I love the fact that while Makoto, Yu and Ren's names come from the anime adaptations, Kotone's name is from the P3 stage musicals.

It was a lot more common before the fighting game came out, since it was a case of the anime having one name and the manga having the other. If you go back to some old forums from 2009 to 2011 you'd probably see a lot of it.

Before the anime was a thing, I remember reading a LOT of fanfics where his name was Souji Seta, so while I generally like "Yu Narukami" since it's a pretty cool name, Souji will always have a place in my heart since it's connected to so many good memories of those fanfics.
the only place ive seen it is. yu & yosuke's ship name being "souyo"

For Yu there's not discussion. He was in so many different games with that name we took it for granted. For Makoto we had the movies and for him and Ren the Dancing games, but most people said because they're not canon, they cannot be taken seriously. Personally, I loved the name Kotone, and now it was chosen for the port it made me happy

The japanese persona 5 fans just call him "Shujin" since that is the japanese word for prisoner and its what caroline and justine call him. Thats why the ship name for him and akechi is shuake.
The confirmation for the protagonists' names from Atlus was a really bitter pill to swallow for OG manga readers. My best friend and girlfriend were a little bitter that Makoto's name is not Minato as canon.
Honestly no ones stopping you from still using Minato. Sure Makoto is his canon name (which is a nice name btw) but clearly Atlus doesnt care if WE Call him that. He's a protagonist we can name after all.

1. Neither the OP nor the first comment responding can even get the names they're writing right; it's "Amamiya" and "Kurusu," not "Amamiyama" and "Kusuru."
2. Akira isn't even in the top 1000 most common names in Japan, but even if it was, how the hell is it racist for a Japanese writer to use a common Japanese name for a Japanese character?
3. Akira is predominantly, and more importantly, in this particular case, a given name, not a surname.
(saying "predominantly" just because I can't be bothered to go out of my way to verify that there are actually zero people with Akira as their non-stage name surname)
Persona 5 is Akira Kirusu. That’s even his name in the manga.
The other Protagonists also has different names in the mangas and Atlus still prioritize the Anime names.

And that's literally the only time that that name is used. The manga isn't technically made by the same people as the games, and since there wasn't a canon name at the time they picked a random one. Akira Kirusu is literally the most generic ass Anime name ever. It's like calling somebody John Anime.
Ren Amamiya is used not only in the anime, but also literally in the games.
If this debate pops up again for P6 I might just go insane. At this point we can ignore the manga name as it’s never canon. Prefer it if you want but don’t argue for canonicity.

Every playthrough, every stage play, every adaptation. It's all canon, just a different parallel universe. This is why the stage plays change the protagonist names every time, to show it's a different universe.
That playthrough where you maxed out all the romance social links before summer with the name Buttface Senpai is considered equally canon to someone doing a 100% playthrough as Makoto Yuki.

Most people forget Souji Seta as it was only used in the Persona 4 manga, which isn't too popular.
Also i heard Yosuke is more the Protagonist there than Yu/Souji.
that was my first experience with Persona, or maybe I played 1 first, though sadly not the mystical dream that PSX 1 has, Legends Awaken is such a great track, I'll dare say it tops anything of Meguro's

I like all the canon names, and use them when playing through the games, but I hate verbally saying Yu Narukami's first name outloud as part of a sentence, and so now I just always call him Narukami

@@hacksmashYeah, it just doesn't work when "you" and "Yu" are pronounced the same and "you" is already used to refer to the person you're talking to. So when you say "Yu" in english it's just confusing.
For the P3 i like to calle them Minato and Minako bc i like to headcannon them as siblings

I found the idea that the P5 Stage pretty much just used a different first and surname for every change of day for the Protag incredibly funny because of the divide on whether or not he should be Akira or Ren.
Useless fact : In Korea back in 2011, most fans thought that P4 protag's Canon name is Yu Narukami ofc(P4 Anime was aired here on TV so its just familiar to everyone). But when they wanted to use some canon name in game, they forced to use Seta Souji cuz the name input UI of korean version of PS2 P4 limits to 3 syllables for both last name and first name, preventing 'Narukami' to be used since even if u tried to do that it will be just typed as 'Naruka Miyu'. This was fixed since PSV P4G, so Amamiya didnt had this problem from the beginning

I was once on the side of Akira for Joker’s name, and then I saw a clip from the anime of Ryuji calling him RenRen. I also find it cute that even though she had a canon name, everyone still likes to call the female P3 protagonist FeMC.
It's just my own name. I like to escape reality and that's the best way to do it.

I know that they are usually referred to as Makoto Yuki and Kotone Shiomi, but I went with Minato Arisato for the male protagonist due to Persona 5 already having a Makoto and Minato rung better for me. For Kotone, I used Minako Arisato because I want to also see them as counterparts rather than twins when playing the ports. I hope you understand.

I like the canon names they give the characters. But I am getting tired of people always "Correcting" other people when they don't use the canon names. Let the people use the names they prefer to call them! Even still I still use Minato, Minako, and Akira for the 3 and 5 protagonists.

Akira Kurusu never made sense to me when the whole point of the PT was that they DIDN'T kill people.
Akira Kurusu means "Vessel of Dawn" not "Killer Kill" like everyone else said though.

I've always had the protags named Hiro (like Hero). I can't remember if that's from anything official, but like it's always just felt right.
Then there’s me who’s watched the p5 stage plays and calls him Itsuki Onda
They're also all used in the dancing games. I thought it was common knowledge the dancing games confirmed these names a while ago. They also use 'makoto yuki' 'yu narukami' and 'ren amamiya' for the protagonists in the selection screens.
dancing game = spin off game = "not main game so not canon" mentality by a lot of people.

@@FazPersona the persona 4 dancing game is canon as far as we know, persona 3 and 5 was never really made explicitly canon, but they explain that they will forget it when they wake up from the dream anyway, so if it was canon it wouldn't affect or matter the main story. Even if they aren't 'main' games, they're still games of the franchise that have storylines that can be easily placed amongst the main timeline and are official games. So i always just thought the named used there were the canon ones either way. I suppose it's good to have confirmation though.

There actually was a long time where people used that name.
Even with the Anime series and the announcement of Arena and Golden, people still clung to the manga name because it's what forums, artists, and fanfics used for a couple years by that point.
When Arena came out new-age fans started to use Narukami, especially in the context of the fighting game. It was about the time Dancing came out that it felt like people fully switched over.
My favorite is to use my own name for immersion.
For P5 i just mixed the first and last names making Ren Kurusu and it actually fits the best parts of his names

Here's a funny coincidence. When I first played P4 without knowing anything about it, I named the mc Soujiro Seta based on Rourouni Kenshin villain, it turned out really close to his official 2nd name 😅

I know that Ren Amamiya is his official name basically, but "Ren Amamiya" and "Akira Kurusu" feel like they're different characters -- Ren Amamiya being the personality we're given in the anime and manga, and Akira Kurusu feels like it fits his more... colder? Demeanour, I guess? In the game... I hope this makes sense to other people as it does for me... I do use the two interchangeably though, although because I've played the game more than I've consumed the anime I default to Akira Kurusu more.

Wait until they know that the Stage Play version have MORE names, some of them are names given by other people. Each day/play have 1 different name, so if they are 20 plays in a single play in single series, it means that there are 20 names.
I use Ren for P5. However, I think the duo of Akira and Akechi is a lowkey genius naming convention, so in other games where we get to name the protaganist and antagonist, I usually use them.

For all that I remember 'souji seta' apparently being similar/comparable to John Doe (or was it John Smith?), I still think that's preferable to Yu (which is a perfectly fine first name) *Narukami* (thundergod? Really? That's too on the nose).
In P3, we had Minato Arisato ForEver, before he was given the name Makoto, which, even if the kanji or whatever is different (which made sense for the Tatsuyas' and their parallels from P2) is still phonetically the Same as Makoto from p5.
And when it comes to Ren/Akira in p5, anyone who Knows anime knows about 'Akira', one of the most impressive anime ever created (plus those huge foreheads), which makes the name Akira pretty badass.
But even if his Canon name is also unsubtle (though not as much as Yu's) Ren has grown on me.
Minako/Hamuko was just a cute alternative that, much like Minato, had been in use for so long that it was a cute fanon name for a character that atlus seemed content to ignore constantly, that the fandom felt deserved better. But Kotone was a perfectly nice name too, so you don't find too many anywhere having an issue; so long as she's getting screen time we're happy.

I prefer Akira Kurusu over Ren Amamiya mostly because I like the sound of Akira better, but the Renren part in the anime was really cute! My headcanon is that Aki in this case means fall, but the actual kanji used means dawn. I think its a really pretty name and fits with the "red" theme and change! Ren's kanji means lotus, which can mean strength and rebirth , but i prefer dawn because of the colour associations
For persona 3 i actually pick the names in pairs, such as Makoto and Kotone (Their nicknames Koto), Minato and Minako/Hamuko (Mina as a nickname). I do prefer Minato as Male MC's name because it produces less confusion with Makoto from P5
For FemMC, problem is that there's 3 names that are highly debated, Hamuko, Minako or Kotone. Im more used to Hamuko/Minako but I like Kotone due to how it means, "Koto" can mean sound (orpheus).
For persona 4, i like Yu Narukami because of the "No Yu" jokes potential, and also because his last name can mean Lightning God, which i think suits his persona, Izanagi, nicely!
I think most people used Yu and Ren already. But the one people are more split about are the P3 MC and FEMC names. Personally I like Minato and Minako since they sound more related with each other, like they're siblings.

I'm always one for canon names. So I will gladly go with Makoto, Kotone, Yu, and Ren any day.
Besides, if you take the ports into account, it means that Kotone Shiomi is technically the FeMC's official name.

I preferred Minato for the male P3 MC, Minako for the female P3 MC, and Yu for the P4 MC. However, I could never chose which name I liked better for the P5 MC, and I ended up calling him Joker for a while, until I got the idea to fuse the names. People of the comments section, I present to you:

As much of a hot take this may be, gotta be a little honest here. I was exposed to the manga of persona 4 shortly after completing the vanilla version of the game back in the day, where Golden was didn’t exist and learned the MC name at the time, which was “Souji Seta”. Loved how the way it sound and felt that it had a more unique and badass vibe compared to “Yu Narukami”. May only be me, but always wanted to express this opinion. Awesome short and amazing topic!
