XPD winter right now. Everyday XPD any time temps are above 32°F Guess I need to check my cord to see if it has the 0° thermometer built into the cord.
I use a my block heater on 3 hour timer, I think it was 58 degree coolant and was 10 degrees in vernal yesterday, that makes me almost Gaurentee it has a thermostat, where yours was plugged in all night and had roughly the same temps. My lb7 did not have a thermostat and would blow hot air immediately on start up it would also melt snow off the hood, if left plugged in, it had a 1000w block heater and I think I read the lzo is 400w. I like hotshots anti gel due to project farms youtube testing, I used power service for years prior down to -40 with no issues. I wouldn’t run straight #1 in LZO most stations sell 70/30 or rarely I have seen 50/50 blend.
I agree there may be a thermostat in it but I cannot say for sure. What I was referencing was for the internet people that have said over and over that the block plug will not even work if it's not below 0 degrees f. I was trying to find info on what the wattage was for the LZ0 block heater, I wasn't successful. I appreciate your comments on here !
@ thank you for the kind words, I appreciate the time and effort and time you put into these videos and the vast knowledge you share, you hands down own the title of best 3.0 duramax online content!
Look into the badger block heater control. It measures the outside temp does the math backwards and turns on the heater so it's ready at the "ready time" you set it for. It will maintain for the time you set it for 2 hour, 4 or 6. It saves on your utility bill and most energy companies will give you a rebate to cover the purchase price.
Lake Speed recently did a video on diesel fuel additives and showed that OptiLube and Archoil were the best 2 additives in terms of wear scar reduction and cetane improvement. Personally I use ARCHOIL. Also I have used the Archoil diesel fuel system cleaner and my REGENS went from 250-350 miles to over 600 miles the last 5 REGENS and counting. I have the LZ0.
+1 for Archoil. I also noticed my regen intervals were greatly improved in '20 F250. For the price, I think Archoil is one of the best all around options. Optilube is more expensive but good as well based on the reviews and tests I've seen.
Winter diesel is basically a significantly high amount of kerosene with additives. How much may vary depending on where you live. The ac delco fuel additives (according to my local dealers) is discontinued. Top tier diesel is actually somewhat hard to find in my experience. It’s nowhere in Alberta, shell only has top tier gas. Good additives are important in the winter time as winter diesel tends to have less lubricity. The truck shouldn’t need to idle for more than a couple minutes, a diesel needs to run to warm up and idling a cold diesel in temps like I get (-40c) can potentially wax the cylinders. I tested my plug with a power watchdog and it runs as soon as I plug it in at any temperature. But that being said the block heater only needs to be plugged in a couple hours before starting the truck in temps below -20c. However I often don’t plug it in unless the night time temp goes below -30c. A good battery warmer and an oil pan heater also go along way with those bitter cold -40c days.
In winter I use Amsoil all in one and in spring summer I use amsoil cetane boost. As for winter I have not plugged in my block heater as of yet. Winter this year in my part of Canada has been really mild and temps haven’t gone below 0.
Haven't plugged my 3.0 in a single time. I'm in Ohio and we've seen single digits here. I work overnight, so by 5 am my truck is cold soaked. Fires right up without any problems. I am running Archoil, regular or winter forumula depending on the time of year, and a bottle of the cleaner every 5k when I change my oil. Question, have you seen problems with iDash not displaying some readings correctly? My DPF %, time and distance since last regen are not functioning correctly any more. They used to display just fine, but as of a few weeks ago they changed. They display normally for the first 60 seconds after starting up the truck, and then they go blank and display --'s for those settings. The regen status displays OFF when it's not running a regen, but instead of going to ON, it goes to --'s when it's in a regen cycle. I know everything is working normally because I watch every time I start the truck and the values are changing like I expect them too, it's just frustrating that they don't display the entire time I'm driving like they used to.
Here in Michigan, I use Amsoil “all in one” in the winter, and I only plug it in when it goes below 0*f. I haven’t had any issues, but I will say this is the second winter for my 3 L duramax And it has 28000 miles on it and the first 30 seconds of start up in 20* or less, it runs pretty rough. It didn’t do that last year when new. It smooths right out and runs great after.
I plug mine in whenever it's below freezing. If you have the ability, why not? Easier on the truck, hopefully will prolong the life of it. As for additive, Project Farm here on RUclips did a test comparing them. Hotshot Secrets did the best by far in the Every Day additive, along with the best anti-gel additive. That's what I run and I have never gelled up. The ONE time in my life when I gelled up was when I forgot to add it to my tank... After adding it (and replacing the fuel filter), it ran just fine in -20 temps.
Snake oil, mostly. I've had my 2018 L5P for over 5 years. Central IL. I've never used any additives or block heater (actually a recall for it and GM doesn't have a solution, surprise!). I've started it in zero degrees and never had an issue. Was 4 degrees last week. Started and ran fine. So, idk what to tell everyone. I am about to use Archoil products, but to get better fuel mileage and less regens.
Thanks! I really thought that the block heater wouldn’t work until it was lower than 0°F. Do you recommend unplugging the truck before starting it? I did have the coolant fan run on my last winter after using the block heater. I did have the update done at my dealer in December and have plugged in 2 times with no fan on but I dod unplug it first before starting.
Only gas engine has the that internal thermostat. Because if you don’t have the thermostat on the block heater it will throw a DTC code/ check engine light.
I've been wondering that myself as to what the block heater systems are able to do vs that exact comment in the GM owners manual suggesting the block heater will not operate if the ambient temperature is above a certain temp. So here's a question, do you know if there is a diesel version and a gasoline version of the cord or is it all the same part number across the board for all GM pickups ?
Assuming you’re a gm tech from your videos, genuinely asking is it better for longevity to keep it stock with DEF and egr, or get a good tune and delete kit. Because I’m between getting a 2023/24 high country or a ram eco diesel. These seem to have more pep but I’d prefer a deleted truck because reliability a lil more power and because it’s super important (not really) ✨the sound✨.
Appreciate the content. I've been considering the new LZ0 with the max trailering for daily driver plus towing a 6,500lb boat. I currently use a 2016 EcoBoost that does pretty well. Thoughts? I saw your long towing video and it scared me a bit..
Even without max towing you’d be fine. I towed a 6500 pound trailer up to the Eisenhower (west of Denver steep Rocky Mountains) tunnel at 65 miles per hour up a steep grade With my trailboss Lzo without max tow. Now if you don’t want a trailboss or zr2 I would recommend max tow, because some have stated the same or better mileage and liked the drivability better. I average 26-28 hwy 22 town and 11-14 miles per gallon towing 6500 pounds.
Max towing is a great option to have. i wish I could have it with the ZR2! my towing experiences have been great up until that cargo trailer and the def consumption. I plan on doing a lot more towing this year but with a car trailer and not a cargo trailer.
Hey! love the videos. I have a 2022 LM2 and had seen videos before if you have the truck plugged in and remote start the vehicle the fans will all kick on at max setting and remain on. Do you know is this still an issue that i should worry about? I live in st. louis and had to fire my truck up the other night at around 10 degrees and it was not happy. So i might be plugging it in going further. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words ! The fans stuck on high was an early issue and corrected with a reprogram. That being said, if you plug it in, do not remote start it. There are warnings in the owners manual to not have it plugged in with the engine running.
Hot Shot's Secret. Watch Project Farm's videos about it. It performs the best in most if not all tests he conducts. I run their EDT year round but I will also use their EDT+ Winter Defense when it gets below 20 degrees Fahrenheit here in South Dakota. (Also, do you know if they fixed the issue with the LM2 where it would throw a code if you plugged your block heater in above 0 degrees fahrenheit? I saw you commented about the issue with remote starting, but I heard this was an issue too.)
You should checkout Lake Speed’s recent video about additives. He showed that OPTILUBE was the best in terms of wear scar performance and Archoil not far behind. It’s one of the best videos I’ve seen about additives.
I had my 23 Silverado plugged in around -5 overnight, and didn't get around to unplugging it the next day until it hit about 15 degrees. Caused the engine fan to run non stop for the entire day.
@@coreymacqueen4802 block heater use does cause the fan to go nuts. It's a known issue with earlier trucks and there is a software update for it. I had it happen.
@@coreymacqueen4802 Do some research before you sound like a fool. There's a TSB out for the issue I described. Or just take 2 seconds and search Google for what I described, you'll see it all over.
I’m so glad I recently purchased a heavy duty gasser. I don’t tow much but wanted towing capability for my travel trailer. I thought about a diesel, but it seems way too complicated and expensive to maintain or deal with. If I towed a lot, I probably would’ve went with a diesel despite this. Although diesels have a better resale value and should ultimately have better longevity, it seems too much of a damn headache to deal with.
Winterized diesel is NOT pure #1 diesel fuel. "Winterized" diesel fuel is a mixture of #2 and #1 diesel fuel. This mixture can be done at the at the fuel source (refinery, pipeline terminal, etc.) or it is sometimes done when fuel is unloaded into a fuel station storage tank. Pure #1 diesel will usually not gel until temperatures well below 0° F.--often as low as -20° F. or lower. Back before all the diesel emission controls and fuel regs, diesel equipment and vehicles without fuel tank heaters in a place where I lived where temperatures could often go down to -40° F. would use Jet A in those frigid temperatures. That was hard on engines, but they would stay running. Modern diesel fuel treatments, as noted, will solve a lot of gelling issues. Most stations in areas with cold winter temperatures will winterize their fuel using additives and/or adding some #1 diesel to #2 fuel. Most of the gelling issues that I see out on the road occur when drivers with fuel tanks filled in warmer areas drive into frigid conditions without adding an anti-gel additive to their fuel tanks. As for block heaters, I will use one if a diesel vehicle is parked outside in temperatures lower than around 10° F. Even then, I usually just run the block heater on a timer, having it come on about 4 hours before I intend to drive the vehicle. Only in temperatures below -20° F. do I leave the block heater plugged in all night. Finally, ignore all the BS posted about "chill factor" temperatures. The temperature affecting a vehicle engine is the AMBIENT temperature. The only effect that "wind chill" has on an engine is that it will cool to ambient temperature quicker when the wind is blowing. (PS--I've owned and driven diesel vehicles for over 40 years.)
Need to look up some of the comparisons of the diesel fuel additives for anti-gelling and additional lubricity for the injectors and system. Archoil did not do so great in any of those tests one performed by a guy name Lake and expert in lubrication and the other at Project Farm. So far, Hot Shots for Winter use has prevented any fuel gelling....so far...at least down to zero. I'll probably continue with Hot Shots. And no never used the block heater. ruclips.net/video/V_iGOXq7DCM/видео.htmlsi=qszPYiFqfoSEPGvm
A lot of great videos out there and Lake Speed did a great job showing how additives worked at -40 degrees. Honestly, I say all of them didn't do great, but my video was showing what I personally use and at my temperatures. I appreciate your insight and hopefully many others can go watch the plethora of videos on additives, a lot of great info with results all over the place.
@@DemonWorks Including your info. Loved the 0W20 video, made a lot of sense with the tight specs. Agree will the fuel freeze at a lower temp? Most likely but down at -40 probably not. Living where i do, just happy to keep it from freezing or even gelling above 0.
A lot of false info here. Stations do not switch to number one during winter if they have number one it’s a separate pump for it stuff that’s at the regular pump is a blend of number two and one. Number one absolutely 100% does not gel because it does not contain a paraffins that number two does .
@ Unless the pump is labeled number 1 it’s a blend of 2&1 and do some research number one does not gel it contains zero paraffins, which is what gels up in number two diesel
I plug my block heater in when it's below 40°. The truck doesn't need it but having some warm coolant and oil helps the heater watm up faster. I only use antigel if I'm going to be in sub 20° temps all day and night. Regular fuel additives for cp4 lubrication but that's it. Def doesn't exist for me

Diesel #1 is kerosene, which is a very dry fuel (very little lubricity) in comparison to ULSD. Make sure you run something to compensate.
Did you see project farms most recent diesel additive testing?
Did you see repair geek with motor oil geek video of additive testing?
both are great videos!
Lake Speed Jr. is extremely knowledgeable ! I enjoy his videos
XPD is top. by a large margin.
I use archoil additive for oil plus for diesel fuel they are both different additive, they work very well on my 6.7 Ram so far 700k miles
Good stuff.. Thankfully I live south of Houston and won't generally have to deal with this.
I plugged my 2019 in at 13 degrees and got up the next morning I had nothing warm lol
Go tell that to Lake Speed Jr.
Hey I have an engine oil analysis I would like your 2cents on
Send it over to mstrgoodwrench@gmail.com
Will Diesel #1 create problems for the emissions system?
Nope! You’re good to go!
Thanks! Very informative!
My 24 GMC started at -36C. I tried just so I know when ice fishing and cold.
awesome !
I’ve been using it below 25.
Hey! love the videos.
@@DemonWorks I don't run GM, but what would be the issue with remote start with the block heater plugged in?
@@DemonWorks Thank you for responding to this, I had the same question but this answered it for me!
Archoil over hotshots because of the long filler neck instead of dealing with the funnel that shoots out and makes a mess
Right ?!?! I appreciate the easy to pour in bottles.
Anybody else notice that the owner's manual warns against using the block heater in the garage?
Yes, risk of fire.
I was using Archoil, just bought some Opti-Lube XPD to try on my next fill. Have you used/heard of Opti-Lube and what are your thoughts.
No it didn’t… there’s no way that one caused the other.
Go to your dealer. There's a software glitch that causes that, and they have an update that will fix it where the fan will never run like that again.
17° fahrenheit 3.39 amps... this morning
Great info, thanks.

Plug it in and I run hot shots
A lot of false info here. Stations do not switch to number one during winter if they have number one it’s a separate pump for it stuff that’s at the regular pump is a blend of number two and one.
Number one absolutely 100% does not gel because it does not contain a paraffins that number two does .
In my area, they don’t segregate pumps like you claim. #1 does gel. Facts were shown. Sorry the video hurt you 😆
@ Unless the pump is labeled number 1 it’s a blend of 2&1 and do some research number one does not gel it contains zero paraffins, which is what gels up in number two diesel
@@edmundleviste3239thank you
I plug my block heater in when it's below 40°. The truck doesn't need it but having some warm coolant and oil helps the heater watm up faster.
I only use antigel if I'm going to be in sub 20° temps all day and night. Regular fuel additives for cp4 lubrication but that's it. Def doesn't exist for me
Dude clean the hood off your dads truck! SHOW SOME RESPECT!
I agree
Thanks for watching !
@@DemonWorkshey I’ve got the same engine in my truck, installed an s&b air intake a few months ago no issues and then recently I started noticing this subtle sound at idle, checked for air leaks and everything is tight, and I also put a new filter in but that didn’t change anything, anyway thought you might know something
It’s like a pulsing sound coming from the air box every 3 ish seconds like a low rhythmic humming…I’ve got a vid but not sure how to send it, but it’s for sure coming down the pipe from the turbo
Thanks !
Winter fuel was a must my tanks and filter gelled up and wouldn't start
Ya I use winter fuel but have never added anything myself to the tank
