The Marshall game was like we were on a 50ft high with an explainable fall but this was jumping off a Sears Tower high with no explaination. Unbelievably and immeasurably worse

The 3 losses to Marshall, Stanford, and Northern Illinois show clearly a coach in Freeman who does not understand that being a pure "player's coach" does not work. Anyone who has coached or taught knows this, but unfortunately Freeman has still not learned this and should not be learning this lesson at a marquee program like Notre Dame! The players of all great coaches all had some form of healthy respectful fear of their head coach -- just look at Nick Saban, Lou Holtz, etc., etc. The 3 Freeman losses to Marshall, Stanford, and Northern Illinois shows clearly that Freeman's players may love him as a friend and player's coach, but they lack any healthy fear of Freeman and this is a HUGE PROBLEM!

I’m not even getting mad anymore. This program isn’t even worth wasting my time or money going forward. Now all we can do is wait for Freeman to lose some more of these games and get fired in a year or two. Until then all I can do is think about who the next coach will be.
3 strikes losing to massively inferior opponents = serious coaching problem: Strike 1 Marshall, Strike 2 Stanford, Strike 3 Northern Illinois. Result: One more loss for Freeman this year and he should be let go and replaced before next season PERIOD! Reason - this is a serious defective ongoing pattern which is unacceptable.
I had a bad feeling when NIU had that 1st TD because it looked like both ND players took bad angles and then we went 3 and out and I told my wife “we are going to do this again aren’t we?”
The people I talked to had conflicting accounts of the ND practices. Some say the practices were good. The team was up and enthusiastic. But a few guys I talked to thought the practices were SOFT. More like run thrus and not physical at all. All I know was the first Series Notre Dame went right down the field and scored. Just as scripted in practice. But N. Illinois with Brown Punched back and scored and the Irish knew they were in a game. When the game goes off script is the team and Freeman tough enough? Notre Dame got punched and never came back. And the sad thing the Irish were getting all the calls. That 3rd down carry by Northern Illinois was a first down and the refs let the play stand as short of the 1st Down. That gave ND a chance for one last drive.
This loss didn't surprise me one bit.. I wasnt excited after last weeks Texas A&M win cause I knew a loss or two like this was coming this year.. This is a common thing for ND... Weve seen it to many times in the past and its still apart of our present and future.
NIU has been a solid program for decades. They really need to get to a bigger conference. The Big 12 should look at them to get the conference a team in Illinois

Like you, I was scared going into this game. I knew we were in trouble, as soon as I saw that Freeman's energy leave was 100% less that last week. It reminded me of Kelly, who called every game a business trip. Hat's off to NIU, they played really well. They had attitude and it looked like ND was the intimidated team. NIU was on a mission and ND couldn't do anything to stop them from getting it done.
I believe he lost the team last year with the Ohio State loss. All this loss did was reinforce the same thing. Freeman may be a good dude, but losing to NI should never happen. As long as he is the coach ND fans better get ready for a few surprise losses each year.

@@aunch3 I am a Notre Dame alum (‘60s, national champions in 1966). Of course, I follow, root for the team, but I’m not a nut about it. A great thing about the football games for alumni is the motivation to go back a weekend, see friends, see how the place has changed, etc. Guys don’t have that same incentive for basketball, lacrosse, other sports or other campus events really.

I remember Notre Dame's last great run during the late 80s through 1993, I remember when Notre Dame Stadium was an intimidating place to play. I couldn't believe what I was watching yesterday. Riley Leonard is a nice kid, he has terrible field vosion and he cant pass the ball more than 15 yards, there were receivers open.

To me the offense this year looks totally different in that they're tryng to spread it out and throw it all the time instead of running the ball and using the tight ends. Its just that they don't have the QB (and maybe receivers?) to do it so it isn't working. Last year everyone was pissing and moaning to chuck it down the field and ND put up some of their highest point totals ever I believe. Now they want to chuck it and they can't figure out how to sustain a drive and score points!
That limit the mistakes take no chances COULDVE helped with inside 5 minutes and instead of a clock eating drive with a FG to go up by 4 and leaving them with under a minute and needing a TD. Mind boggling you wait to when you should drain some clock to take a shot and instead of overthrow slightly under throw by 12 yards. This is on Freeman. Not the QB, not the OC, it's on Freeman. Marcus Freeman is in year 3 he has had 3 different QBs 3 different OCs and this keeps happening. Marcus Freeman is a garbage head coach and this will continue to happen as long as he is here. His philosophy towards the game of football does not work in the modern era of college football, you have to field a competent offense and he refuses to. It doesn't matter who the OC is, it doesn't matter who the Qb is Marcus Freeman doesn't want to play offense.

Yes the harsh reality is Leonard is not the quarterback for this kind of system. He simply cannot make all of the throws and is slow in his reads. He’s like a bigger version of Tyler Buckner. WHATS NEXT FOR ND THATS WHATS NEXT. They won’t change QBs, you don’t grow an arm or passing OL overnight. Freeman maybe rightly with this QB will demand 4.9 Ave yards a completion- NIU doubled that. AND WILL DEMAND 7 yard routes. But won’t put in a QB who can change that formula. He likes it. If he has to pass make it low risk as possible. Defense and kicking is how you get closer to the goalie. The two things that worked... Running Love and running Leonard... were both MIA late in the game when they were most needed. Freeman needed to tell Denbrock to stop being cute, run the ball, and win the game by a point or four. That 2nd and 1 chuck that was 20 yards short of where it needed to be was seriously some first year high school kind of crap. Morrison losing the man going for the pick on the first NIU TD was bad. The way the D-line was pushed all over the place and gave up 6 yards even when they stuffed a play was bad. Greathouse dropping one of the few good balls Leonard threw that would have been a sure 30 yard gain and at least a FG was bad. The punter was bad, the FG kicker was bad. Just a huge disappointment all around. Not sure what to make of this team. Have to hope it was just a bad game and they have the heart and the ability to right the ship.
The defense was supposed to be elite if your offense is supposed to generate points but isn't that's when the leadership on the defense needs to step up and cause turnovers at least JD knew that
I love and respect ND’s tradition. I feel for you guys and understand your disappointment BUT it is only game 2. Do you allow for the possibility that you can learn great lessons, both coaches and players and reboot the season after the disappointment is put aside?
The problem is the ND administration. To them football is just a business where marginal performance is good enough to make a profit. Fr. Hesburgh tried to de-emphasize football but eventually learned that this was not good for ND. ND has invested significant money on football, e. g. facilities, coordinators, and NIL. Money is never a problem at ND. However, personnel selections, coaches and portal selections, have been less than ideal. Hopefully ND’s new president will learn from the past and take appropriate action.
John I do not know what is worse having to stomach the loss or dealing with all the Haters that play golf at my course I run. So sad Joliet people rooting against ND and for anyone that plays the IRISH. I get the people that are happy for NIU and normally I would be happy for a local school except when you outplay, outperform and out coach my favorite team. I had a bad feeling when NIU had that 1st TD because it looked like both ND players took bad angles and then we went 3 and out and I told my wife “we are going to do this again aren’t we?”

The people I talked to had conflicting accounts of the ND practices. Some say the practices were good. The team was up and enthusiastic. But a few guys I talked to thought the practices were SOFT. More like run thrus and not physical at all. All I know was the first Series Notre Dame went right down the field and scored. Just as scripted in practice. But N. Illinois with Brown Punched back and scored and the Irish knew they were in a game. When the game goes off script is the team and Freeman tough enough? Notre Dame got punched and never came back. And the sad thing the Irish were getting all the calls. That 3rd down carry by Northern Illinois was a first down and the refs let the play stand as short of the 1st Down. That gave ND a chance for one last drive.

I knew we were in trouble, as soon as I saw that Freeman's energy leave was 100% less that last week. It reminded me of Kelly, who called every game a business trip.
Hat's off to NIU, they played really well. They had attitude and it looked like ND was the intimidated team. NIU was on a mission and ND couldn't do anything to stop them from getting it done.

@@aunch3 I am a Notre Dame alum (‘60s, national champions in 1966). Of course, I follow, root for the team, but I’m not a nut about it. A great thing about the football games for alumni is the motivation to go back a weekend, see friends, see how the place has changed, etc. Guys don’t have that same incentive for basketball, lacrosse, other sports or other campus events really.

I remember Notre Dame's last great run during the late 80s through 1993, I remember when Notre Dame Stadium was an intimidating place to play. I couldn't believe what I was watching yesterday. Riley Leonard is a nice kid, he has terrible field vosion and he cant pass the ball more than 15 yards, there were receivers open.
College football has simply passed on from ND.
I just remember sitting there watching us march down with four minutes to go and we are finally moving the ball a little bit we could kill the clock take field goal. We were up one anyways. And then I see him step back to throw the ball. And I just let out this is gonna get intercepted surrounded by NIU fan.I didn’t look up because I knew what was gonna happen. This dude cannot throw it. He lost us the game because he had no chance of winning it. It was the worst game see live. Everyone walking out of that stadium was quiet and pissed off. It was a stunner.

To me the offense this year looks totally different in that they're tryng to spread it out and throw it all the time instead of running the ball and using the tight ends. Its just that they don't have the QB (and maybe receivers?) to do it so it isn't working. Last year everyone was pissing and moaning to chuck it down the field and ND put up some of their highest point totals ever I believe. Now they want to chuck it and they can't figure out how to sustain a drive and score points!

This is on Freeman. Not the QB, not the OC, it's on Freeman. Marcus Freeman is in year 3 he has had 3 different QBs 3 different OCs and this keeps happening. Marcus Freeman is a garbage head coach and this will continue to happen as long as he is here. His philosophy towards the game of football does not work in the modern era of college football, you have to field a competent offense and he refuses to. It doesn't matter who the OC is, it doesn't matter who the Qb is Marcus Freeman doesn't want to play offense.

It reminds me of last year after Ohio St, teams knew we couldn’t throw vs any halfway functioning defense, and only had to play to stop the run. Season over at that point. WHATS NEXT FOR ND THATS WHATS NEXT. They won’t change QBs, you don’t grow an arm or passing OL overnight. Freeman maybe rightly with this QB will demand 4.9 Ave yards a completion- NIU doubled that. AND WILL DEMAND 7 yard routes. But won’t put in a QB who can change that formula. He likes it. If he has to pass make it low risk as possible. Defense and kicking is how you get closer to the goalie.

The two things that worked... Running Love and running Leonard... were both MIA late in the game when they were most needed. Freeman needed to tell Denbrock to stop being cute, run the ball, and win the game by a point or four. That 2nd and 1 chuck that was 20 yards short of where it needed to be was seriously some first year high school kind of crap. Morrison losing the man going for the pick on the first NIU TD was bad. The way the D-line was pushed all over the place and gave up 6 yards even when they stuffed a play was bad. Greathouse dropping one of the few good balls Leonard threw that would have been a sure 30 yard gain and at least a FG was bad. The punter was bad, the FG kicker was bad. Just a huge disappointment all around. Not sure what to make of this team. Have to hope it was just a bad game and they have the heart and the ability to right the ship.

ND has invested significant money on football, e. g. facilities, coordinators, and NIL. Money is never a problem at ND. However, personnel selections, coaches and portal selections, have been less than ideal.
