I am a former American soldier. I want to personally attest to the odd, but extremely effective moral boost that singing brings. I can only imagine how much more amplified this effect would be, in the naval sector during the days of old. Excellent work!
It wasn’t just for morale, songs were used for timing synchronization amongst the crew. That’s also why armies would have drummers on the field, to keep timing for the troops. It’s also why soldiers are made to belt out during marching orders.
Sailor here. Yep, they're for synchronizing effort. Most shanties are either "hauling" or "capstan". Shanties like Roll Boys and Drunkin' Sailor are haulers used to aid in collective pulling events like raising sail, hauling in jackstays, or straining bow, stern, and spring lines. Randy Dandy-O is a capstan shanty used for an event that requires a constant effort like weighing anchor where the anchor chain in on a capstan.
