I've been doing this since Horizon 1, and had to figure this out first hand. I spent hours watching Keiichi Tsuchiya's drift Bible to better understand his technique,and mostly focused on his shift lock and braking drift. I'm glad someone figured out how to put into words what I had to learn first hand, neat .
Pro tip: When you are about to enter a curve, if you brake and downshift while pressing the acceleration button for just one second, the car will drift very easily, even if you have no steering wheel and pedals, just a joystick or keyboard. I did it in: nfs most wanted, carbon, underground 1, underground 2, gran turismo 2, test drive unlimited and it works all the times, especially with FWD cars (Sorry for my bad english, i hope you can understand it)

keiichi tsuchiya's "high speed drift" was using the tires max front grip to get the rear load extremely low, then turn in. He was able to do this because the 86 has the straight axle rather than independent suspension so it didn't really require much of a turn in. He details it more as initiating oversteer either progressively or slamming down then letting off just to control it, difference in speed was the amount of counter steer, less being the quickest generally. For cars with independent suspension however, it tends to be a bit different lol

I’ve been drifting the 86 in forza for a while now and have been doing exactly this without ever seeing this video or on how Takumi drifted, I just did what came naturally to me
I play carx drift racing for a while now and this how I actually drift in most of the cars, and I just found this video which can help me even get better at doing this technique
A couple of flaws. Takumi's drift technique is predominantly inertia, as well as the anime states that he has little to no counter steer. He uses the suspension to absorb the weight essentially pushing him through the corner. This is possible in forza however it is not in real life due to how momentum and tire wear work. In forza the initiation proscess requires a multitude of steps including heel toe. However it is possible to do without touching the clutch entirely with enough momentum

You helped me find my own technique in forza to do the technique, before entering a corner use both the e brake and brake at the same time and release the gas and oversteer, downshift then counter steer, I named it the reload shift think of it as the tachometer being the gun and bullet count, 10 shots, both the brakes being the trigger, and the shifter is the hammer, you dump the Mag with both brakes, reload with your accelerator, then the "hammer" goes back in place

Step one: aproach corner Step two: trail brake Step three: turn in faster than normal( the faster you turn the wheel, the more the car rotates) Step four: center the wheel Step five: step on the gas and transfer the weight to the rear wheels braking the front wheels grip (you need to do this otherwise you will over steer) Step six: control the gas Step seven: congratulations, i just taught you four wheel drift with minimal countersteer

This randomly popped in my feed, what a great video. I'm reasonably new to FH3 and 4, and I love making replicas of cars; not just looks, but specs too, and I try and emulate the driving style. Been toying for months how to make a decent downhill/uphill for Keisuke, and with the recent-ish release of the Eight Six in FH4, I can finally attempt to recreate Takumi too. I play with pad, but I hope I can emulate the techniques shown here. Thanks!
Thanks! I’m happy you liked it ^^ I also like making replicas and emulating styles, but what I have found is that it’s very hard to drift in Horizon if you use cars under 200hp. 300 hp is the sweetsop for me, where cars start to drift well, is that so for you too?
@@RacingLegendss I don't find it so bad, really. In both FH3 and 4 my Tofu Mobile only has stock tyres, the 150HP version is just a regular rally based build, it can hold a racing line reasonably well while keeping a slide going, its just not that competitive/fast. The 240HP version likes to spin out, considering using Street Tyres for that. I also tweaked the rally build to have more understeer mid-corner, so I can throttle harder, but I'm no Takumi and again its hard to race like that. Engine braking and some more build adjustments may help me keep my speed up and hold racing lines faster.

This is actually a really great video yet i dont understand why you lacks lots of subscribers Also some more stuff i noticed from initial d In the anime i mostly see him going straight then drift instead of the scandanian flick technique i thought the way he brake and shift hard is the way that makes him lost the rear grip thanks to the weight shift thus allowing him to drift enough for the corners As for the drift i noticed that he always drift at a really small angle and almost no countersteer at all (this is pretty much possible but its really hard)

My main car in FH4 is Silvia S15 I tuned it for drift and grip one time I saw ae86 he tried to race me but I win lol I have play FH4 for 2 years and I practice drifting everyday my car in FH4 don't oversteer and drift very fast and also good handling I don't like to swap engine so my s15 in FH4 is SR20DET with intake, exhaust, turbo, intercooler, flywheel, driveshaft, sport brake, sport tire upgrade te37 rims and the bodykit is completely stock and I take out the wing my s15 is very clean no sticker nothing just like Initial D

Yes, but you can destabilize the car swinging the wheel side to side. Then, right at corner entry you brake slightly to initiate, otherwise the wheels lock up
You should get a controller if you can. I use the LB button or L1 on ps3 controller for the clutch and RB for the handbrake, it’s really fun, even being a button, it works really well and you can practice

Yes, when yo do so, the gas pedal will inscrease the rpm WHILE the clutch is depressed. That’s when the revs in the wheels and engine will “match”, really it’s the gearbox and engine that will have the same rpm, but that will keep the tires planted when you want to decelerate. ^^
Yeah, you should try to slow down completely before the turn. I found it harder to slow down when using H&T at first, but then it became just as fast or sometimes faster to slow down that way! Keep practicing an soon you’ll dominate the technique! ^^

Top tip disable clutch but leave manual gearbox on if you’re struggling to pull this off once you get a feel for it it gets easier every turn
Then turn clutch back on if it gets too easy

I'm reasonably new to FH3 and 4, and I love making replicas of cars; not just looks, but specs too, and I try and emulate the driving style. Been toying for months how to make a decent downhill/uphill for Keisuke, and with the recent-ish release of the Eight Six in FH4, I can finally attempt to recreate Takumi too.
I play with pad, but I hope I can emulate the techniques shown here. Thanks!
Thanks! I’m happy you liked it ^^ I also like making replicas and emulating styles, but what I have found is that it’s very hard to drift in Horizon if you use cars under 200hp. 300 hp is the sweetsop for me, where cars start to drift well, is that so for you too?
Yeah, even in a controller you can use these techniques! I don’t always drift using my wheel, as it’s really fun to drive with a pad too :)
@@RacingLegendss I don't find it so bad, really. In both FH3 and 4 my Tofu Mobile only has stock tyres, the 150HP version is just a regular rally based build, it can hold a racing line reasonably well while keeping a slide going, its just not that competitive/fast.
The 240HP version likes to spin out, considering using Street Tyres for that. I also tweaked the rally build to have more understeer mid-corner, so I can throttle harder, but I'm no Takumi and again its hard to race like that.
Engine braking and some more build adjustments may help me keep my speed up and hold racing lines faster.
Cool! I’m not gonna lie, that’s quite a lot of engineering you’re doing, I think the understeer characteristic could definitely help you drifting that tune, let me know how that went! ^^

Also some more stuff i noticed from initial d
In the anime i mostly see him going straight then drift instead of the scandanian flick technique i thought the way he brake and shift hard is the way that makes him lost the rear grip thanks to the weight shift thus allowing him to drift enough for the corners
As for the drift i noticed that he always drift at a really small angle and almost no countersteer at all (this is pretty much possible but its really hard)

Ok i have a question, you explained why he is heel and toeing in the beginning but isnt the point of heel/toe shifting that you dont have engine breaking because you match the revs with the wheels?
No, it's so the tires don't slip for a second after each shift. The engine breaking happens always when you're in any gear but off the throttle

My main car in FH4 is Silvia S15 I tuned it for drift and grip one time I saw ae86 he tried to race me but I win lol I have play FH4 for 2 years and I practice drifting everyday my car in FH4 don't oversteer and drift very fast and also good handling I don't like to swap engine so my s15 in FH4 is SR20DET with intake, exhaust, turbo, intercooler, flywheel, driveshaft, sport brake, sport tire upgrade te37 rims and the bodykit is completely stock and I take out the wing my s15 is very clean no sticker nothing just like Initial D

Yes, but you can destabilize the car swinging the wheel side to side. Then, right at corner entry you brake slightly to initiate, otherwise the wheels lock up

You should get a controller if you can. I use the LB button or L1 on ps3 controller for the clutch and RB for the handbrake, it’s really fun, even being a button, it works really well and you can practice

Hey, I kinda understand the Heel-and-Toe, but I can't really get the grasp of it. Do I need to put it in manual w/ clutch?
Yes, when yo do so, the gas pedal will inscrease the rpm WHILE the clutch is depressed. That’s when the revs in the wheels and engine will “match”, really it’s the gearbox and engine that will have the same rpm, but that will keep the tires planted when you want to decelerate. ^^

Yeah, you should try to slow down completely before the turn. I found it harder to slow down when using H&T at first, but then it became just as fast or sometimes faster to slow down that way! Keep practicing an soon you’ll dominate the technique! ^^
