This show helped keep me sane during junior high and high school. Just the ability to let things go for a while and just laugh at it all--was worth a ton.
When I was a cop on patrol, I would try to time my lunch break to go my my folk's house and watch this crazy show with my mom. This was before VCR, DVR or Tivo...if you missed it, you just plain missed it.....and darn it, on Fridays, when Gene was most often on, I did NOT want to miss it!
I friggin' loved this show as a kid. The Gene part was always my favorite part, him dancing while they threw stuff at him, Chuck dancing like a crackhead...it was all awesome. They need to release it all on a DVD set, I sure as heck would buy it!
This was on tv in England in the eighties & my brother & i would rush home from school to watch it. We would dance around the house to this! Gene is a god! I have just laughed all the way through....thanks so much for posting. Made me a kid again!
FACT: This is Eugene Patton, born April 25, 1932. He was a member of the stage crew. He was one of several amateur performers who would "warm up" & entertain the audience during commercial breaks. He danced to Milton Delugg's "Band with a Thug", while they played Count Basie's "Jumpin' at the Woodside" tune. UNFORTUNATELY, in 2001, he lost both legs due to complications from diabetes. He now walks with prosthetics & a cane.
So glad i was able to watch these shows growing up. all of us 70's kids have such a great sense of humor because of shows like this!!!! CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was a kid in the 70s, and I was a Gong Show junkie from the first time I watched it, and this was the moment in the show I always waited for. The whole scene turned into a full-blown party when Gene Gene came out and Chuck Barris went nuts. New Year's Eve in Times Square? Forget about it!
Whatever happened to this show!? I haven't seen it in ages!! I always had memories of this show when I was younger and when they were still playing the re-runs. I always found it hilarious when the judges would fight over the mallet and/or stand in front of the gong, trying to stop the other from gonging the gong, sometimes successful. And when Gene Gene came on, my mom would always crack up when Chuck Barry would dance. I wish this show was still on, I'd watch it everyday.

He was a favourite, as well as The Unkown Comic. There was another one, and I hve forgotten his name,who used to come out and sing, "I'm going to play my _____", and it would be a different instrument each time, and the judges would shout back, "What'cha gonna do?" each time he said it.
I stayed home from work sick a few years back and they had an 8 hour marathon of the Gong Show on the Game Show network. I seriously couldn't have picked a better day to stay home from work.

Chuck Barris was so dang funny. I never knew how funny he was when I was a kid. It's only now that I can watch this and appreciate how talented and hilarious he was on this show. They will never be able to strike gold like this again.

i remember watching this as a kid and loving it. i really do think this show was way ahead of its time (or any other time). chuck was such a likeable guy on the show, and this really does put a smile on your face. chuck and the audience are genuinely having a great time here. great stuff.
gene was basically a stageworker who would dance for the audience during commercial breaks...when the gong show went away he worked withthe Tonight show......i remember him in a Tonite show skit when he came out dressed as Papa Doc douvalier and directed the band.
The great days when we had Free TV and there was always something great to watch. Now we pay for TV and get over 100 channels with a bunch of crap to watch.
How fast does your blood start running and how big a smile pops on your face when that music starts ups lol!!!! That ways always the best part of the show was waiting to see if Gene was coming out. Kind of like a dog when his owner gets home!! God..the good old days!!

I hope that they rerun these episodes sometime soon (on any channel). I hear that there is a new Gong Show coming out this week (according to a commercial on the Comedy Network in Canada). I don't know if it will live up to our expectations. They have some big shoes to fill.
I love it when Chuck gets all excited when Gene Gene comes on: I do too, especially for the traditional 'throwing of the stuff' on the stage at him! That's hilarious! Pure comedy people, that's all it should have been seen as and it always shall be...
They would always do this before they went to commercial. I liked how they would milk this skit and how it would get more ridiculous with more garbage flying on stage. Total mayhem. I loved this stuff. I still love this stuff !!!!

It all started when Chuck told Chris Bearde he was thinking of producing a talent show. Chris suggested a talent show where most of the acts were bad. The rest is history.

Gene Gene and Chuckie's reaction were the ONLY reason I watched the Gong Show! I couldn't stop laughing when he came on, and I was so disappointed on the nights they didn't have him out there danging (which were usually the nights the Unknown Comic was on; if HE was on, you knew Gene Gene wouldn't be).
