- Installing crown molding with lights. In this video I cover how to install crown molding. Then I show you how to install the Philips Hue lights to provide indirect lighting.
How to install crown molding so you can place LED lights for indirect lighting:
List of parts for Crown Molding measuring, cutting/mitering, installation, painting, caulking: amzn.to/3b3xQ5u
0:00 You will need to get power to the area of the crown molding.
0:51 Prepare each board for building out the crown molding.
1:33 Determine the location of every stud using a stud finder.
1:48 Miter each board according to the corner that it will fit on (outside corner or inside corner).
2:10 Nail the first level boards in 5 1/2" from the top (or the height that you choose). Use the precut blocks of wood to choose universal height around the perimeter. Each piece that you nail in you must make sure that the nail enters a stud and you must make sure you are not nailing into any wiring or piping.
4:01 Nail the second level boards in up 5/8" from the bottom of the first level board to give it a depth of the buildout.
5:30 Lastly, install the crown molding around the perimeter.
8:51 Paint and caulk the crown molding.
9:20 Configure the Philips Hue Bridge and LED kits
12:20 Install the Philips Hue power adapters and LED lights
13:15 Test your lights and look at your awesome work
13:59 If the corners of the crown molding do not line up as they were in my video you can easily solve this by gluing it with cyanoacrylate glue and use some boards as I did to create pressure from the ceiling on both the left and right pieces. Let it sit overnight and it will cure.

That's some lovely work but sweet jesus, $80 for 6.67 feet of LED light strip is insane.
Richard C. Mongler yes it is. I found some rope lighting that was mich cheaper by the foot on amazon.
i like Phillips
but
80 is too much imho
can buy it much cheaper from CHINA
U Do It what’s the name of the brand please cause 80 dollars hurt haha

Hell yea!
Legend has it, he is still liking comments from this video to this day
You bet cha!
Lol well I've just subscribed on this day so it's still getting watched
Well I was just gonna relax on my day off today... looks like I'm going to lowes now
Excellent!!! Post photos and tag me u.do.it on insta
I did a similar project ten years ago using regular white rope lights and a wall dimmer switch. Years later I put some faux grape vines up there. It still looks awesome. I like your installation methods better. Anyone who tries this should use your methods.
+Relerford Relerford Wow! Id love to see some photos of that. If you have them on instagram tell me you are going to poat links the post in a separate comment so I can allow them. Thank you for this comment!
Sending to my husband!! We must do this!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Sure thing. Any questions just reach out here or on twitter.
Excellent job my man!!!! I WISH I WAS MECHANICALLY INCLINED 😂😂😂 GUYS LIKE YOU ALWAYS AMAZE ME!
Thank you!
The level of genius with the "measuring blocks". That's awesome!
Thank you! I tend to make the simple complicated and the complicated easy. I appreciate that you noticed that!!! My wife calls me f...... stupid cause I dont get simple things.
problem is when the ceiling isn't perfect and your 1 block dips or rises. lasers work too but blocks are much easier to cut and use.
I was pretty impressed with this video. thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much Jeff!
Awesome video thanks for taking the time for this, I wanted led strips up, but thought they look too cheap ... Never thought of adding it to the crown molding! Very smart and creative 👏👏
Thank you. Yes the indirect lighting will yield the best result. You will need to use a controller every two strips. So plan on running multiple low voltage wires to keep the brightness consistent depending upon your room size.
This helped a lot. I've been looking for a while for a DIY for this so I can update my studio. Thank you so much. I learned a lot.
Thank you for the feedback. If you do this please post photos of your progress. You'll have to post a comment without a link first and tell me you are going to post a link otherwise it will mark it as spam and I probably will not find it.
after compilation 13.20 min., Satisfaction/happiness on the face! great work !
Yesssss! That is what it's all about!
Great job! Did something similar under my cabinets in the kitchen. after watching this I think I need this in the basement! Lol
YES!!! And tag me on insta or twitter after you do it so we can see!
Thanx for a good short video man.. Great idea, im surely gonna build this like you did
Thank you so much for all the details you showed in your video. You inspired me so much. I followed every step that you did. I have an amazing Home Theater Room now. I added the Philips Hue Sync Box to the TV as well. Thanks to you, my kids love it 😍
OMG this is sooo cool to hear. Anyway you can post some photos to instagram and tag me with permission to post a photo to my community tab here and also share in a video? If u have video footage demonstrating that and the sync box that would be great too. You can grab my email from about tab on my channel. Thank you again for sharing this!
Beautiful craftsmanship. Your skills are simply awesome. I have installed lights installed above my kitchen cabinets (and below them) for similar effects. Great work!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for posting this. I was looking for a solution to how I want my living room ceiling to look, I love the uplight with the coving which adds character to a room, I just wasn't sure how to achieve it. You've nailed the solution beautifully, thank you again
Glad you found it helpful. Some things I'd do differently if I were to do this again....Paint the wood that I put up because the reflection of brown does a subtle amount of light casting of brown, Paint the ceiling flat white (not semigloss) and Add a diffuser like sanded acrylic strips.
Wow, what an amazingly good quality video, high effort and high quality video description guide along with a detailed video guide to go with it. This is top shelf RUclips right here
Thank you for pointing that out. I put in a lot of time on certain videos and this was one of them.
Nice video man! That room is looking better all the time.
Chimpo Thank you Chimpo. We are getting there. Im doing a post mortem video of what I did, what I could do better, what I thought it would cost, how much it actual cost, what tools I had to buy, why it took so long....
Thanks for showing what tools you used other people just show when they are installing. Very good explanation of the steps that you do thanks
Thank you so much for this!
I know this is 3 years old, but this is great, besides painting the inside of wood channels I recommend an aluminum light strip holder with a diffuser to prevent the hot spots of light on the ceiling.
Thank you Intergalactic Gamer and congrats on 2k!!! A diffuser would have been SOOOO much better combined with a flat paint instead of the semigloss that I used.
This is absolutely beautiful! I wish I had half of the talent you do lol Thank you so much for the support and the inspiration to get involved with more tools! Lol
Hey thank you for stopping by! I appreciate the kind words!
you're very welcome! Keep it up! I've never been good at these kind of things but I love learning about them!
Thank you for the installation guide and the crown looks really good
Thank you!
This was the epitome of perfection! Thanks for sharing.
Awe thank you so much!
That end product is pretty sick! Makes for some awesome mood lighting!
Candid Tech Thank you! my son loves it. I wanna do it to my studio.
Yeah I can imagine that would look amazing there too!
This is CRASY I NEED TO DO THIS
Thank you!

Your video was incredibly well edited, and the work was exceptional as well. You should feel proud to be able to do this!
Thank you for this comment!!!
I did this about 12 years ago with rope lights. I did the ceiling in an embossed pattern wall paper imitating the tin ceiling look, which I painted with semigloss. I installed a medium sized crown molding for the ceiling. Then I dropped six inches and installed crown molding over a reversed base molding strip. I painted the inside of the lower crown molding with high gloss paint for reflectivity. It was a stunning effect and everyone who saw it loved it. I would video it, but I sold the house.
I would do a project like this again, although with LEDs and maybe a Beagle Bone Blue or even ESP32s.
Rollin Shultz post links to the photos if you have any. I would love to see them.
I searched, but couldn't find any pics. I was not big on photographing back in those days. I should have documented all of the major remodels and minor ones too for the eventual new owners, but I was working long hours and then remodeling as well, so I put it off and never did it. I am trying to mend my ways, so if I do it again at our 2nd house, I'll make images and video.
Arduino works well (and for a fair price cheaper then the Beagle) with the WS2811/12/12b/13 stuff... There is all sorts of effects and things you can do if you are thinking of doing the single board PC route.
I want to do stuff with that lighting so badly!!! Love it!! Great video!!
Thank you for your support and taking the time to leave a comment!
Beautiful job!!
+Kayinfso Here Thank you for taking the time to comment! Thank you for watching.
Awesome video. The detail in the text is very helpful. You mentioned a video on cutting the miters. Is this available? Thanks for the great job!
How sweet, It looks great. it's really classy in white in a kitchen. I'd love to do something like this in blue in my garage man cave or even in the basement for indirect lighting by the pool table. Thanks for the inspiration.
Just bought my first house and I’ve seen this in other nicer homes. Definitely doing it. Thanks for the tips.
Great! I would love to see what you do!
U Do It I’m leaning more towards recessed outlets for an easier installation. Other than that and it seems like the lights you had used we’re pretty bright. (Can you dim them?) This really helped amongst general concept and after that comes personal preference.

Good Tutorial. Good tip about painting the wood for color cast.
Thanks. One room done in this new old house! Now onto building a garage.
Good work! Looks nice! One tip I would suggest is on your scarf joins is to have the angle point away from the door or focal point of the room, so it's less visible when standing in that main area, but the filler hid the crack really well, thank you for a great video
I vaguely remember thinking about that when I was doing the joints. Thanks for the tip! Appreciate the feedback!
You're awesome, thanks for the great and helpful video.
Good video, I'm going to do this. What is the length of the gap between the ceiling and the top of the crown molding?
Thank you. I will measure again but I think it was 3.5 inches, which was enough for me to get my hand in there and plug in both power adapters into the outlet.
I wish you lived in nyc.. I do lightning and the guys I use don't have half your talent..you made it all look amazing..
May I recommend a different lighting kit to reduce the cost.. I do use the led's you do for commercial jobs. For home jobs I use these "IWISHLIGHT 32.8ft 10M SMD 5050 Dream Magic RGB Color LED Color Flexible Light Strip IP67 Water-resistant + IC6803 IC Chip + 133 Change RF Remote Controller + Power Supply Adaptor"
You can pass the savings down to a customers.... also consider a metal shinny channel with any led hidden unders view in the channle..before painting it..it just makes tge lights pop more..but you have such talent with woodwork.. it's amazing..hopefully I will meet someone like you some day.. thank you for this video.. fyi.. the set i suggested can be set up with a raspberry pie 3 ..used through Wi-Fi and set up with sensors to map movment ..just like the ones you use..if your going to try them feel free to reach out to me.. with the measurements and I'll let you know how you can do up to around 380 ft..with no loss of power in the strips..i love your handy work bro..im showing this to a few people..GREAT JOB
Thank you for the kind words! I'll check these lights out and let you know what I think about them. I like the idea of using the raspberry pie to control them. That would be a cool hack project!
Carl Gaspar use a constant controller if they are 12v

This is an insane build. Hats off to you
Good job, my friend! Thank you for sharing!
I installed that in my daughter's bedroom!

Great work man. Lot of money to buy all those tools a d craft it all. Nice work for sure. It's an Art instalation
+soraninja Thank you. I buy every tool for the job.
Nice to see your son working with you. My boys wish they helped their father more. Lol . My assumptions anyhow, great job, very nice. I'm doing a stain grade moulding. Very much a painful experience. Lucky I've have many years doing it. I love that look.
supurbe for store front sales at Macy's fashion week! lighting with clothing. thks for idea, Rodney
+Rodney Cromartie post links to photos of your work here but first tell me in a sepaparte comment that you are posting links b3cause it will mark it as spam Thanks for the comment!
do the light strips and bulbs work from the same bridge and app
Yes they do. You can have up to 50 devices on one bridge. I have 10 bulbs and 2 light strip controllers so that is 12 devices total on the bridge. My son added these all to his music studio so they are controlled within one room container within the app. You can then add existing themes or create your own themes to choose from. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Wow, results look really good.
First youtuber i ever hear recommending people who do not like the video to give it a thumbs down just for that ill give it a thumbs up 👍🏽

Thank you so much! Appreciate this!
I need to hire somebody to do this for my room...
what was the total length of the led?
Two controllers ... two segments... about 52feet combined total
@@UDoIt2 Did the LED's start to get dimmer if you ran only one power supply?
T Do it might not even light up after a certain length due to insufficient power. i recommend not to max the power supply to prevent overheating as well.
I love this video
+king k Thank you so much!!
great job man! starting my own crown molding job at home you make it look easy, I like the one man scaffold, moving an A frame ladder around is a pain. thanks for the tips. Mark NYC
THANK YOU! Yea, moving a ladder around eats up time. I have had a couple of close calls with the scaffold - a wee bit too high in confidence near the edge at times.
and then theres me feeling proud after taking 48 hours to build an Ikea draw set.
HAHAHAHA! Best comment ever! Let me tell you - Ikea furniture can be a very humbling experience. Then Mrs. U Do It comes in to help me figure stuff out! See I'm cursed - I can make the complicated seem simple at the expense of making the simple VERY complicated!

this by far is my favorite video of people installing LED lights

This is awesome, just did the lights like that stick and see controlled by an app also...looks cool. Great job!
Hey John, thank you for stopping by. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and I appreciate the feedback!
@@UDoIt2 💪
You can get a strip of "diffused" transparent plastic to run over the LED's (creating a tunnel instead of a "shelf/lip" for the LED's to sit in). This will unfortunately dim the lights slightly, but will completely break up the LED hot spots (you will no longer see the reflection of each individual LED on the ceiling, it will just be a very even light all the way around).
Great walk-through nonetheless, this is probably the most dedicated and professional ceiling LED setup I've seen on RUclips. Everyone else just sticks/staples the LED's directly to the drywall and calls it a day.
Wow! Thank you so much! I appreciate that! For me the biggest problem was the semigloss paint that I chose. And your suggestion would definitely help. I did that with a custom table I built for our local film and TV production company. Thank you again!
8:05- that gap, did you cope that?
He doesn't own a coping saw! you only 45 external corners and cope inside corners
Fuck no, he didn't cope anything.
so basically your whole house is for eating party drugs.
Ha! I'm crazy without drugs. I can't imagine how I'd be under the influence. I will never find out.
Dwight LMAO same
@Dwight Highly recommend it... My whole house is filled with LIFX lights and every time I trip I have those doing amazing color transitions. Whenever I turn on my lights now I get flashbacks lol
I just saw this comment! AWESOME!!!!
ZobbyHD I hear that. Last time I took acid in my apartment which is covered in Led lights and strips, even had some of those new kind of blue Christmas lights around an archway... tripped for like 12 hours having to make my way thru labyrinths in many different dimensions like led strips, Christmas lights and even a wild guitar string dimension. To summarize, it was amazing acid
This video is so good, thanks for posting it. I'm thinking about this kind of project, and don't have nearly the experience that you have. The way you explained everything was so understandable. Amazing results, too. That room looks great.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I started building things very young with my dad who taught me a lot of what I know today. But there are many things that I don't know but I'm jump in and figure it out. Sometimes I cuss in disbelief when things don't workout but then I take a step back and try again. DIY construction comes with its price - sometimes you ignore the overall cost of a project because you are making purchases a little at a time. The molding itself in this wasn't so expensive but the Philips Hue bulbs and light strips were VERY pricey. I tried not to spare any expense since it was for my son. This was one of the easiest projects and the thing that really helped was the right tools (router / pneumatic finishing nailer / compound miter saw) and those jigs that I crafted. The jigs will help most crown molding installation go very quickly. Ask the questions, post a couple of photos on instagram or twitter and tag me and I'll see what I can do. If I can't answer it I will have my cousin answer it - he is a home builder. Thanks again!
You are awesome :)))
this was actually really fly, preciate the look. you killed it bruh

Thank you so much. And thank you for taking the time to comment!
Your end result was truly fantastic!!! It’s incredible how easy you made it look too!!
I’m curious, has anyone reading this done this or a similar project on textured walls or ceilings and has it turned out nearly as good as this one?
ohhh textured walls - My guess is if you mark out with a pencil or chalk line at the bottom part where the first board would be attached and remove the texture. If the texture is small (low profile) it might not be a big deal. But if the texture is heavy then you will want to flatten it out either by removing it or doing a Paul Peck Drywall Skim coat over the area that will be behind the board.
thank you so much for this, crown molding is a really hard to cut correctly you made this look easy !!!!
glz 268 Thank you. It is beat if it is coped but it worked out better foe me that it wasnt cause I was able to glue the pieces together with cyanoacrylate. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

this is so amazing , I love it .
breezy channel . Thank you!!
Pretty friggen cool! I wish I had of done this, I just put up crown molding in my bedroom. Would have been awesome for ambient light.
There is one suggestion I have, you should get some thin plexiglass or acrylic panels and cut them into strips then scuff them up and use them to diffuse the light and give it a more even and uniform glow. They can just be rested on top of it, no need to fasten them down, I seriously doubt they would get knocked out of place. Plus it would make keeping those clean super easy, the way it is now you'll have to shop vac all the dust and god knows what else out lol.
Thank you for this suggestion! I have no idea what it looks like up there. I might 3DPrint an attachment just for cleaning the crownmolding and add some bristles like they use on CNC dut collectors. That design would probably be done during a livestream. And it would work very well with acrylic. Thanks again!
you make things look so easy.....Great videos.......
