I was SHOCKED at the amount of hand work.
Watched a tour of the G&L facility on Anderton's TV and Dave talked about how much hand sanding goes into the neck and how that makes each one slightly different. But to me it's amazing how close they come out at the end. These guys are incredible craftsmen.
I learned something new in this video. I use a laser engraver at work, but I’ve never heard of a fill stick. That gives the engraving a very professional look! Thanks!

Much G&L love here. I had the opportunity to visit the shop and chat with the team about 10 or so years back. They were so gracious and I’ve only played G&L since that date.
I'd love to visit the G&L lounge; jam all the gear on an actual stage setup...

This is a great project for the brand! My first proper American guitar was a G&L Legacy that my grandfather bought me before he died in 1995, and it’s the only guitar I’ve kept all these many years after countless trades, new acquisitions and sales. Damn fine instruments! G&L should be WAY bigger than you are in terms of US market share. Fender can’t touch your level of quality for the price (comparing US made models)!
Their factory is about 3 miles from here. So naturally I am a G&L fan.

Great way to advertise your guitars! I have an Indonesian Legacy that is a really fine instrument. Now I'm saving up for a US model.
Outside of some basic CNC work this is truly a hand made instrument, and it’s already beautiful.

If I was going to build a partscaster, 100% shop at G&L first - unlike most other companies, they will sell you every piece of their instrument, from bridge to preamp, and even more cool, they're at reasonable prices instead of an upcharge for being OEM (there are even necks and bodies there sometimes). I've been eyeballing a set of the z-coils for a long time...oh crap - there's some on sale right now! GAS attack! (not an affiliate, people just need to know when something cool exists)
G&L necks are fit to bodies manually, hence using their spares is not as simple as a typical partsocaster. They also only make one guitar neck now (which does not work for me). I love G&L, but their are better suppliers for a partsocaster project. I hope to buy a Tribute Series Comanche next year, and I have a Will Ray bridge pickup waiting for it (I might buy a second to run low in the middle position, as he does.).
Just put together an ASAT Special with an S-500 neck. Body, tribute I believe, was sold with pickups, bridge, and electronics. It all works great.

@@Robstafarian No, neck from Fullerton. I may have been lucky, as I originally planned to use the neck on an Espada body. The Espada seems to have a different neck joint.
@@Robstafarian tell me where I'm getting z-coils then? Who else makes a side locking bridge like theirs? Bodies, necks, yes only mentioned as an illustration of just what G&L is willing to sell directly to the public. But every part can be available, including MFD bass pickups and their preamps, which I also would like to put in a bass build. Read thing, then comment. I really don't see Cor-Tek (the maker of their Tribute series and the only reason I haven't bought their parts yet - I don't buy from companies that use Cor-Tek) doing custom shop level work on second tier/budget models - those are 100% CNC/PLEK and human hand will touch those as little as possible.
G&L/CLF is literally the only company I still pimp who uses Cor-Tek - no matter the shitty business decisions of the descendants, Leo Fender was still a thing and innovations were made right up until his death that hadn't been fully productized until after - G&L Tribute series started in Japan, actually. Then someone made IMO a very immoral choice. /rant

I wish guitar builders offered an arm curve on production line t style guitars. I guess that’s why I don’t have a t style guitar
Hate to be picky but the fingerboard looked noticeably thicker on the treble side after they inserted the dot markers and used the radius sanding bar. Not a huge issue but not great either maybe it was improved later on before finishing. As a luthier I look for things like this

I have seen how the “F” company does things( having lived in Corona) and I have to say, not as much hand work. This is what makes G&L feel like a custom shop compared to the “F” company’s guitars……
