The printing out your resumé and handing them to potential employers is seriously fantastic advice! I went to Australia on a WHV and the only way I found jobs was by walking the streets and handing my resumé to businesses in person!
The problem with both NZ and Australia is they accept thousands of working visa applications every year so not even the locals can find jobs as there hundreds of people looking for work. Glad you took the initiative and went door knocking for work.
hey!! thank you so much for posting this video, i'm seriously so grateful to have found it. i'm in the process of applying for my visa and planning to move over the fall and you're genuinely such a mirror, proof and inspiration that the life i'm manifesting is 100% inevitable. i hope you're doing amazing!!
I'm 29 now with 5 months till 30 and on and off panicking on whether I should decide to do this or be a normal adult and settle down and get a house or something 😂

Just got my working holiday visa too and I’ll be flying out in February. Absolutely clueless on where to start.. thanks for making this video from your perspective!
Great video. Very impressed you got a car so quickly. Good advice about walking into businesses and handing out your CV. Employers want to know what the person looks like (are they smiley etc) and it saves them having to call back a bunch of people if you just walk in.
I've been obsessive about moving to New Zealand for years. How close we are in age, and how you just did it has inspired me. It's almost 2 am and I have work in the morning, but I don't care because I'm starting to set up everything. I'm gonna do it! Sell all my shit, get a visa and do it!
Hey, did you have an IRD number before opening the bank account ? I can't seem to find out which order to do it. Would you recommend opening the bank account online before arriving ?
I’m 23 and coming from England in march for the first time working/travelling solo, absolutely clueless myself but Thankyou for this it has helped me a lot!

An old law. Not allowed to pay wages on a Monday or Friday. School economics teacher thought it was, so money could clear and be used in a shop that was open. A hangover from when shoos were closed on the weekends.
Hi Madilyn! Great video! I've also been having a hard time finding videos from US Citizens who have done a working holiday here and actually stayed the full year. I am currently set to start my visa in March, and I was wondering how you managed your cell phone situation? I know a lot of people will just go without data and rely on wifi, but I don't think thats the best option for me. I was wondering if you switched to a whole new provider when you were there, or if you were able to add intl. service with your existing carrier? I know this video is a bit old but I hope to hear from you! Cheers!
i had an international plan with unlimited texting and (slow) data but then used whatsapp to call so i wouldn't get charged! it was a bit annoying at times but it worked x
Hi Madilyn! I’m on WHV this coming dec and I am not planning to get a car. Was wondering how reliable the public transportation is and is it possible to live in NZ without a car?
hey mirah! it's definitely doable, you don't need a car. it's just easier if you do have one, but i know plenty of people who walk/take public transit/bike as well! good luck :-)
The Zed part is so funny, i just applied for WHV for new zealand for next year and i was pretty anxious about it but this is putting me at ease. Thanks for sharing your experience i legit couldn't find anything on this for an american -> new zealand lol
I’m working on getting a WHV however I want to stay in New Zealand for longer than a year. Do you have a plan after your visa expires? Do you plan on staying in New Zealand and if so how would you go about it?
I don't plan on staying longer than a year, however if you come over on a WHV and work for a company (even bars/hospitality/etc) a lot of places will sponsor you to stay and you can even work towards residency. I know a lot of people doing that! I'd say just come over and see how you like it, and go from there :-) best of luck!
Would you be able to drop me a link on how to apply for the working holiday visa please looking at getting this sorted looking for somewhere to go June july
Very helpful video thank you! One thing i wanted to ask - i just arrived in New zealand and went to bnz and said i would have to book an appointment for 2 weeks. Then went online and applied and says it will take 5-7 days. Anyway i can get it done in the next couple days? Thanks!
After application how long before you got approved for a visa? Then what date or month did you applied/visa approved and what month was your visa date granted? When I say granted I meant like the month you can go to the NZ. I hope you can reply (or anyone who can answer). Thank you Ps. Will they ask you when do you want to go to NZ? I dont know if they ask that so they can adjust the visa date... Thanks
How much do you pay for your accommodations/what’s a general peace range you were looking into. I know it depends of course, but if someone doesn’t care much about any luxury what price range have you seen?
i was looking for anything under $270 per week, but you could easily find somewhere for around $180 if you don't care about it being furnished/having an ensuite/etc
Hi madlyn, just wanted to ask, based on what i see in your youtube, what country whv have you been going recently? Because i planned to work with whv, thanks😁
Do you think this would be much harder for someone who's not got any qualifications from college or uni? and also doesn't have a licence or car yet? I've been working the same job since 16 installing windows and conservatories and I'm now 22 so I'm not sure how this would go for me but a part of me really would do this
Hey! In July it'll be winter, so it just depends on what you're after! If you don't mind the cold, start in Queenstown and you can get some skiing/snowboarding in. But, if you don't like snow I'd start up in Auckland where the temp is pretty mild during winter. Have fun!! xx
Do you need to be enrolled or have a degree of higher education for a work holiday visa in New Zealand? For Ireland I think you need to be a university student. I want to take a gap year and I’m 18 is this enough for me to be able to go?
Hey sorry for all the questions! How did you pay for the car? Did you pay using your New Zealand bank account and have to transfer money from your US account to BNZ?
no worries! so i didn't have any $$ in my nz bank account when i bought the car as i wasn't working at that point, so i ended up using paypal and paying through that (using my US bank account to transfer to a NZ bank account). hope that helps!
I can make a video on this!! During my first solo trip at 18 my anxiety was terrible, but doing it for 6 years you get used to the butterflies :-) You push through and know it's so so worth it for the experience xx good luck

this is really valuable advice Madilyn! i'm first-time solo traveler going on a working holiday and I'm sort of stressed by how many things I need to figure out before leaving. Finding a job and accommodation is the biggest for me! Did you hire an agency or did you do everything yourself? Like applying for a visa, and booking a flight?
happy to help Iva!! I've traveled by myself for the last five years, so i felt comfortable doing it myself but i have friends that have gone through an agency and that can alleviate a lot of stress (esp for your first time!). my biggest piece of advice is just take it one step at a time :-) good luck!
@@MadilynSchroeder thank you! I'm excited, but I'm scared I won't be able to find a job. the easiest jobs to get are in hospitality and retail, but I don't have any experience in that. are employers going to take me on or won't risk it?
employers wont even look at you if you don't have the right visa and even if you managed to get a job and you got caught they will cancel your visa and depot you if its a bad case you can be banned from entering NZ for 5 years worse case forever.
Hi, would you say that finding work in Auckland is relatively easy? Also, if I’m not being indiscreet, is it possible to find a job for more than the minimum wage of 21$?
you should be able to find a job within a couple weeks of arriving pretty easily! most service based jobs are going to be around minimum wage, usually $22 but have potential to make up to $25 starting out (if you have experience)!
