    Coyotes are VERY smart. Once they get used to the can shaking noise they'll pretty much ignore it. A real deterrent is to make them physically uncomfortable so they leave in order to feel like they are preserving their well being. Many people need to be actively doing it so they don't identify the coyote aversion "experts" by smell or sight. Maybe they even need to be hosed down with something like pepper spray and occasionally shot with rubber bullets. Causing short term pain for coyotes is much better than allowing death or disability to humans because we underestimate how smart or aggressive coyotes really are.
