- The Ferrari FF and Bentley Continental V8 are put through their paces at a unique test track on the edge of the Arctic Circle. The Stig then arrives on a hovercraft to do a timed lap on an inch perfect recreation of Silverstone - on ice!

Or it is because the car has a special 4wd system that dis-engages in 5th gear
MATS Channel it actually has such a drive system, he even says something along the lines of the car going into rear weel drive at 5th gear to stig

3 years later I have to add this: It is said that before this program was recorded Bentley contacted a Swedish expert in studded tires, whom have been providing rally cars with studded tires for centuries. So he created 3 custom sets of tires for the bentley. Ferrari brought their own tires, probably stock tires from a large manufacturer...
When you live in Canada you know that only a few people know that winter tires make a world of a difference but most think that "All Season" tires are meant for harsh and snowy Canadian winters. Result, everyone drive like snails or are in the ditch.

Those up close shots in the first 30 seconds were blissful.
For those who wonders, the Bentley uses a swedish special winter tyre called Lappi, which comes with 410-770 studs depending on size. The studs are off course glued and studded by a man who built wrc rally tires in the 90's, also called Lappi. And as Clarkson says. The bentley won because of better studded tyres...

So many people are impressed by Italian design, however, in my opinion, British cars aren't far behind! I even think British cars sometimes beat Italians in terms of design.

I'll take the Ferrari FF. Been around a track in one and it was fast, really fast. I thought the BMW V10 M6 I drove was fast, or the new BMW V8TT, but that V12 just makes it special.

Both cars are not designed to be driven on snow, they are not safe on snow/ice.

i was able to get the audio of this and i decided to make the "You hateful imbecile" part my new ringtone. then while i was in the library, i forgot to silent my phone then a classmate suddenly hit me and then my phone rang shouting "You hateful imbecile" we got kicked out of the library coz they thought we were fighting.
That was 100% the sound of a Space Shuttle in the beginning.
I love the fact that Clarkson ended up using a Range Rover, just like how they ended up choosing the Beetle in that Botswana Special.

I'd like to see TopGear put that Range Rover up against a '13/'14 F150 Raptor.
Bentley uses swedish studded winter tyres "Lappi". Ferrari unknown but probably Michelin, Nokian or Continentals studded.
Probably Led-lights, they blink many times pr seconds, impossible to see with the naked eye, but with a camera you might record several frames when the lights is "off"
I want to take my car on that track with snow, looks like alot of fun even with a fwd sedan .

Ferrari did not build their 4RM for people to actually use it in the snow. Its just so that they can tell people "Looka here, if it iz a bit e difficult in de winter, you can now perrform a hill start with no tow trucke". Thats all, it just needs to be able to set off from a hotel parking lot in Switzerland in winter, finished.

I love the Bentley Continental GT V8 out of the two it's my favourite and it's prettier than the Ferrari and more simpler and that deep throated 4.0 liter twin turbo 500hp V8

Ferrari FF has a special 4wd system that uses something similar to what we call a front PTO on tractors, and it disengages in 5th gear, it's only active in 1st to 4th gear plus reverse. So Clarkson wasn't trying to be funny but you still laughed, now THATS funny, you made a complete fool of yourself.

Here in Canada, it is. I don't know about elsewhere in the world. Bentley does hold the land speed on ice world record for street legal cars, do not forget that.

Yeah the general term given to cars like the FF are 'Shooting Brake' (A 2 door wagon variant with supersports underpinnings).
