Moreover now it takes 2 incomes to feel comfortable & kids are 20+ year projects. So no surprise that the middle class is not reproducing to replacement rate.

30 to 54 I was a fairly happy dad. Son committed suicide. 55 to 70 it’s been great, now part time in Philippines, subsistence culture, shared kids in 2 family household, some time in Hawaii. Life with childless partner is good. Let’s help people bring up the more than enough kids in the world right now. Think of Gaza for example. Suburban house car marriage and kids is simply a bad fit for this era of massive climate change and political right wing rubbish.

People stop having kids when they move away from rural areas because there isn't space to have them. Rural hovels might be small, but there is a lot of open space for kids to exist. Now, the entire stretch from New Hampshire to Virginia is a concrete scar visible from space. Other major metros are the same. Most of the remaining land in North America is uninhabitable because it is desert, mountain, tundra, or used in agriculture. Where are we supposed to have kids, when we can't even get an apartment without a dozen roommates? We're living in Soylent Green.
