  • Flag-bearer of contemporary vocal jazz presents funk project with master guitarist.
Kurt Elling vocals, Charlie Hunter guitar, Julius Rodriguez keys, Marcus Finnie drums
Kurt Elling is considered one of the greatest jazz vocalists of our time. Unlike any other he puts lyrics to existing instrumental jazz. On his album SuperBlue he adapts compositions by Carla Bley and Wayne Shorter, and he covers The Roots and Tom Waits. On the record he shows his funky side, thanks to the close collaboration with guitarist Charlie Hunter, who is at home in jazz, funk and hip-hop. Now they will perform together under the name SuperBlue.
Kurt Elling won two Grammys and was nominated fifteen times, also for SuperBlue. The American singer is being praised for his virtuosity, his edgy lyrics, and for incorporating existing poetry in his music. Charlie Hunter is hailed among guitar aficionandos as a unique phenomenon on 7- and 8-string guitar, simultaneously playing melodies, chords and bass lines while improvising and holding an unmistakable groove. He previously collaborated with Norah Jones, John Mayer, Mos Def and D’Angelo.

I’ve seen Superblue live twice and one of those concerts is in my top 5 of all time. What a great show they offer- never drop the level regardless of who is on the keys or drums. And Kurt and Charlie, well, we all know the monsters they are! Thanks SO MUCH for uploading this video and allows to revive a special moment. It is the only one I have found with great audio and video quality. Please NEVER remove it.

@@ElliottBradenS thanks! Wasn't familiar with the tune before listening to Kurt cover it and at a few shows he mentioned it was a Roots song. Didn't know who originally wrote it

This band was a real treat to see and listen to at Newport this summer. This is so nice-Julius is a great new player and Charlie of course always amazing, the drums are so funky and on-Kurt? So mellow like a fine whiskey; fun, funny, ironic, and always that mellow-toned voice.

Charlie should get a lot more recognition and praise than he does. He is a one of a kind, an innovator. But unlike innovators like Van Halen or Allan Holdsworth who ended up being extensively cloned by a host of players, Charlie remains unique.
