I've never owned a reptile and don't really ever plan to but I have heard that the shedding process can be very stressful and or painful for them and unless they are ACTUALLY struggling to get it to shed on their own, don't peel it! Again I've only heard this from other reptile owners so I'm not sure is its true but at least be gentle with them.
It is only painful if it is premature, or if there is a medical issue if your reptile isn't producing enough lymphatic fluid during the shedding process. It actually shouldn't be painful and if it is that person should stop immediately. Discomfort around eye caps is reasonable, shedding is a very vulnerable time and I would hate to have some big weird creature with wiggley worms on either side of there torso trying to touch my eye ball when I can't see shit but my shedding fluid.
It is generally advised not to pull on shed. Soaking them can help the shed come loose (on beardies ) is what I’m most versed in I’ve had one for almost 4 years now. In certain cases you may have to help them get it started or if you stuck shed to help them remove it as it can cause infection among other problems. Not to mention it must be extremely uncomfortable for them. I have had to only help my Toothless with stuck shed a handful of times mostly nose and ear plugs.
Reptiles do not need help shedding. It can cause harm to the new scales underneath. Yes, it maybe irritating for the reptile while shedding but it's better than an infection or damage
