As a non-Iranian, this interview was so compelling that I have watched it multiple times. The way the Shaw speaks with no fear, and brutal honesty is refreshing, humurous and gives a good insight into what he was really like. What a shame the way it ended for him and his children.

It was this 'interview' that caused the US to pull the plug on him and replace him with the mullahs.

@@lucialamprey2690I spent some time working in Iran from 2000 to 2003. It was really interesting to listen to the locals take on the man.
I was told that he was trying to modernise with a host of economic reforms, including land redistribution. But these were a direct challenge to the mullahs, which is why they fomented a revolution against him. A lot of people who supported the revolution at the time told me they wished they hadn’t.
If you have ever read George Orwell’s Animal Farm you will understand how the thing played out.

@@ivok9846 Sorry. I meant that his poor judgment about what was going on in his country and with his people inadvertently led to the suppression of women. I have read that he was trying to improve Iranian women's opportunities. And, yes, I think that's probably true. He was trying to modernize a country whose clerics fought to keep the populace in the middle ages.

When the people of Iran rejected the Shah with ungratefulness, the kind nation and the great government of Egypt hosted the Shah with open arms, and after his death, the Shah had to be escorted to a magnificent funeral, and until today they are the trustees of his body.
We Iranian people will never forget this kindness and friendship of Egyptian people.

I lived in Los Angeles during the 80s and met many Persians who fled Iran . they were the most lovely people and loved their Shah.

How funny, cause I lived in Los Angeles during the 90s and had AOL Persian 6.0. Got it from a cereal box on CD-ROM, came with 30 free hours. Yes, we used to pay for internet by the hour rather than by the month. Luckily though the CDs with 30 free hours were distributed freely like mad. Theyd send them in the mail, even without you signing up for anything. Everyone I knew just had a stack of them and was able to use the internet for free for several years, until the digital millennium copyright act happened. AOL stopped offering the free hours, and quickly discovered people suddenly had zero interest in the CDs. Around the same time Legacy Napster got shut down, and suddenly the prospect in "burning CDs" lowered heavily in popularity, however soon after, DVD burners started to become affordable and available, and Napster-like fileshare networks started emerging out of the criminal corners of the net as the accelerated transition from dialup slowNet to high speed DSL (the first consumer internet type that was "on all the time" by default without costing extra or disrupting phone service.) and thus the interest in pirating skyrocketed when everyone realized they could now download files larger than 6mb mp3 files, and the software; tv series/movie sharing/downloading opportunities found a new spot up at the top, and would remain popular for a whole decade before hollywood would get triggered and start filing lawsuits to ISPs, who reacted by finding instances of using certain p2p or torrent softwares and send threatening yet not legally binding "warning letters" which I assume were nothing, due to me getting like 30 of them those few years it was happening. I cannot remember why I started this comment, I think it was gonna be a single sentencer, but I kinda drifted into memory lane and put it on cruise control. 🤷♂️

what kind of technology did they have access to before AI and LLM?
@@MichelMrz They already had some early "primitive" statistical methods cos the maths and basic algorithms were already there, only the computing power was such that it would take much more time to process such a request (of analyzing hundreds of newspapers articles for instance). But they already used statistical analysis to prove e.g. whether a given medieval text was written by a certain suspected author or not.
@@MichelMrzNaturally such an analysis wouldn't be as good as that of a modern LLM (assuming it wouldn't be biased, cos obviously you couldn't ask Microsoft's ChatGPT/Bing or Google's Gemini to perform a task like what Shah described due to censorship limitations put by the owners of that software on their AI models) but in combination with a team of human researchers, they could make a fairly decent study about potential bias in newspapers during the 70s.

The Shah is a legend. How is that possible to be this accurate about the world? He was right on point answering questions. His wisdom is unbelievable. He was surely ahead of his time and ahead of his countrymen of the time who apparently could not understand his superbly accurate vision. No wonder that Iranian new generations now chant slogans in favor of the Shah and his son Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi these days in the streets of Iran.
Exactly! The 2022/2023 counter revolution is to undo the 1979 coup (aka "Islamic revolution ') where Iranians are claiming back their country and want the Pahlavi dynasty back to Iran.

I turned 27 years old on the day this was broadcast. Six months later, I found myself in Tehran, Iran, working for the American telecommunications company that was poised to participate in the modernization of the whole country's telecom network. I spent over six months there and when I left, I was of the opinion that the Shah was a well respected monarch. Was supposed to return to the project in 1978, but then certain things happened. Seeing this interview again now, I'm still of the opinion that the Shah was an intelligent and savvy ruler who had the best interests of his country and people in mind.
rulers with good intentions are still fallible. its not a reliable form of governance.
He was wise beyond his time.

The current leader of Iran never ever dares to sit in front of a journalist and answer all the different types of questions and get challenged. What a legend was Shah. Rest in peace.
Maybe you have not seen the interviews of Ahmedinajad.
Of course I've seen it, but what you need to learn ( if interested) is to know the difference between the top leader who holds the real and main power and a president ( for instance Ahmadinezhad) who just followes the dictated orders.

Due to this I know that with lobby groups, rich people behind the scenes, the military industrial complex, zionists and the list goes on ... true power in USA is not in the hands of the president. In other words, the president cannot do what he wants, there are constraints. It was not so much like this 100 years ago, but it is now.
What I can safely say is that Iran is not invading and destroying other countries on pack of lies like USA did with Iraq, thanks to the lobby groups and the liars who said on oath in the USA that Iraq has the bomb.

My shah (king) was not a politician. He was answering questions with straightforward answers. But politicians most of times know how to refuse to answer or how to lie. Being candid was a liability for him.
Nowadays, I see so many interviews of him in English and French over internet. He was much more fluent in French articulating much better.
He honestly seems like a half decent guy, at the very least, and I find the reporters questions kind of annoying...

Part of the hostility between the two nations is of course due to the religious competition that has existed for the last 45 years. Obviously the great majority of Iranians are opposed to the regime in Iran. There are also more historical events that has left a bad taste in the history of Iran and the heart of the Iranian people and that has to do with the Islamic invasion of Persia in the 7th century and the consequent slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people by the hands of the Saracens. Somehow we have to cross that history and forgive, and learn to live in harmony. Of course the majority of Iranians love to live in harmony with Saudi Arabia.

We didn't lose him. He was not qualified for the job and ran away TWICE. The US and UK brought him back the first time in 1953 (operation Ajax and Boot), but could not or did not want to bring him back again a second time after the Islamic revolution in 1979.

Carter had close relations with Khomeini. Unfortunately, Shah’s biggest mistake was the talking/interviews he did, revealing things that he shouldn’t have. For this reason, he was removed.
They already decided to try and remove the Shah, so it didn't really matter what he said. He was a true king!

It is wrong to blame one person, many people and many events caused the revolution in Iran, there was a wave of revolutions in those years and Iran was also caught in this wave, even human rights organizations gave wrong reports, and the newspapers They were printing wrong reports, because of his election slogan, Carter pressured the Shah to give more freedom to the people, the Shah was sick, ignorant people who did not understand the meaning of modernity rioted, educated people who wanted Iran to be a republic due to their education in the West, but They didn't even know the meaning of democracy, they just wanted to imitate, the media that kept talking against the Shah, it was a whole media war against the Shah, and I still don't understand the reason, I don't know how a reporter sees 80 dead as 4000 people.
