Outstanding review Maarten, very thorough and informative - it’s clearly evident that a lot of work and effort went into this. Looking forward to more A7III reviews. Subscribed.
Thank you for your kind words, and your interest. The full review is next week's post - then I had to return it, but am hoping to get it back soon to do some comparisons.
Wow! "Neutral" creative style (I compared it on my TV vs. "standard" -> I never thought I would like "neutral". But I do. "standard" is too saturated.), manual white balance and shutter release button to start recording. It makes such a difference... I will have to try the options from the "pro" section in the second half of the video... Ach... To discover "small" things like these makes me smile :-)
Really great Video Maarten as usual. Also the quality of the video looks great, that A7III is really shining through. Im very glad to be an owner of one as well. Hopefully we will see more A7III videos from you? All the best.
Maarten Heilbron I valued this video a lot. I went and shared/posted your video link into the sony a7iii group on Facebook. facebook.com/groups/A7III/ You should join if your into that sort of thing. Would be cool to have someone like yourself in there. Quick personal question: you seem to be a very natural instructor and have classic videographer presentations. The Distillery District is immediately recognized even from being there just once or twice. There are a lot of unique photo ops throughout there. I shoot at a gallery there, possibly 3 times a year on average and take breaks to find images for myself while strolling the lanes. As of May I will relying on an A7III added to the stable of work horses.
Hi Maarten! I'm just revisiting this video (I do that a lot with your videos... they're so densely packed with good stuff). I hope to run into you again roaming about, once the weather warms up.
This is one of the most informational videos I've seen on RUclips- while lacking the pizazz of more popular channels / RUclipsrs, the explanations are informative yet brief. Excellent video 👍 P.S. You obviously know your way around a camera which is evident in your presentation / tone.
Very helpful and conscice video. Thank you Maarten. I've been using Canon, but recently had to wrap my head around a Sony and this was a perfect introduction.
Thank you Maarten! Just received my A73 this morning, after pulling my hair out I decided to see what is available on youtube. Aha found this video. Thank you again.
Thanks Maarten, great video and very clear, really a great starting point before checking any of the hyperedited and totally dispersive "tutorials" many other channels offer. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Right, me either. But we may be showing our age ... I tried to find a balance with "Hey photographers ..." But honestly, I prefer to just jump in. I introduce myself with a lower third and to the extent it's possible try to keep my focus (sorry) on the camera I'm reviewing instead of myself.
Hi, you Know how set Gain 0 for video? If you see the low Lights clips recorded from Sony A7III in Sony Catalyst the information of camera master gain adjustment set gain from +9 Db to +33Db with much noise in dark sites.
Maarten! You've been a very busy guy! I have to play some serious "catch-up" with your videos. I hope you're doing well! This was fantastic (as usual).
Truly enjoy your videos, reviews, tips, tricks! So glad I found your channel. I am in the market for a mirrorless that I can use for video 4k with image stab. I value your reviews and and will decide soon!
@@MaartenHeilbron sure. Thanks for ur reply! ...let me watch all ur video , make sure what might not covered yet. Hope u don't mind teach beginner like us 😬
Hi, Maarten, greetings from Germany, great video as always, looking forward to seeing the full review. And also if you think it is worth upgrading from the A7M2?
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. Grüße aus Toronto, und bitte grüße alle meine Freunde in Deutschland. The full review is next week's post. Yes, although I would not usually recommend upgrading that quickly, in this case, I would.
24p 100MB gives 6K downsampling to 4K video as it uses the entire senor. 30p gives 5K downsampled to 4k and is therefore slightly cropped.. So 24 100MB is the best quality on the a7iii so long as you are happy with the cinema style effect that it also gives due to lower fps.
Well, yes, but the tradeoff for 24 fps, as nearly all displays are 30 fps means that 6 frames are being interpolated every second. I'd go with the 30 fps. I don't feel that downsampling from 6 or 5K makes much of a difference. In fact, if there was an option that used a pure 4K area of the sensor, with no down sampling and pure 1:1 that would be my preference.
Your advice is most welcome to a beginner of slow-motion here. So the S&Q works well but only 16mbs as you say. If I go to standard settings and change to 100fps at 100mbs and shoot at shutter 200. When looking back at the footage in the camera it plays at normal speed. So in post to slow it down when I select a new project in Final Cut Pro it doesn’t allow me to select a frame rate of 100fps only a max of 60fps as a new project. So do I just open a normal Pal project of 25fps and then import the 100 fps footage and then speed ramp it down in post to the desired slow motion speed?
Correct, you set the final cut project frame rate to the playback speed. I'd suggest 30fps, and then use the speed tool to slow the playback to the desired effect.
Hellow Maarten, that was a very wonderful and depth explanation. I haven’t yet bought Sony alpha 7 iii but I soon should get one. Should I go for any other camera if I am a first timer?
Great video as always, Maarten. I did watch the video a couple of times on the video settings, too technical but still understandable. I have accidentially found that when I set to shoot only RAW in the camera, I still be able to transfer photos to the phone via Playmemories mobile, and the photos become JPG in the phone. It acts like a RAW conversion to me, so I think RAW conversion in camera is not neccessary. What do you think?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for the tip, I'll have to remember that next time I complain about this. Typically though, the RAW conversion tool in other cameras has features like white balance adjustment and highlight/shadow adjustment, which would also be nice to have.
Always happy to help. Sony made things on as complicated as needed to make it powerful enough to serve the many videographers who have a clear vision of what they need a camera to do.
Maarten hello and thank you very much for the explanation. Please, can you clear for me which slow mo you prefer? The one you showed that needs to slow down in post production or the other one, the seven mins one with no audio. Please forgive me for my stupid question. I have the camera but completely clueless about it. And if you will ever answer me, can you please advice me on which settings I should shoot footage that has to be in normal speed and in slow mo as well. As I not always know in advance which part of the clip I will slow down in post production and which I will need in the normal 24-30 frames. 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the great video! Just had a few questions.. ~ You mention you shoot with all settings "manual," but do you still shoot video in the "video" mode? Or switch to the "manual" mode? ~ You mention that while one can film in any mode, Video mode will display the video aspect ratio? Does this mean if I shoot movies in another mode the aspect ratio will be different? ~If I select a "creative style" option or "picture profile" are these baked in to what I shoot? or only for reference while shooting? ~ You mention you would do a rack focus with the "touch" option, but how do you do this if in "manual focus"? Is there a way to quickly toggle between AF and MF? ~ If I understand correctly, it seems option 1 you mention (switch to HD and go to 120 frame mode) is a better option for shooting slow motion as it retains audio and records at a higher mbs than the S&Q mode slow motion options ~ So what's the point of using S&Q mode? Just for fast motion shooting like time lapse? Apologies for the many questions! Thank you for such a helpful video as I learn this camera :)
Video mode with the video exposure mode set to manual (as demonstrated in the video). The video aspect is 16x9, so if you're in a different mode it switches from the stills aspect to the video aspect as you press the button. This takes time and means you don't see the correct composition before recording. In video everything is baked in - there is no RAW mode for video. If you intend to do colour correction or adjustment later, you will be modifying the settings that you recorded. Sony lenses (with the exception of the cinema lens) don't have an accurate ability to hit a focus point manually, so doing a manual rack focus will be very hit and miss and frustrating.
quick question. i am looking at this camera for vlogging and video work. which small lens would you suggest, for my nikon i would use something like a 24-35 prime. i dont know what sony options there are. vlogging and night timelapse is my focus.
great presentation, calm, precise and easy to follow..can I ask some questions. 1) I'm in Europe and have been shooting a feature with a canon in 24p. I plan to shoot with the Sony A73 and place those clips into the Canon 24p timeline including 120 fps. Do I also need to continue shooting in 24p? 2) Do I have to convert the 120fps clips to 24p for slow motion in post, Im using FCPX? 3).Will there be a problem with the finished project with the different cameras used when exporting? Many thanks.
Thanks, I do appreciate the kind words. 1) The frame rate of your final production should govern the frame rate of your recordings. If you need to capture a high speed event (to slow it down in post) then use 120 frames. 2) If you want slow motion, and you shot using the regular video mode at 120 frames, you can use FCP to slow 120 frame footage down to 20% without requiring interpolated frames. If you used S&Q, you don't.
thank you for replying..so on the Sony A73 you can film slow motion 120fps in regular video mode then slow down in FCP or with S&Q..Are there differences in quality of the slow mo between the 2 types ...why would someone use one over the other? thanks @@MaartenHeilbron
Always happy to help. Yes, either is possible. If you want to retrieve the effect in camera (without editing) use S&Q. If you are prepared to edit, and potentially want some audio recording, use 120.
Hi there I’m from the future Lol. I just got my a73 last week and am in the middle of the learning curve. I’ve been shooting video with Panasonic cameras for the last three years. Gh4, gh5, and gh5s. Finally made the jump to full frame! I’m trying to find an in depth video explaining what the picture profile in depth settings do to the scene. I’m used to vlog l on Panasonic and know the basics of grading, but so y has so many more options to change! Anyways, have you made a more advanced video on the pictures profiles, or do you know of another good source I could learn from? Thanks for your videos!
I knew they would invent time travel! There's this: ruclips.net/video/1P8pIKYBmP0/видео.html and this ruclips.net/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/видео.html. I'm not familiar with Vlog, so really can't comment on the difference (Panasonic has never been willing to lend me a camera with the "upgrade"). But here's the thing about Slog. Don't use it unless you have to. Between the higher ISO and the 8 bit recording, compressing the available 8-9 stop range of REC709 into 5-6 stops to give you more room for the 11-12 stops that SLog2 or Slog3 provides, with their higher noise floor, is just not a good quality decision - unless you really need the dynamic range (bright sun scene, talent in shade). If you tone down the colour in camera, you will have a heck of a time recovering it in post, as it's just not there to recover. Create the look you want in camera as much as possible, make minor adjustments in post as needed - as now you can reference a waveform and vectorscope. But the more you try to modify the 8 bit coming from a A7 III, the worse it will look. Hope this helps,
This is perhaps a stupid question, but when you turn the dial from video back to M for photography does the custom buttons jump back to my photo settings?
There are no stupid questions - please always ask if you don't know or can't figure it out. The answer is "Yes", the custom buttons change to the appropriate settings in the appropriate mode.
A lot to take in, I'll be watching this a few times for sure, thanks for all the work. I have this camera on order and am looking forward to using it. I am disappointed though that Sony chose not to include built in ND filters as they have on my Sony dedicated video cameras or as Panasonic have on my Lumix FZ 2500. Will you be doing an update on your video on the a7ii for the a7 iii using Canon L glass? I have ordered the Metabones V. I am hoping my L lenses perform well with that.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Typically cameras with interchangeable lenses don't have built-in ND. Thanks for the request, not sure that's worth doing - but I'll add it to the "topics to think about" list.
There are lots of ND filter solutions available from single filters to kits that mount a filter holder and can be more easily adapted to a variety of lens filter diameters.
Although most people use the 180 rule to set the shutter speed (which amounts to 1/2 the frame rate) - all settings that produce the result you prefer are acceptable.
Hello sir.. Greetings for the day!! I want one suggestion as i am going to buy sony a7iii and I'm confused in lens which one to buy from these two: tamron 28-75 f2.8 or sony 24-105 f4 as my first lens.. This is my first camera and first lens. Please guide. 😊
That depends on what you're trying to accomplish - although I have no experience with either of these two, the Tamron will be better in low light, while the Sony will be able to zoom further.
This was an excellent video, Maarten. You covered a lot of information in a very compelling 20 minute video. I had my A7iii in hand as I watched it, pausing frequently to adjust my camera's settings. I was wondering if you had any additional insights into shooting spotlit performers on stage. I'm guessing I need to set the metering mode to highlight and some sort of spot metering to make sure the subjects on stage aren't over exposed. (I shot a band in a theater tonight and, while I was careful to try not to "blow out" the faces of the performers, they still look a little hot for my liking. It's always challenging (to a videographer and his camera!) to properly expose a bright person on a dark stage, especially when you're working from some distant. Care to share any insights? Thanks in advance!
What a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks. I'd go past the "novice" settings in the beginning and move along to advanced for this. Use manual exposure (for aperture (F4), shutter (1/60) and ISO, and use your eye to determine the correct exposure for the performers while adjusting ISO. The zebra, set at 70 (for performers with "white" skin, a little lower for darker skin tones) will help, but your eye is the best judge. An external monitor that gives you a better view might also be useful. Hope this helps.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for your prompt and kind reply. I look forward to giving your suggestions a try on my next concert shoot...and look forward to learning more from your thoughtfully created and information rich videos here on RUclips. All the best! And thanks again!
Excellent video as always. I need some real help. I have had a Rebel XT for some time now and looking to upgrade. I’m impressed with the a6500, but like the all-in-one versatility of the RX10 IV. Any recommendations for a budding photographer??
While the RX100 iv does offer a great deal of functionality, you will find the A6500 to be the more versatile for video. But first, what features are you missing from the Rebel that you feel you need to upgrade?
Was a consideration, until I saw the price tag. My trip to Alaska is only a few months away (hence the upgrade) and I rather not blow the entire budget on a camera. Thank you for the responses!
1) whats the best setting (ok i know subjective) for post processing? 2) whats the best setting (ok i know subjective) for NON post processing (all contrasty and colory)?
1) As neutral possible, which likely means using the flat or neutral profile. Note that for even a minimal amount of processing, the 100Mbit data rate along with the 8 bit recording leaves very little leeway. If you are planning to colour grade, best to record externally. 2) The settings that provide the image you prefer.
BTW - if you use 4K in 30p mode - you will get a 1.2x crop on the sensor. Where if you use 24p with 100m, you will get no crop and a full sensor read out.
Maarten Heilbron quality wise it doesn’t matter. It’s only that the image one can capture is a bit more narrow than using the 24p setting since the sensors resolution is much higher than needed for the 4K, it wouldn’t affect the quality of each individual frame. Btw - sorry for any spelling or grammar mistake, I’m not a native speaker.
Good afternoon! I believe that my question has already been asked before, however, I could not find the proper answer. I have previously successfully connected a sony a7 iii camera to a dji rsc2 stabilizer via type c cable, and all functions worked despite frequent problems when using such a connection. After a short break, I reconnected the camera to the stabilizer, but neither autofocus, nor optical zoom, nor manual focus control from the stabilizer worked anymore. Most likely, I played with the settings and changed something, but now I can’t get everything back. Please help me with any advice
I have none, and do run into similar issues with all kinds of connections under all kinds of circumstances. If there was some easy solution I'd share, but I just keep trying and adjusting until it works. Often that requires re-initializing the camera and/or the gimbal, but patience and persistence is likely the best guidance.
I’m seeing a lot of videographers shooting the 16mm 1.4 on a full frame Sony. I’m unsure why. There is image quality loss when filming in super 35 correct?
Not necessarily ... even at 4K, only 8Mb of resolution is needed, which is within the 10Mb of the APS-C/Super35mm area. The difference (compared to a full frame lens, where the image area is downsampled to 4K is imperceptible to most.
I'm wondering why they don't just get the Batis 25mm. The Sigma 16mm is a terrific lens, but it's heavier and is designed for APS-C of course, but that could also be why they're using it--in case they have or plan to also get an A6xxx as a B-roll backup? Or maybe it just comes down to the price. As Maarten explains above, you probably won't take too much of an IQ hit and the lens is significantly cheaper than the Batis.
I'm not sure that's right. The same amount of light falls on the sensor, regardless of the crop, and the pixels are equally sensitive regardless of the crop - or am I missing something?
thank you so much for this amazing video. learned a lot. I still didnt understand, if one pushes in APS-C Super 35mm mode while filming in 4k, is the 4k lost? what's happening to the 4k footage? is the quality lost? Thank you
That's very kind of you to say, appreciated. With either setting, the resulting footage is still recorded in 4K. What this setting changes is the amount of the sensor used to capture the image. The APS-C area is smaller and as a result, it looks as if you've zoomed in about 50%. The size and resolution of this sensor means that even for 4K (with its 8Mp resolution) isn't compromised even with the APS-C crop.
@@MaartenHeilbron thx for your reply. It's clear now. after watching many videos online, I still couldn't find one picture profile for low light situations with little noise. do you have any suggestions on how to set up my A7III for filming theatre performance? I'm currently using Gamma - Cine 3 and Color Mode Pro. Everything else on 0. it would be of much help. Thank you very much
I'd say that sounds about right - I'd pick Cine3 or 4. Might turn down the detail and saturation slightly to reduce the noise. Also, keep skin tones down so that they're at 70% zebra (assuming white skin). That too will help, as the ISO will be lower.
How do you record the video with Sony's internal system info and all these settings especially all of your operating switching between menus? It looks very cool!
Thanks for the kind words. I record the menus directly using the HDMI output, recorded to an Atomos Shogun recorder. More details here: ruclips.net/video/1Rqvdn4koaM/видео.html
Is it possible to reduce the time of exposure instead of buying ND filter? Is there some reason why you can't go down 1/160 of a second? I think 1/320 will let less light in... Thank you.
I have the sony a7 3 and a sony 28mm F2 , and not sure if the lens is supposed to click when you put the sony lens on?....It will not click and I am getting a lens warning that it is not on correctly, but I can only turn it so much before its too tight, but no click. Also, when I turn on the a7 3, the camera has a small jolt to it and when I pick it up from the desk, it also has the same small jolt, is it supposed to do this!??
Because nearly all viewers of my content will be watching on screens that refresh at 30 frames or a multiple. Only cinema projectors use a 24 frame refresh. More detail here: ruclips.net/video/z1rdjGLmsd8/видео.html
It's always OK - just remember, it's not a magic fourth exposure setting. Depending on your other settings, it will make adjustments to the shutter speed, aperture or ISO. So if the exposure mode is manual, the only setting EV can adjust is ISO - so it's just as easy to adjust the ISO.
I'm still having trouble with autofocus. The touchscreen ability doesn't register for focusing on an object and the autofocus is almost non-existent as I hold down the shutter button. Basically having to do manuel focus for video. I'm sure 90% of the focusing problems I'm having is user-error but I can't seem to find how to fix it :/
Yeah, I apologize. I meant to add that one there. Any recommendations on settings now that I'll have to shoot manual for a bit? Shooting mainly football. Thanks & love your work!

@@MaartenHeilbron I did have a few question and Ill list them off later this week if that is ok with you. I am still trying to fallow along with your video and making my own, In two weeks we are videoing a band with this cam and the A7s2 and trying to get a feel for what works. Thank you for all your videos and for you.
2 questions and I think I have it all, what aspect ratio is good for music video or just a guide to what u think would look best for the concert. And last why do you turn off steady shot ? Just asking I have it on all the time and wanted to know the difference when it’s on a tripod. Thank you and love the videos. All great info. Keep them going
@@robbyy8709 Two answers - I'd probably just shoot at 16x9 as that provides greater flexibility - you might want to letterbox in post to give a more cinematic wide screen feel, but it's a creative choice. On a tripod, steady shot isn't nearly as steady as the tripod, and introduces a crop. There's also the problem that as you start a slow and easy pan the camera tries to hold the shot and then jumps as it realizes that you've exceeded the steady shot boundary. Hope this helps, and thanks for your kind words.
Thank you, Maarten, this video was very helpful. Every time I use or format a new card for video, the video file number starts over again at C000001.mp4. How can I get it to continue sequentially, so that I don’t start with #1 for every card? Thanks!
Thanks for your kind words. How I wish I could give you a solution for this issue that plagues me too. Sadly, there’s no method to have video files consecutively numbered, as with image files.
Maarten Heilbron, well that is the first major glitch I have run into! So how do you handle that when you are using multiple cards for a project? Do you rename the files, and if so how? The problem arises when I have to delink the media to a project, and it is almost impossible to determine which card I need to link the data back to. Do you have a good workaround? Thank you for taking the time to respond. I now have a few new settings to check out for video!
Right. I don't have a solution. In my work I don't use proxy files, so no need to relink. I realize that is not a solution for many editors. My process is to create dated folders with sub folders for each camera, project or location and transfer the entire "private" folder from the card to a storage drive and import to the NLE from there. Although I don't, I suppose it's possible to rename/renumber the files (remember to renumber the .xml files too) after they've been copied, which will make them easier to identify. Another solution is to use larger capacity cards, so you don't have so many "restarts".
With steady shot on, it tries to compensate for movement, which means that your pans and tilts won't be smooth. On a gimbal I generally find the two work nicely together.
I dont have a a7iii yet, but just to say that your explanations are the most clear and to the point ever on any subject on youtube :)
Thank you, that was very kind of you to comment.

Hi, you Know how set Gain 0 for video? If you see the low Lights clips recorded from Sony A7III in Sony Catalyst the information of camera master gain adjustment set gain from +9 Db to +33Db with much noise in dark sites.
On this, as most hybrid still/video cameras, there is no gain control - just an ISO setting.

Maarten Heilbron thanks for quick and nice response. Well once it’s available I guess I upgrade. Seems out of stock everywhere.
It's in short supply in Toronto also - seems very popular.

You bet! I appreciate your kind words.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you, much appreciated.
Hellow Maarten, that was a very wonderful and depth explanation. I haven’t yet bought Sony alpha 7 iii but I soon should get one. Should I go for any other camera if I am a first timer?
Still an excellent choice.
Face Party in AF! That's what I read in it too! And the Fun button!! I love it !

Thanks for the kind words. So, what you're saying is that my subliminal messaging is working?
Thank you. There is a lot of good detailed information here. Sony really don't like to make things simple did they?
Always happy to help. Sony made things on as complicated as needed to make it powerful enough to serve the many videographers who have a clear vision of what they need a camera to do.
Great video man!
That's kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
If you don't know in advance, use the 120 frame HD mode. Thanks for your kind words.
Great presentation
That very kind of you to say, thanks!
Very nice presentation....
Thanks for your kind words, always appreciated.
Sony lenses (with the exception of the cinema lens) don't have an accurate ability to hit a focus point manually, so doing a manual rack focus will be very hit and miss and frustrating.
good work maarten, wish you would have made a settings video for the nikon D750
Sorry, I'm now trying to do the at the same time as the review - just sometimes I have the camera for such a short time I don't have time to do it.
quick question. i am looking at this camera for vlogging and video work. which small lens would you suggest, for my nikon i would use something like a 24-35 prime. i dont know what sony options there are. vlogging and night timelapse is my focus.
quick answer - with the d750 (wow, are we off-topic here) as it's FX, I'd get the FX 24mm F1.8 ED. For the A7 III Sony has an FE 28.
great presentation, calm, precise and easy to follow..can I ask some questions.
If you are prepared to edit, and potentially want some audio recording, use 120.
ok that explains it, thank you..good day. )@@MaartenHeilbron

Great video!
Thanks! Kind words are always appreciated.
RE ND ... Right ... never though about that. I guess I'll keep the Lumix for 4K vacations.
There are lots of ND filter solutions available from single filters to kits that mount a filter holder and can be more easily adapted to a variety of lens filter diameters.
Shutter speed 1/60 produces a bit rough motion. I prefer old school 1/30. :)
Although most people use the 180 rule to set the shutter speed (which amounts to 1/2 the frame rate) - all settings that produce the result you prefer are acceptable.
Great reviews! Q: When recording 4K and using an external monitor, does the rear display go dark like on other Sony cameras?
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, a lot of quirky behaviour in this regard.
When you change AF, metering and ISO adjustments etc in video mode, do those settings override any pre-existing stills settings on the camera?
Which settings do you mean? There is no independence between stills and video on this model, as there is on some more recent Sony cameras.

No Video and a small ISO range. Auto focus is slow. The view finder interface is not very good. I was really looking for something I can grow into.
The A6500 does provide better functionality for all of those issues, but so does the A7 III.

2) The settings that provide the image you prefer.
such a good video! :D
Always nice to read kind words from my viewers - thanks!
Thanks martin
always my pleasure.
BTW - if you use 4K in 30p mode - you will get a 1.2x crop on the sensor. Where if you use 24p with 100m, you will get no crop and a full sensor read out.
Thanks. What's the quality difference that you perceive between the crop and the full readout?
Maarten Heilbron quality wise it doesn’t matter. It’s only that the image one can capture is a bit more narrow than using the 24p setting since the sensors resolution is much higher than needed for the 4K, it wouldn’t affect the quality of each individual frame.

As Maarten explains above, you probably won't take too much of an IQ hit and the lens is significantly cheaper than the Batis.
yes, in lowlight you loose some light because of crop.
Thanks for adding your insights.
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you so much for your help, keep up the great work!! :-)
Always glad to be of assistance.
Thanks a lot! Very help and inspiring, and keep posting great stuff as usual!
I'll do my best, thanks.
Is it possible to reduce the time of exposure instead of buying ND filter? Is there some reason why you can't go down 1/160 of a second? I think 1/320 will let less light in... Thank you.
Shutter speeds faster than 1/60 (or so) will make motion look jumpy and unnatural.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you
4K at 30p results in a 1.2x crop on the sensor. 24p or 25p use the full-frame. Keep this in mind.
The resolution of 4K video requires only 8Mp of resolution. Keep this in mind also.
Matey this was really fucking helpful!!! Thank you so much!! :D
While I thank you for your kind words, possibly next time, it's not necessary to be profane.

Also, when I turn on the a7 3, the camera has a small jolt to it and when I pick it up from the desk, it also has the same small jolt, is it supposed to do this!??
I may send this back, im assuming the firmware is updated since its brand new
That does not sound right, and it likely needs repair.
Probably your best approach - as long as you're sure you've understood and are following the instructions properly.
When I use a picture profile, will the neutral creative mode be disabled?
Yes, use the picture profile controls (which are more extensive) instead.
Alright, good to know. Thank you. :)
Always happy to help.
Would you mind explaining why you shoot at 30 fps instead of 24?
Because nearly all viewers of my content will be watching on screens that refresh at 30 frames or a multiple. Only cinema projectors use a 24 frame refresh. More detail here: ruclips.net/video/z1rdjGLmsd8/видео.html
is it ever ok to use exposure compensation ?
It's always OK - just remember, it's not a magic fourth exposure setting. Depending on your other settings, it will make adjustments to the shutter speed, aperture or ISO. So if the exposure mode is manual, the only setting EV can adjust is ISO - so it's just as easy to adjust the ISO.
Maarten Heilbron thank you! Yea I’m planning on just always shooting manual settings for video
I think that's a good approach. My worry with auto settings is that it's always making changes which can complicate editing.
I'm still having trouble with autofocus. The touchscreen ability doesn't register for focusing on an object and the autofocus is almost non-existent as I hold down the shutter button. Basically having to do manuel focus for video. I'm sure 90% of the focusing problems I'm having is user-error but I can't seem to find how to fix it :/
Is touch turned on? Is the lens AF switch in the auto position? I assume you're in AFC, which area mode are you using?
I found out it's the lens adapter (Metabones V - Canon to Sony). It apparently disables AF during video/movie setting... Wasted $400 on it :(
Sorry, assumed you were using a native lens ...
Yeah, I apologize. I meant to add that one there. Any recommendations on settings now that I'll have to shoot manual for a bit? Shooting mainly football. Thanks & love your work!

Sorry, ***RELINK!!!
I appreciate your help and advice. Thank you!

That's very kind, appreciated. And I think you're right, children should be provided with useful and unbiased information.

Why turn off steady shot if youre on a tripod? What about gimbals?
With steady shot on, it tries to compensate for movement, which means that your pans and tilts won't be smooth. On a gimbal I generally find the two work nicely together.
Maarten Heilbron what about gimbals that pans and tilt? Would you leave steady shot on?
I would and do.
Maarten Heilbron ok thank you
always happy to help
