    How interesting that this was based on a real person. Obviously, like all historical films, it takes some liberties but the fact that an admiral in the late 1700s actually DID take his mixed-race daughter to to England to be brought up as a free gentlewoman seems incredible to me. Mixed-race children weren't exactly unusual in those days - many white men had 'flings' with black women - but so many of them were just abandoned by their fathers. How heart-warming to know that there were some who did care.

    • @cancanjaker1620
      @cancanjaker1620 3 года назад +77

      But really, he takes her back to England and then dump her on his uncle and aunt. I say they are the ones who really brought her up and give her the freedom and status. The uncle even leaving her a fortune for her to live as a proper gentlewoman. The father probably only paid for that ride on the ship back to England.

      @@cancanjaker1620 are we talking about the real life Dido or the movie? Because in the movie, he does leave her with his uncle and aunt, and wanted to take her back when he returned, but he died. He leaves her his entire fortune, which was quite a lot, for her with specific instructions that she is to raised as a daughter of a nobleman and not some illegitimate love child. Her uncle and aunt were good people, so they honored her father's wishes, but it wasn't their idea to raise Dido as free noblewoman.

      ***** The thing is, in that era and even now , you being mixed with black instantly in society makes you black even though you're not entirely.You still have tighter curls and most importantly a different "color". A friend of mine who is born and raised in Britain, being child of a black mom and white dad, carries a British passport saying her ethnicity is black.. they dont care for mixed! its colored or non colored. So in that sense even though she's 50/50 she is still more black then she will ever be "white". not that it should matter, but thats the crooked world we live in. All you're non western "flaws" makes you different and if you watched the movie you can see how conflicted and confused she was with herself because of it. In this movie and in that time, I think she represents blacks and biracials greatly.

No one's talking about who's more racist, Humans are racist In general and the fact you had to point fingers at a certain race makes It even worse for your race and It makes you look even more racist than you are, you've basically proven nothing expect that you're Immature and Ignorant/arrogant, just sit down.

    Really like how this film about racism uses “Tom Felton and Matthew Goode” for the title, rather than Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the POC lead actress… stay classy.

      In movie trailers, they usually put the more well-known actors in the title, rather than the lead actors( who usually are not that famous), to bring more attention to the movie and more money.

      In reality, he is a fantasy. He history, he was Dido's husband and maybe a lawyer, or the film might just be portraying him as a lawyer. I'm not sure. In the film industry, he's an actor named Sam Reid.

    Of course they had to stray from the actual true account but her Aunt and Uncle who raised her loved her very much from the very beginning. Her uncle was one of the highest Judges at the time and fought for the abolishment of the English and west Indies slave trade. Although his ruling was unpopular he still fought for it. He raised his two nieces just the same and was proud of his mixed race niece.

He was also embarrassed of what people would think of him if they knew he liked a black girl. So sad in this day and age people still do things like this smh

      I agree. If only for the sake of seeing a cast of Good, but not really "Big Name" actors perform a period piece of such a dynamic subject matter. The story by itself seems captivating. The social commentary on race relations, gender relations, what is right, and love of all kinds... that will be worth seeing play out on screen. The sad truth is, it matters not what anyone looks like, there will ALWAYS be those who judge them by those looks. Stories like this may remind us to look beyond that, if we're lucky

    I just watched this movie on TV, never knew it existed and I don't usually watch this genre of films. But I must say It took my breath away. I'm glad that as humans we have come a long way in recognising that we are all part of a global family. The tragedy we fail to recognise at times is that "In Gods eyes all men are equal, In mans eyes those who are different are ignorant". Thanks' to those who are brave enough to speak out, and have a voice against injustice and inhumanity and support equality for others, even in some cases at great personal sacrifice to themselves. Let us all follow suit..
