In NC I let my mums bloom in the summer and fall. After it blooms in June/July just dead head the flowers and it will bloom again in October. It’s a plus to enjoy the blooms twice instead of just in the fall
I got a mum in July for my Anniversary and after it died I deadhead the plant and repotted it and hoping it will rebloom for me this Fall. I have been giving it Miracle Gro when I water. I do keep it in a pot and inside like a house plant because of how I live I don't get to garden any more with my health. I do hope it's possible to get it to bloom while living inside?
I have let my mums get to 18 inches or higher!! Full of buds I’m hoping they bloom and stay for a while. I was thinking of getting some netting so they do not split. They will be beautiful. But I do wish I would have cut back in may.
Hi Micheleratliff, I wish I had pinched mine back a little more than I didn't this year too. Some of mine have started to bloom already, Next year Ill cut them back further on Mothers Day wend. and then again a little 4th of July wend. I guess I didn't trim them back enough in May. Ive never tried a net to keep them from splitting but that's a great idea. Ill have to try it.
I have some that are in pots and they started growing back. It’s mid April and one of them are starting to bloom already. I’m in MS. Our weather has been crazy. If I let them bloom then dead head them will they still bloom again?
Hi there!! I usually pluck the dried/spent flowers off the plant in hopes new flowers will still bloom. The rabbits at my house have been doing a good job of eating my pretty blooms. You can often see new little buds growing down inside the plant. Once the plant dies in the winter I cut it back to the ground. That’s usually after Jan. It won’t take long & you’ll see new green growth starting to come up.
