- Hi! I would love for 23andMe to sponsor this results video as well as send me a bunch of free kits, so I could get DNA ancestry results for all my friends and family. Xoxo, bye. JK, but that would be awesome. Anyway, it was so fun learning more about myself and my family and the 23andMe results were really shocking in a way! I also can't believe the amount of 2nd cousins I have that I do not know of... but my DNA had a lot of matches in the 23andMe system which was awesome!
What part of my 23andMe results did you find the most shocking!? Have you done a 23andMe? I would love to hear all of your 23andMe stories, as I thought this was so interesting and so much fun!

It's very rare for an African American to be 100% African. Most African Americans are 5-20% European. While most Europeans are 99-100% European. So any mixture will result in more European. Using 20% European as an example, your dad would statistically give you 40% African and 10% European from his side. And your mom would pass on 50% European as her half. It's also possible to get all 20% of the European and 30% African from your father or on the other extreme 50% African and no European at all from your father. Those two latter extremes are highly improbably, but I'm using those scenarios as examples. A statistical guess would be that your father has around 8% European DNA.
Skin tone is not a factor in determining genetic makeup. I'm your skin tone and both my parents are black, my four grandparents and eight great grandparents. I got light skin from my father who got it from his mother, who got it from hers who got it from a mixed mother (my great great grandmother). But my paternal grandfather is very dark skinned. Half my dad's siblings are dark skinned. I'm 81% African, 18% European and 1% Native American/SE Asian. I have about the same DNA composition as Don Cheadle, who is 81% African and 19% European and quite dark skinned. I'm 45.6% Nigerian on 23andMe, from Igboland. I have combed thru my AncestryDNA relatives and had already surmised this before the recent update, as out of the 20 Nigerian relatives I found 17 were Igbo. The others being two Yoruba and a Hausa. I was able to match my DNA regions to a people in all the West African countries. It's just the Cameroon/Congo that I have nothing. I found a single relative on my mother's test, but he has not replied.
That is all true! I figured my dad wasn’t going to be 100% African, but I was surprised with the amount of different regions and backgrounds that were a part of his DNA. Doing his 23 And Me would be super helpful and interesting as well. You know quite a lot about yours which is great. Thank you!
@@doubleutee8867 Huh?
When you look at pure black West Africans they look nothing like mixed race people…so her being more white makes sense
Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese, and Greek tend to have middle eastern / North African. Your results are very similar to mine…wow
@@doubleutee8867 Okay. Without that context "you get around" is a term used for promiscuity. I was like, "Where did that comes from?" 😅
If you can convince your parents and grandparents to do it (DNA) you will be surprised even more!!!
I could have told u that without a test look at your nose that has white writen all
Over it
The Igbo people of West Africa are often light in skin color. This is not from admixture but is a tribal characteristic.
no they are not! Indigenous Africans were darker skinned. Igbos are not light skinned, and if they are, it's because of admixture, as the French colonized them too. Idk why y'all think Africans are pure.. y'all mixed just like us! 🤣
Ig-bo = He-brew = Black = Semites Not Originating from Europeans. Just like Ethiopians are 100% African. I don't like when people try to place colonization on all people. Everywhere is not America. Every country has the potential to have a few mixed people or more, but Hebrews (including Igbos) are diverse, non-European people. I would know.
I'm not Igbo, but my friends are. The commonality is being He-brew (= Ig-bo). I would believe them first.
Some are brown skin not light skin. The idea that igbos are light skin is a myth.
You are a beautiful young woman. It looks like you got the best from each side.
I got my 23andme results about a month ago and my results were very similar in terms of the European vs African percentages. I’m around 57% European and 41% African and about 2% trace ancestry and unassigned. It’s nice to get confirmation on what you are especially when youre a biracial or mixed race person… it can be hard to judge just by appearances alone.
I got 72 percent African and 25 percent European and 2 percent Native American. My whole life I had no clue what I was so it’s nice to finally know
@@azureharris8647 Yes I’m happy you got confirmation. It’s like a nice sense of peace 🥰🥰
I figured most biracial would be around 35-45% African and 55 to 65% European since the average AA is around 70-90% African and 10-30% European.
I literally have the same %
That’s literally the average Dominican.
It's why you're so pretty. Be proud.
You are the person you have decided to be. Accepting are ancestors can be diffucult. it goes a long way to understanding the narrative of how we came to be. You are a gorgeous, special and bueatiful.
Man, your not gonna decide to be black, because it convenient for you all. It’s obvious she more white than black. Maybe her father gas mixed blood. She is not black, biracial are not black people, they are mixed blood
Having 2nd cousins can be cool especially if you have someone in between to kinda be the bridge. Everyone is some kind of cousin it is just a matter of how far away and the shortest route. You seem nice so I hope our route is short.
Black folk (African Americans who have been on the continent and are descended from those who were brought over), are not 100% African, despite the skin tone, that is why your European numbers are higher. Yes, the admixture and how it came to be is a sore point for many and rather say they have indigenous than European.
Well yeh, if you compare what the average African American looks like compared to the average sub Saharan African, they look completely different
@@ipolarisi2381 Many African Americans look very African, if that makes sense and many Africans look African American. Look at Wesley Snipes, Eddie Murphy looks like many Ghanians, Whoopi Goldberg looks like an East African....

Hi sis welcome to the family,♥️ from London 🇬🇧
You said you are dark. But you're not. Very attractive lady either way.
I love it. You tried to compliment her but inadvertently insulted her. Do tell, which is the fairer colour in your opinion ?
She's 100% beautiful!!
As we know, in the United States Black is cultural much more than physical. You definitely need to have The Motherland in you but, after that, we are all people of black African descent. Love this post! Thanks for sharing your story, my sister!
That's really racist! Your obsession with race sounds like the kind of shit the Nazis used to put out - the "motherland"? Really? Have you ever actually been to any part of Africa? And she is only your "sister" because one of her distant ancestors was black? That's SICK! You need to take a good look at yourself - not for the colour of your skin (nobody sane gives a fuck about that) but for who you are as a human soul.
We're not all black African descent. We are al descended from a father and mother from the middle east, however.
Has to be an African with is speech, after you all sold your people, trying to rub out your blackness🙄🙄
She is also of european descent. Even Majority white, like most biracials.
Biracials do not go into the black category.
@@playlists5643 who told you most biracial people are predominately white?
This is cool. For me, there's no point in saying I am % of something because the percent only refers to the DNA. Your grandfather being only Italian makes you pretty Italian regardless of how much of his DNA you actually took. Since he is your grandfather, people would think it would be 25%, but genes don't flow like a blood quantum (a legal definition of a person's race based on generations removed from sole members to a certain legally defined race, normally that's based on geography more than looks.) So the percentages might not actually tell you if you have more or fewer ancestors, just that you inherited more or less of their DNA.
People do your research it does not matter what an African American look like on the outside on average they have 24% European ancestry and for the least 12% European ancestry.
the least is actually 5%.
I think this is the biggest misconception about Biracial people via Black American parents and White parents. It is almost never 50/50. I'm Black but my daughter's test showed she's majority white as well.
It's because Black Americans are typically part European.
@@sayitloudblcknproud Thank you!!!!
thanks for sharing. you are a great public speaker btw ;)
I've always been wanting to do a dna test but I always been nervous about it because there must be a lot of ethnicities. I really think I'm more Eastern European more than anything because I have relatives that are mostly Eastern European so maybe that is what I would get as highest percentage. I always been curious about some others like Italian, Spanish, Scandinavian, etc. I'm not sure what percentages those will be yet so hopefully I get some interesting results. I also can't wait to connect with the European relatives I mostly will have since I never knew my 2nd cousins at all.
I have a test sitting in my cupboard for the last 2 years lol.. im scared to take it because im afraid it’ll say im not my parents kid.. I mean if kids have been switched at birth in the US than it could happen elsewhere right
@@EriBarr Sometimes, you just need to know the hard truth and deeply accept it if you're not your parent's kid.
What's to be nervous about? I don't understand that.
you should be more afraid that the government now has access to your DNA.
@@janetannerevans2320 You don't know that. I never done the dna test though but that sounds ridiculous.
I too am biracial and have always identified as Black. I was never treated or identified as white or would have even been white passing in the Jim crow south. Both of us would have failed there brown paper bag test with all our Melanin. I don't deny my white ancestors but everyday i look in the mirror I see a Black man and i'm proud of it and don't let anyone tell you who you are! Be true to yourself!
What's your point caller ?
@@creekyknee The point is biracial people can decide for themselves who they racially identify as. It's our choice and no one else's.
No, this girl could have definitely passed if she had to. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to because we live in the 21st century.
Why not identify as mixed ?
In the US, it's like one has to be black or white so much so that Kamala Harris is considered only black which is very offensive for us Indians
You are 100% gorgeous
Makes sense and your physical looks reflect that. In America, Black is the latest term for what is actually a sub nationality, not always a distinctive racial group. I know people that look more "white," than you, but have no "white" relatives going back 4 generations, and have higher percentages of sub Saharan African. Very mixed populations can really produce interesting results. This is what makes us Americans. By the way maybe Americans that are not mixed look "Asian" to people that have only met Asians with those features but haven't been exposed to ( pre conquest) non mixed indeginious populations which are more numerous in central and South America as well as the SW and West USA.
You should absolutely reach out. They are your family who may not even know you existed or it’s possible that they did know that you existed and have been looking for you. I hope and pray that you enjoy this journey.

Nice name btw
We are all mixed and cannot control who God made our ancestors. I have several ethnic groups that makes up my DNA, English, French and Iberian as well as west Africa and southern indigenous native American.
God played no role
I’m 40% European, lighter and serious arch in our feet, the whole family has light eyes and most of us were born with blonde hair and blue eyes. Our dads father was European an I have to think our dad had to have had a very high % of European for us to have 40 and over.
Sometimes you look like your heritage, sometimes you dont
You’re going to be surprised how much those percentages will change as more data is gathered.
Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
Well I think you are very pretty!
my grandma was born in Tanzania too and grew up there
My brother did a DNA test we are mixed as well black souther father white German mother. my brother was 66% white. My dad is 30% white, as black southern man lets just say he didn't accept all that white but if you see some of his family members it was obvious. Also, the most African DNA will be found in the south vs northern blacks will most likely have white DNA since mixed race people fleed north for more equality. And white southerners are more likely to have white and native DNA whereas white northerners are generally more European
The average African American has 10-20% European admixture, so it shouldn’t really be that surprising
7% here.....I was surprised I had that much...
For them to identify your Nigerian tribe means that they probably matched you with a Nigerian Igbo that is on their DNA database.
You should do an AncestryDNA test. It is has the largest database; thus it is more accurate.
It may have a larger dataset but this does not make it more accurate. Just different, Myheritage and Ancestry are very good for people who have European ancestry. That 123 thing only seems to be popular in the US so you will get very few DNA matches from Europe if that is what interests you. Geneanet was always the most used in Continental Europe but it seems that it has gone bust and will probably be taken over by Ancestry or one of the other larger businesses.
I have green eyes with hazel in the middle. My mom has dark brown and everyone on my dad's side of the family has blue eyes.

Our ancestry is quite similar. I've an Irish mother and an American father (African American). My results were 61.4% European and 38% African. Your Italian sounds about right because it's your great grandfather who was Italian and 8% would be in the range of DNA you'd expect to inherit from a great grandparent (the lower range, but still within a normal amount. In a world where we inherited equal amounts from each great grandparent you'd expect to inherit 12.5% from each one) Though we inherit 50% from each parent, we don't inherit equal amounts from our grandparents and great grandparents
Yes! I found all of that very interesting. My grandfathers DNA was more present than my grandmothers, but my mothers genotype was more dominant than my fathers. But my dads features and colorings (physical traits) were more dominant than my moms. Very cool that we have similar ancestry. Thanks for commenting!

I'd suggest the possibility that the ashkenazi jewish might actually be sephardic jewish. They are genetically similar. And considering that you have spanish, native american, and miscellaneous middle eastern ancestry, i'd bet that you also have sephardic jewish ancestry, via northern mexico. It is quite common among the mexican/tejano population of south texas, myself included.

Woah! Crazy! Bell (mom) is from UK but mostly Ireland, and Sweat (dad) is from Georgia. I wonder if we have any genetic overlap.
Just remember, it doesn't matter which ethnicity you look at, they did conquest & slavery. The reason why you see a lot about European conquest & slavery is because Europe was very good at it. Thus they conquered & enslaved more, and they are more known for it. This does not mean you conquer & enslave, your heritage doesn't shape who you are.
actually you have sold mostly to arabs
the difference was more in europeans giving food and allowing offspring

The ashkenazi is likely to be just Southern European rather than jewish, especially at 0.2%. Many ashkenazi jews have Southern European ancestry, as when their ancestors arrived in Europe, this was where many ended up. Most paternal "European" jewish ancestry is non European, but many of them have maternal European ancestry, so usually they are around 50-60% Middle Eastern, and 40-50% European. Their genetic clusters tend to be halfway between Europe and the Middle East reflecting this. So that 0.2% is likely just to be Southern European ancestry that you and ashkenazi jews share.

Black, Indian or Asian genes are very dominant. White if you noticed are more recessive traits. Notice a black & white child May Be 50% of both. But appearances can lean towards one race more than the other because of recessive and dominant traits. Even if genetically one is both equally, we will look more than the other. Apparently what we look like May not match what we assume would be the correlated race. Also our parents may not be what they look like it depends on their DNA which is added up to make you.

Your mom having brown hair proves she's not pale white, as that color was lying dormant in her genes all along. Often times caucasians are born being blonde for their earlier few years, then if there is color in their genes (through admixture usually), it comes through later on around maturity. This is common.
Though Blondes too can be mixed, have other non- european ancestry.
Traits like lighter skin, blue eyes and lighter hair are just relatively recent i.e. approx 11,000 years ago. Europeans have varied colouring and things like blond hair, red hair and blue eyes are recessive and whether people are dark haired or blonds they will have the same ancestry. This is especially the case with people of the same ethnicity but even areas like Northwestern European are amazing close in genetic distance.
A mixgrill
