What is in my EDC, everyday carry? 237 year old Russian reindeer* leather...it's real! It's not clickbait! I can't believe my eyes either! Today we journey into the weird and wacky world of Russian reindeer* leather. Not only is this odd, but it's also over 200 years old and from a shipwreck called the Metta Catharina...how much better can you get! I'm delirious.
Bye.

*i snagged this wallet specifically to make this vid and talk about the wild story! Thanks for allowing me to have the coolest job in the world where I can buy 237 year old wallets*
Is it definitely real? Want to make sure before I buy one
I had one of my best friends make me a Wallet for my 30th birthday from horween leather. I’m 32 now, and I’m excited to see the fades, as they come, and pass it on
Got a photo?
Patina 🤌
I drive by Horween all the time, have yet to gone in tho. I'm thinking about getting some from Ashland leather, could always use another hobby. It's crazy that there once were a bunch of tanners there in Chicago, only the best remained.
@@snuffspoonyou are in every comment section I see.
Every video, Michael gets slightly more manic and I'm here for it.
Also, 'dem Bean Boots.
I’m mostly convinced that the origin of the story is true. However, at this point, at least a decade after Cleverly has started selling these things commercially, it just seems suspicious that despite the claim of rarity and popularity, they never seem to actually run out of it. There’s just always more products made of this leather that are on offer from Cleverly and others. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, I'm sure the supply is limited but I suspect there was a boatload of it...
Apparently they carried more than 100 metric tons of load so it's easily possible that they recovered 20 tons of leather which would make about 10.000 square meters of leather. You can make a lot of wallets, watch straps and shoes out of that.
It's similar to Cone Mills denim. The White Oak plant shuttered in 2017/2018, but you can still find new jeans being made with Cone Mills fabric.
I've casually asked how this is possible on online forums and the prevailing theory is there's still a boatload of denim left. That, and some brands actually use non-American Cone Mills fabric.
@@Py687i’m sitting on about 10 yards of it in my work shop. One of these days I’ll commission someone to make me some stuff from it
That's because George Cleverly is a bespoke shoe maker. It takes a couple of years to get a pair of shoes made and will cost you $6,000+ (probably a fair bit more for this leather). Their production numbers are tiny.
For info, they also have a mass produced range made by Northampton shoe manufacturers at a tenth the cost but don't offer this leather.
IWC used this leather for straps on a limited run of Mark pilot watches a few years back
A 1862 old world tannery in England thats still operating today called J&FJ Baker is producing this leather with the same texture and recognizable smoked meat smell! They also make some of the best oak bark tanned leathers around, I've been fortunate enough to obtain some of their leathers and it's always a joy to work with such a piece of history!! It will be a sad day if they ever close shop!
I’m really glad you know about this leather. It’s just leather and as I said previously in a video of yours it’s just a cracking story.
You just got to love leather. In fact any material/products that lasts generations. Of course the craftsmanship is just as important as the material.
Great episode with some really interesting history! Thank you!! Happy holidays!
Fascinating story. Love these type of crazy stories that go along with such unique items.
I’m always entertained by your videos.
Also Happy birthday!
I have a Metta Katerina watch strap that I use for a couple of my watches. Beautiful leather, smells amazing
Glad to see you and Taylor are still together!
Happy birthday!
Great channel!!!! Man I have been missing out ❤❤
Happy Be-lated Birthday Snail!
Emailing with Robert right now to get myself a card holder. Thanks for sharing this, Michael. Definitely catnip to me.
Like that Heat Straps Workhorse you rockin bud
What a coincidence. Just saw a guy posting his strap made of this exact leather on the Paneristi group yesterday. Looks great tbh.
Great material !!
Ha! I love your videos. They crack me up! What the hell was that a 1:55! So funny. And happy Birthday!
We want a more detailed look and review of the Heats Straps jacket.
Cool wallet, Michael.
Hey Michael, just had a look at Stetson after seeing your Oppenheimer hat video, and am surprised to see neither you nor Rose Anvil having made any boot reviews of Stetson so far (afaik), despite a good amount of their boots being in the same price range as Red Wing. Are they comparable? Or are Stetsons all looks and little function? Would be very cool to see if you'd like to make something on it! Hope you're doing good, cheering you on with the brand and the jackets!
Two videos in two days? You spoil us Mike 😳
This reminds me of shackleton's whiskey. Whiskey that was found buried under ice at the base camp for shackletons antarctic expedition 100 later in 2010.
That is absolutely uncanny, I close my eyes and King Charles is making a cameo in your video, I open my eyes and there you are again
Have you heard of heat straps chief coat, I want to see you review it, 😘
The Vasa ship is incredible
That’s one killer wallet!
Mike - where’s the jacket from?! I dig your stuff
I just got to the part of the video lol
Happy birthday though!
Jacket looks nice. Any experience with seager co stuff? They seem pretty cool
I'm googling sheep rack raindear leather on weekly basis!
I would do some things in order to get one of those hides.
Man you know how to make a video. That’s a sick story behind a wallet.
ayyyyyoooooo december 5th bdayyyyy wwwwat is gooooodd skkkkkkuuurrrrrrttttt
Fascinating
Man, you didn’t even mention that J&FJ Baker, in the UK, has recreated this leather. It’s pretty expensive, but not as much as shell cordovan. I bought a sample of it. Very nice but nothing like what’s shown in the video. Smells very good, sort of smokey because of that birch oil they used in tanning it. It’s supposed to be made the same way, minus the 200 years in the ocean lol
I use the genuine 1786 leather and am the maker of this card case, and I can tell you that the Baker's 'recreation' bears no resemblance to the original leather.
@@robross8482I have been using bakers products for a while, specifically their oak bark tanned butts. I’ve never tried their remake of the reindeer stuff. Have you ever tried the other products in their catalogue? If so what do you think? Just curious as a fellow leather enthusiast.
@@clipdumptheir oak tanned harness is incredible. Most tough and premium veg tanned leather I’ve used for a belt. Very stiff, and premium feeling. Made the Wickett and Craig harness look and feel like junk.
@@robross8482yeah the sample seemed weird, really dry. Wouldn’t use it for anything I do. How much is the real stuff? I’ve never seen it for sale?
My lord this is a good video
I see Michael in my dreams. Happy birthday soon.
Can I just say, I love that he calls us fans Snailiens
I like the snailiens
Didn't Horween recreate this leather recently?
Do you have any pbj Henley??
Where the mammoth jacket at?
Metric
Have you seen the waxed puffer that dickies made? It’s absolutely insane
NO WAY!
5:23 anyone else heard JC Biver? wrong channel I know, but still:D
I assume that's a small Heat Straps jacket you're wearing? I wish they'd slim it down just one more size so skinny guys could pick one up. It's just so oversized.
Sounds like a wonderfull romantic and rare material where crafters want to work with. If i being a timetravel treasure hunter... I would search more this stuff than gold. Butttttttt i have a thing to say: its survive this sea.. Great. Its special but... Vegged tanned leather isnt soooo rare. Modern leather items are tanned with chrome chemicals. Makes a lot of the same quality of leather. Tanned leather have some wins if you search something what you can bring into speacial forms.. Bottles and boxes. Lower health risks for the bottleprojects they are more than decoration. Aand so one. Maybe this Russian leather is more special but vegged tanned leather isnt soooo rare. Any tanning ingredients allow a good quality.. If you can do this. I cant make it. Interesting point: i see some researchers that find out that native europe hunters putting skins in a swamp for severel weeks and months. And after this, they got leather for shoes and stuff... Not peeing on a bison skin in the sun.... Just putting in a swamp hole and wait. Thats the most low budget and eco-friendly way that i could find for leather. I cant say which pros and cons this leather offer but.. No chemicals or plants.. Just the microbiology stuff.
Don't worry they will dig the rest out in few years
When you're buying 237 year old Russian reindeer wallets, you may have a problem 😂
Michael perhaps??
And to think that regular leather that you can get at the store was around the same period of time. It just was not in the molecular structure of an animal hide. 🎉😅😂
Given that reality as we know it is nothing more than the harmonics of carbon😅.
I guess it makes sense for a species that thinks it's a solid when it's actually a liquid.
Huh
SNAILIANS
I hope that these items will bring you happiness once you have enough
Michael buy 237 year old Russian reindeer leather wallet = I click thumbnail. It easy.
So, this boat leather is 99.9% false advertisement, Jargon and clickbait, which is designed to trigger people who want something that is rare and exotic, so much so that they are willing to falsely claim it is raindeer? Fascinating. Thanks for the video Iron Snail!
Wow, 300 pounds card holder, may be if it comes with a certificate, may be….
You’re so little!
The original leather has long gone. The stuff you all purchase today is fake. Sorry…..🇬🇧
Overpriced!
Going to be honest, what an absolute nothingburger of a story...
Kirby Allison did a better job of explaining this. I wouldn’t watch this video.
Oddly, it seems that you did watch the video... 🤔
Michael has the best videos so I am going to have to hit X to doubt.
