It’s so hard to find modest tops and dresses right now, everything is cropped, backless, strapless, bra-style, has cutouts or bra-unfriendly spaghetti straps, it’s not my best year for summer shopping. Linen shirts, skirts, pants and normal dresses to the rescue!

  • @heartquaked

I have always dressed modestly. Thank you for this! It’s so hard to find fashionable clothing that isn’t cropped, doesn’t have spaghetti straps, etc. I’m not afraid to shop in the older women’s sections of stores… lol. My grandma has always been my style icon and she was always modest.

The rayon/viscose/lyocell/modal fabric family is greatly undervalued, it’s so cool and breathable that it’s used to make athletic clothes that actually cool the body down. It also has many silk-like qualities, like soft hand and drape, resiliency and wrinkle resistance. I love it woven on its own, knitted alone or with a little elastane, and blended with cotton, linen, silk, and even wools. It’s not a synthetic, which are made from plastic, it’s made entirely from natural plant fibers like wood and bamboo. Very cheap viscose can, like other fabrics, be limp or shrink, higher quality and greater thickness are definitely worth it in any fabric.

One actually stays cooler outdoors in long pants and sleeves in light-colored cotton or linen clothing than with bare skin, which soaks up the sun’s heat. Dark linen dresses or separates are great for after sundown.

I got a white linen scarf from H&M recently that is perfect to add modesty or sun protection without overheating. Sometimes I just use it to protect my décolletage from too much sun, even with sunscreen, this is usually the oldest-looking part of the body as we age. It’s very lightweight, too, for travel in conservative countries. Most women my age have really leathery, wrinkly, spotty chest skin because they were sun worshippers when young. This is preventable.

Thank you *so much* for doing a modest summer capsule wardrobe with no short layers! It’s often so discouraging when all the summer clothes depicted are incredibly short, which is not helpful if you have modesty code / values, or a professional dress code, or are a mom trying to keep up with little ones without having a wardrobe malfunction! I have had my share of oopsies that I do not want to repeat. It’s so stressful to constantly be pulling at hemlines and checking yourself while wrangling kids.
I hadn’t thought about modesty for traveling but you are totally right about the Middle East! 💗
I really love rayon/viscose/ modal for the summer, because I find linen harder to care for (ironing/steaming) so I reach for it less, and rayon has become my best friend in summer. 💖

I'm not necessarily concerned about modesty beyond being office appropriate, but this capsule is definitely giving me some ideas. I do need to get a few new pieces for when my remote work ends, but in my office the air is either super hot or super cold inside and there is a huge benefit to having clothes that can withstand both. In particular, I'm really getting to be a fan of linen clothing.

    • @vazq_Fernanda

I hear you, I wouldn't describe my style as 'modest' either, and I have trouble with the word, but I wasn't sure how to describe it otherwise. But like I said, I am having trouble dressing not showing my shoulders, I never realized how much I like to have them bare!
I love linen, partially because i's ok if it's a little wrinkled. 😅 I like getting a pass!

I do not dress modestly much of the time, but I do work in a somewhat conservative field (education) and often travel to places where women show a lot less skin than I. I am very mindful of how appropriate my clothes are anywhere I go. One of my favorite items to have, especially when I travel: really large silk-like scarves. I use them to cover my hair, shoulders, and/or legs as needed. I liked this video, Fernanda, it shows one can look both "current" and "lively" even when not showing every inch of one's body.

@@vazq_Fernanda No, I'm not traveling just yet, mostly for the sake of others. I'm fully vaccinated, but since I'm back to working in person and interacting with hundreds of people a day, I want to limit my fellow human beings from any chance that I might've picked up the virus and unwittingly transmit it to someone who's not had the shot. I partook in a "non-essential" activity for the first time yesterday, after refraining from such things for 15 months! I dress modestly as a part of my faith. I am Apostolic Pentecostal, and only wear skirts and dresses, no jewelry or makeup either.
Add in crutches, extreme hiking, 5”3/160cm, and petite, but with blessed parts it can be so hard to get dressed, but I have some tricks. 😆🙌💪🏻 (Yes I am the neighborhoods tiny mascot, everyone knows who the one with the crutches and skirt that walks and walks 😆 I have a child diagnosis in my hip, and have had a total hip replacement for 2,5 years ago, and it didn’t go well, but I love walks so I make the best of it. Just explaining because I easily gets questions and me and my crutches are doing well together, 5 years in 🥰)
I will stop babbling and share my tips 😆🙈
I love a good A line flowy skirt, but the wind loves it too 😆 I always wear a hair elastic on my wrist. If the wind is nuts, I take the extra fabric and put the elastic around. It looks a little like a knot, and that has been in fashion for some season ago, but I have done this for years. I also wear a slip, that help with not clingy fabric. Using a little fabric softener with water in a spray bottle can also help with the clingy situation.
Since I am petite I buy higher tank tops at the kid section at H&M, I know others buy at the mens apartment, and other again that uses it backwards so it is lower in the back. Many tops today have lower backs, so that don’t solve the problem for me though, and I like a higher back too.
I do use a good bra, that is a priority, and I love a light pink/nude color tank under more lighter fabric and a dark for “lining” under darker fabrics. I do wear some more sheer fabrics now after I found my tricks with the right color “lining” for different color tops. I have two that cover most of my tops, one black and one light pink. When you don’t see the lining and the contrast with skin/clothing I feel more covered. I don’t wear total see trough, just some more sheer/lighter weight once’s.
Buy the summer clothes in others seasons. I want mid calf, long sleeves, no cleavage, no backless, not clingy, but not a potato bag either, and finding that in tropical summer can be hard. Just look at the fabric and colors. Also buy the leggings in other seasons. Last summer there was 3 months with only 2 2pk leggings to find at 3 different stores if H&M’s, none online either. It was either to tick, or with feets/socks.
Biker shorts can help with both modesty, clingingnest, and not getting your tights rubbing against each other. With the trend of more miniskirts I find these very accessible in different fabrics, much more then the leggings..
A light weight fall/spring scarf can be used as a jacket for colder evenings. Even a poncho for those that like that. I find it sometimes hard to find the right jackets. I do have the rain gear and for wind, winter, and more dressier, but when I need something between, a large scarf is my go to. Nice to wrap around your shoulders.
A stitch or two, or a safety pin can help with all from to much cleavage for your comfort, fixing a slit, and so much more 🥰
Last one, if you don’t want to use a hair tie for the flowey skirts, a longer jacket or cardigan can help with holding it down. I have a trench coat for that. It’s easy to look a little frumpy, but it can be pulled of 😊
    Thank you again 😊
    Love from Johanne, Norway 🇳🇴

Do you have a dress code at work or at school? I have never had one at work, but I do have an interview this week and I realized that I don't own any clothes that properly cover my shoulders that I could wear to it. 😬 Funny how this video lined up with my life!

Well done 👌🏻 I love your colorful examples 😊 For the people who struggle with mixing patterns: choose only tops with patterns or bottoms with patterns and solid shoes, accessories and jackets. It could be easier to mix and match 🤗

I appreciate this as someone recently diagnosed with Lipedema who has to wear medical compression leggings year round. I live in AZ and it gets hot so I have been worrying about how I'm going to look nice without overheating and still covering these unattractive leggings.

I had to wear compression stockings a few years ago, and wore mostly maxi skirts or coulottes or wide linen trousers

🙋🏻‍♀️I don’t like shaving my legs. But I’m also married and have a mom-bod. 😅 (Diastasis recti makes people ask if I’m pregnant when I’m not, I’ve had it since I had my 2nd child who is now 8, so I like to wear flowy clothing that hides my mid section.)

Apart from any other reason, it just feels nice , specially in the summer, to have a long skirt swishing round and also to know that nothing shows that one would rather not flaunt . More exposed flesh certainly does not mean more sexy or any cooler - just the opposite in my opinion.

I agree that more skin does not equal sexier, but I don't necessarily feel that being completely covered is always sexier either. I think it's more about attitude, but also, FIT!

Was not impressed with this one. But think I need a boho white dress! Just didn’t like the pastels I guess and the shoes with anything other than the pink pants. Hated the linen print shirt.. I really liked some of the other ones you have done colorwise

Wonderful, at age 61, I don’t want to show much leg above the knees, just an inch or two, but mostly I wear midis and Bermudas. I have great legs, they look exactly as they did 40 years ago, a genetic characteristic, but I don’t think mini-skirts or short-shorts are appropriate for my age. They look a little sad, like the wearers are really desperate to look younger. Dressing like a teenager at this age doesn’t fool anyone, it just looks pathetic. At home, anything goes, of course, and bathing suits excepted, too, not that I ever wear mine, I’m not a water or sun loving person. Modesty is not just for religious reasons, I’ve been a modest dresser all my life, just from personal preference. My super-sexy body attracted too much unwanted attention until about age 45-50 as it was, the last thing I wanted was to tart myself up!

Totally agree. Especially if you are 5'9 and curvy with a bigger butt. I don't like to be leered at in public and if I dress form fitting it feels like I am inviting it no matter what. People assume that you want the attention if you dress a certain way, let's be honest.

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  3 года назад +1

It's true! I don't want to say that you may want to cover up because of age, because I don't believe that we HAVE to cover up as we age, but it's definitely a good reason to do it! Whatever makes people comfortable!
