@TheTaleofTheIronSnail
Scottish tweed, Scottish wool, Scottish Scottish, Harris Tweed, etc. You can't talk about Scotland without talking about wool (and sheep). Today we are diving into the wool cloth being made for The Iron Snail Mammoth Special Edition Woolen Jacket. This cloth isn't like Filson's Mackinaw, WeatherWool's, The Standard Issue Mammoth, or anyone else's (besides the few other companies using Sam's cloth). I'm not saying it's better but it's certainly wildly different, Sam calls it "artisan cloth".
Once again, thank you to Sam Goates over at Woven In The Bone for being so incredible.
Bye.
Can I interest you in a hot bowl of following ME and The Snail in other places??

The Iron Snail is a men’s fashion vlog starring a young man named Michael and featuring a snail no bigger than a quarter. The two are set on taking over the world of fashion by creating a clothing line to end all clothing lines. Until then, we’re here to tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about the best clothing out there, from the highest quality raw denim jeans to the warmest jackets to the sturdiest boots…the Iron Snail has got you covered. (written by Taylor, though Michael is sometimes known to talk about himself in the third person… xoxo)
**THREE VERY QUICK NOTES**
1. Sign up for emails at theironsnail.us to get the most up to date info on when more Mammoths are coming!
2. "Weaving Songs" by Donald S. Murray is no longer not in print! It's back IN print!
3. Hello everyone.
i liked the video you have a very nice videography style
Hello Michael! Excellent video. Thank you for making these exceedingly special products and bringing attention to these wonderful artisans! I ordered a Mammoth jacket, and this has just made me even more ecstatic to receive it. Thanks again Michael!
I love wool. I have a wool blanket from France and a Wool hat and merino wool socks made in U.S.
Why do you think this video got so little views compared to your other masterpieces?:( I loved this lady how she named all of her heaters
This has got to be your best video so far.
These have always been fun to watch, but your storytelling here has really kicked up a knotch. Your narration is very refined and paces the story well, and you gave Sam's interview segments plenty of time to breathe as she tells her story; there is a palpable atmosphere to the video. Not to mention your visuals are some of the best yet, particularly impressed with your color grading. You're getting some gorgeous dynamic range out of some of these vistas. I can tell you were excited to compose some of these shots.
Keep it up, man.
I could not agree more, absolutely stunning video!
I’m in complete agreements.
Here here! A young pro mastering his craft with a master of their craft…truly something special was made.
Well thank you for the incredibly kind words!
@@TheIronSnail Thanks for making videos!
I see you got the best of the Scottish weather on your travels. Thanks for supporting Scottish industry, I'm sure with this level of care all your jaiskets will turn out lovely
Thank you so much!!
The heater naming bit was too cute.
My wife and I enjoyed a visit with Sam in May of '23 as part of our exploration of current weaving in Scotland. It was encouraging to see such wonderful work in progress. Thanks for bringing to a wider audience.
So glad you got to visit her! Thanks for the kind words
In rural France a woman weaves, on a hand loom, all the tweed binding for the couture clothes by Chanel.
**gets on plane**
@@TheIronSnailyes! I will be looking for that story! 😊
That location is beautiful
Great video! It was strange enough to see that you are in the UK but to then realise you are in Buckie was bizarre! Buckie is about as obscure a town as you could hope to find but my Dad was born there and we used to have holidays in Buckie when I was a child. My uncle Alec was a herring trawlerman who sailed out of Buckie harbour and Uncle Selwyn was with the Fleet Air Arm based in Lossiemouth. The local dialect is called Doric and my sister and I, who were both born and raised in Hertfordshire, which is just north of London, could barely make out what our aunts and uncles were saying. You've tapped a rich vein here, thank you and I hope you enjoy your visit.
Wow, small world! That’s cool to hear your connection, it’s a lovely area!
The guy i sat next to on the plane there never heard of Buckie and lived in Scotland all his life…that’s when i knew
I grew up witnessing weaving like this. My mom had a small cottage business weaving tea towels, rugs, baby blankets, etc. Sadly she’s now nearly blind so she rarely makes anything on her looms.
Wow, an amazing craft to be a part of
I’m sure you have plenty of beautiful creations!
love this channel. and love scotland.
Ty and ty!
Glad you got the tropical warm weather for yer visit
lol!
Just randomly picked up your channel, and this specific clip is wow just wow, having the educational edge like PBS, the easy dive and hook of Netflix, the relatable character and storytelling like Anthony Bourdain. Super impressed so far, keep it up!
More videos like this please! Would love to see other small producers like this, and their craft
Wow, your videos have always shown the time and craft you put into it , but you have outdone yourself on this one and enjoyed Sam Goates's story. Very well done!
I love all of your content, but this was my favorite video of yours.
It’s awesome to share this journey with you and see the amazing people you are meeting and working with along the way.
Thank you - that means a ton!
I am 2:08 minutes in of the video and I fell in love already... a place so human that names heater is probably the best place you can be on earth. Thanks for making this video, it makes all of us richer knowing that place like this exist. thanks again (I am sorry I can subscribe only once to your channel)
Well thank you for the kindest comment ever
what an awesome little shop and owner. love seeing these types of things. everything about that little stores story is so wholesome and heartwarming. i hope once she retires there is somebody deserving of the opportunity to take her place ready to go and treat the store, the machines, the whole process and the customers who she doesnt want to let down with the same love she obviously does.
It's really great that you're using this collaboration in your business as a way to elevate such a great and talented person and their story. Excellent use of your platform!
Michael you're crushing it! It's so cool to see exactly where and how the special edition is being made. And the way that you film it feels really personal as you show us who is making the garments as well.
I just love her! That is the kind of person/company I want to buy from
Came back to watch this video because I am so excited for the release!
I love Michael's content but he really has the film-making skills to back it up. The lighting, shooting, and editing are always on point, even more so in this one.
Thank you very much!
Watching those old machines going is pretty neat to look at.
Oh it’s fascinating
Really excellent video, I wish there was more! Would love to know how they maintain those old machines and where they find parts. SEH Kelly used Woven in the Bone wool on their Ulster this year and I regret not moving heaven and earth to get one.
Thank you! Day to day maintenance and tuning I do myself, as for parts… John and a couple other gentlemen help me out with repairs and making new parts when needed :-)
Really cool story. Love how she names her heaters.
My sister is the wordsmith 😊
Brilliant job!! You really captured the look and feel of the place, people, and process. Very enjoyable to watch! Thanks so much!!!
Thank you!!
This video is absolutely incredible. The insight is not only to the artisan but to the history of the nations which were built from these very techniques. Such a joy to watch. Truly well done!
🙏😊
This gets me even more excited for my mammoth and seeing the exclusive woven in the bone fabric!
Sam is such a treasure. Thanks for giving her and her craft more light! The Mammoth looks brilliant! Congrats on the collab!
What a great story! So cool and inspiring to see talents like this live on
I absolutely love this video! I’m so pleased you’re bringing this heritage skill to your audience to see. Wonderful lady, too.
🙏
Thank you!
In all seriousness the Moray coast is beautiful in any weather, a great drive in the ancient VW a bite in bijou by the sea ( Cullen skink if cold ) if it’s still there, then another failed attempt to launch a stone through bow fiddle rock for luck before the drive home, plus Buckie thistle have great shared heritage with Celtic fc
Bijou By The Sea is now called The Catch 😊
@@woveninthebone1650😍😋
Phenomenal story telling behind this project!
Thank you!!
You were HERE?! In Scotland?! My man.
I hope you enjoyed your stay! 🏴
Phenomenal video; very interesting indeed.
I LOVE SCOTLAND!! Taylor has declared it’s her favorite country
High praise indeed!
If you guys are ever over here again, do feel free to drop me a message and I'd be happy to take you guys for a flight in a light aircraft to see some of the central belt/east coast from above (St Andrews, Edinburgh, etc). Would be a pleasure!
Well that would be an absolute delight that we'd fully take you up on! We're coming back next year! @@HARRIS_ANDERSON
This is just gold! Amazing story telling.
Thank you!!
Lovely woman, beautiful story. Truly heartwarming
I agree!!
Ive been to Buckie. Also in February. It was about 20 years ago and we were lucky with how mild the weather was too because it can be a lot worse than that up there at this time of year
Beautiful
Great video Michael - really enjoyed this one, particularly as I grew up near Buckie!
The Mammoth's gunna be a wee special jacket, bonny snail !!!
Here’s hoping!!!
Cool video. Now wondering how mass-produced fabric is made. Can you make a comparison video?
I love the weave on her vest. Thanks so much for this content...SO interesting.
Great to see Buckie! I also know Donald S. Murray -- did some editing work on a book of his a few years back
Well that’s very cool!
This is a wonderful video. It would be super cool to see more of these types of stories
Herdwick sheep are the cutest fuckin things I’ve ever seen. Why is this the detail that makes me want this jacket?
Edit: also, what a lovely woman. Glad you’re working with good people for this jacket.
This was so well done, hearth warming, and You just make me to want to be part of this and get this colab even when its totaly out of my budget. Thank you for this.
Thank you!!
Watching from Aus...your videos kept getting better. Nice work on this one.
*IM WEARING A PAIR OF HAND WOVEN HARRIS TWEED TROUSERS* - I bought 102m of various Harris Tweeds at a bankruptcy auction last month and I can tell you - its different, its lovely.
It started of very oil/waxy and shiny which made chalking it a nightmare. Once worn for a few days a nap has raised and its SO tactile, its like wearing warm moss, or a fuzzy cactus but its nice to touch. I cant describe it cos I have not had a cloth like this before. It feels like heather LOOKS.
Please note this is not Harris Tweed!
@@woveninthebone1650 I was more making a comment about hand woven cloth and how its so much more tactile than modern projectile loom cloth.
I loved your shed and your work - I wish you the very very best.
Sounds like a delightful wool!!! I can’t wait to see Sam’s cloth change over time
Absolutely love the video. You captured the process brilliantly. It was lovely meeting you and Taylor. Hope you are back in Buckie soon.
Great meeting you John!!
One of the coolest videos i've seen on here. And I've been on youtube since the beginning, when you needed adobe flash player.
Excellent work, Michael! Fantastic watch.
Thank you!!
A USA made jacket from Scottish wool worn in Iceland is something I’ll try to make happen
This was brilliant. Thank you, Michael!
Thank you!!
Quality content Mike! Great to hear Sam's story.
Fantastic job. Keep pushing.
what a nice video! Good to see you on a field-trip!
Glad to be on one!
Can’t wait to see a limited edition Mammoth with this wool.
This is amazing you managed to get ahold of this fabric. You have my attention now
THIS was a cool video. Loved it. I really enjoyed the tight shots where it was just ur face and the a bit of coastal landscape. Great narration man.
Thank you!!
My neck of the woods...might have to buy one of these forthcoming jackets!
I agree!
Now THAT would be worth the cost of ownership. Truly handcrafted. Amazing piece, Michael. Question is…..what was on your wrist?😂
Absolutely brilliant!!!
Sam is lovely!!
One of the coolest videos you’ve done. Loved it!
Also your Moonrise Kingdom allusions are not lost on me!
Thank you and LOL!
So glad I'm subscribed to this channel
TY!
Wes Anderson production quality
Well ty! Maybe a little bit too much Wes this time
This was incredibly interesting to watch, the names of the heaters nice touch!
Though I enjoy all your videos, this has to be my favourite so far! ❤
Well thank you!!
Beautiful video.
This. Is. Awesome!
Sam is the greatest!
This is one of your better Wes Anderson influenced videos.
Bahaha a little too wes looking back on it but that’s okay
Mic sounds amazing with all that wind.
I was so grateful for that lol
The absolute madness it takes to engineer something like that. Let alone to learn to use it. Crazy
It’s 100% true
Amazing video my friend!
Fantastic video! Thank you!!!
Thank you!
Phenomenal video sir. Thanks
Thank you!
This intro could be a Wes Anderson Movie
I’ll tell you right now, I’d pay whatever they want for a coat from them! Can’t wait for the redrop!! 😊
what a wholesome video! well done!
Thank you very much!
So, Sam and her sister Sally sell Shetland by the seashore? 😄
the wes anderson love always shows but it was really showing in the intro of this video
This video melted me heart
So glad!
Now I see why there was a paus between videos (not that there's anything wrong with that). So cinematic! Miss your denim content though..!
It’s coming back come spring time!! Also oh the pause was killing me
@@TheIronSnail Hey don't sweat it Michael! Sounds great, btw my second name is Michael :)
loved watching this
So glad!
lovely.... great video
Thank you!
Great videi
Brilliant!
Sam is brilliant!!
if you are still in the UK, youneed to go to greggs try their patries and go to tesco get a tesco meal deal
Bet you loved walking down by the pet cemetery in cullen to get that shoots😂😂. Im from Findochty just a few miles from buckie ad pass there shed daily and never even knew😂.
Was that intro directed by Wes Anderson??? That was amazing.
You making me jealous with that coat I can’t have
The ad was entirely too aggressive given the soothing nature of the rest of the video 😅 What an incredible artisan.
I agree, but if being shown the ad is the cost of having the video made then that is a cost I would gladly pay hahaha
Great video.
Hi! Great vidéo. I was wondering what brand of beanie you are wearing in it. Thanks.
Lovely video
People underestimate the desire for well made fabrics. If you take time to talk to people that love clothing you will realize that fabric and quality is always in the conversation. The problem is finding the balance of quality and value. If you don't care to change your clothes so often, then spending a few hundred dollars on a piece is a no brain-er. If you change pieces often, then it becomes a dilemma.
This was my comment - Im a bespoke tailor of mens historic suits: IM WEARING A PAIR OF HAND WOVEN HARRIS TWEED TROUSERS - I bought 102m of various Harris Tweeds at a bankruptcy auction last month and I can tell you - its different, its lovely.

Anyone who put these on would immediately know where the extra money went, its a completely different product to mass-produced cloth.
This is pure facts!
Really cool.
Thanks!
lovely
Ty from me and Sam!
When she is talking about the threads going through the loom…. It sounds like a bit out of the InterDimensional TV episode from Rick and Morty 😂😂
I love your content! keep it up
Thank you!!
