Young struggling adults living in New York some suffering from drug addiction and aids, there’s more to it but I hope that sums it up a little. It took me a while to understand it but the older I got and then more I watched it I got what was going on!

I was lucky enough to get to see the original touring uk company and they were amazing, and it stuck with me. This song is a little bit bonkers but if you see tick tick boom on Netflix , which is the movie about the guy who wrote this who died really young in fact just as rent was about to debut on Broadway, you get a better understanding of this show and why he wrote it, and even this crazy song makes a little bit more sense then.It remains a favourite of mine and also my daughters now too. I try and introduce everyone to this show as so many people still haven’t heard of it if they are not totally theatre obsessed. I will say he was ahead of his time because even then , he talked of people becoming so obsessed with tv screens in front of them instead of the world around them, and he was spot on around that and that is partly why one of his musicals failed because people thought it was too out there and crazy!
the point of this scene is that even though maureen is a total hack with very little to say in terms of artistic merit (here it’s milked for laughs) but with an idea worth actually caring about (standing up to benny’s landlord bullshit) she can inspire people to riot for their rights.
This scene in particular I think was more about the hard work and hardships you go through in corporate America leaving you to only keep trying to climb your way up the ladder or go homeless, crazy, sick and die if you don't. Real opportunity is not being offered, just superficial bullshit. For example milk vs a diet coke.
I hated her voice and acting since high school musical but I am soooo impressed right now. She absolutely killed this song!! Vocally and and theatrically
1:54 The high note of “The Wizard and I” and “Just Walk Away”, a C5. I know Vanessa Hudgens is not really Elphaba material but she did good as Maureen 👍🏽
I used to hate this song and it’s still not my favorite but I LOVE the way Vanessa does it. She does it a bit shorter than Idina does AND she can actually belt the notes and not SCREAM like Idina! So hands down my favorite Maureen is Vanessa Hudgens

And then I forgot, then during covid I decided to watch the Live Broadway RENT. And if you think ^THIS^ is good???? IDINA MENZEL BLEW MY F’N MIND at this part. It was like rent was around a 9-10, then she steps on and takes it to like 77... Go watch Idina Menzel - Over the Moon LIVE

She does have a very powerful voice and can easily hit high notes, but the way she played the character of Maureen felt very childish and dramatic, compared to Idina Menzel's Edén Espinosa's or Nicole's Maureen.

Anyone know why Jordan Fisher peeks around the curtain between 1:02 - 1:04 ? I know that his character (Mark) is assisting her character's protest demonstration. But this just seems out of character. Since this was a filmed dress rehearsal - was Jordan just goofing around? It's incredibly random.

Vanessa Hudgens is one of my favs as she has been part of childhood. However, this isn't it bestie. Her vocals were really good and gave me the chills but I don't like how they changed it so much. I feel like she kind of over emphasized Maureen a bit. I feel like they could have picked a different Maureen. Who? I don't know but not her.

There's a vocal technique with wich you can breathe as you're belting, and therefore sing a note theoretically forever.
