      Well... most of you are right in that us British would normally refer to the whole clocktower as Big Ben. Its easier that way. Its only when we get into a pub quiz that we get fussy! The tower - originally had no real name except 'The Clock Tower' then became named St Stephens Tower but went through a name change into the Elizabeth Tower to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 2012. The tower contains many bells that ring out part of the Westminster Chime every 15 minutes . The short part (a quarter of the chime) will ring out at 15minutes past the hour. Half the chime at 30 minutes, and three quarters of the tune at 45 minutes past (or a quarter to). You can google 'Westminster Chimes' to hear it and it consists of only 4 notes: G sharp, F sharp, E and B. Only on the full hour will you hear the full tune or chime followed by the Hour Bell which is known as Big Ben. You can make up your own theory about why it became known as Big Ben because its a bit vague. Popular theory is taken from Sir Benjamin Hall who oversaw the construction. Good job his name wasn't Richard!! John.

    Everyone calls it Big Ben, nobody call it Elizabeth Tower. Call it Big Ben.

    • @grapeman63
      @grapeman63 3 года назад +2

      Before the tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower it was known, colloquially, as St. Stephen's Tower as it was built on the site of the former medieval St. Stephen's Chapel which was destroyed during the fire in 1834(?). Officially, it was simply known as the Clock Tower as there is another tower over the main entrance to Parliament, some distance from the Chapel site, that had been named St. Stephen's Tower. This second tower is quite small, squat and insignificant and was not built until after the Clock Tower and so the colloquial name for the Clock Tower - St. Stephen's Tower - held sway. The bell in the Clock Tower has been called Big Ben since its founding and is a descendant of the medieval naming tradition for church bells throughout the country.
      The Clock Tower only came to be called Big Ben about half a century later by conflation with the bell. The purist would always insist on calling it by it's proper name.

      @@darrellpowell6042 When I was a young sprog I, and all my friends and classmates, knew the tower by its colloquial name - St. Stephen's Tower (I think it was in a Children's book of facts) and knew that only the bell was called Big Ben. The tower has been known, colloquially, by this name since its foundations were laid in 1835. Its namesake was not built for another decade. Calling the tower Big Ben is very much a 20th century occurance so I'm not sure that you can claim it as a tradition.

      @darrellpowell6042 3 года назад

      @@grapeman63 The 20th century is the entire 100 years of the 1900's to 2000.
      Big Ben is MORE so a tradition as its very much known world wide as Big Ben. JPS even says so, he's American.
      Big Ben the nickname is more known than the other names for longer and therefore a traditional name.
      Traditions are what?
      Definition:
      the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way.
      So yes I'm correct traditional the nickname of Big Ben is more so known and passed on by generations of the nickname, hence the world knows the clock tower as Big Ben.

    • @grapeman63
      @grapeman63 3 года назад

      @@darrellpowell6042 I'm not disagreeing with you. I am fully aware that internationally the tower is often, incorrectly, referred to as Big Ben. The UK parliament insists that every book that mentions the tower as Big Ben contains a rider to clarify that they are referring to the tower, the clock and the bell since only the Great Bell (there are actually 5 bells in the tower) is traditionally known as Big Ben, possibly after the Clerk of Works, Sir Benjamin Hall, who was in office when the bell was raised.
      Incidentally, newspaper reporting of the proceedings of the House of Commons was always styled as "News from St. Stephen's Hall" as this is where the HoC sat. This continued long after the HoC moved to their current chamber. This further reinforced the tower as St. Stephen's Tower in the perception of the general public. You could make the argument that the tower was known as:
      Officially: The Clock Tower (now Elizabeth Tower)
      Traditionally: St. Stephen's Tower
      Nickname: Big Ben.

    Ed Sheeran is like 'Marmite' in his home country-you either like him or you don't-Personally I don't care either way,as I see him harken back to the 1970s era singer-songwriters like James Taylor,Joni Mitchell,Jackson Browne,etc.

    Comparing Rolling Loud to Glastonbury is Like Comparing a Cheeseburger to a steak!
    Glastonbury is the most iconic music festival in the world and to headline Glastonbury is the pinnacle.
    You really should do you your research before making such a typical arrogant uneducated American opinion thinking everything in America is bigger.
    I'll take it easy this time because I understand you are making the effort to learn but Glastonbury is common knowledge.
    Anyway For some reason I do enjoy watching your videos so.keep up the good work but research something before you make a judgement opinion.
    All good in the hood.

    I'm a Brit and I don't know about other American versions of British comedy but I do know that I can't stand the British version of The Office, except for Rickey Gervais in it, he's brilliant, but the rest make me cringe. Of the American version I've only seen what's on RUclips but I find I don't cringe watching that version. Trouble is the one full episode I found I was a bit lost as to what was going on, but the acting and everything else was much better than the British version.

    Best universities are in the USA, not the UK. The USA has the top three universities. Number four is British, and it isn't Oxford or Cambridge.

    if a British band "breaks" America they are global .... these global bands and all the hardcore definitive artists play at our festivals ( you are talking about eurythmics , queen etc etc ) .
    If you want to know what american artist are like ( and to be honest are superb ) but you have to look at BLUR a fine British act that could not break America ... but they released a "piss take " song ie: titled "song 2 "
    a song about absolutely nothing = gibberish... and it was a hit

    Big Ben ISN'T the clock. It's the name of the bell inside the clock tower.

    Sorry to have to correct you but Big Ben is actually a bell, not the clock. The correct name for the clock is the Elizebeth Tower Clock, though it is also referred to as the Dent Clock, after its maker and sometimes as the Great Clock. Big Ben is the largest of the bells in the tower and chimes the hour count.

    Yes to theatre, and of course playing bad guys. I think they are right about slang, and it's beyond dispute that Britain basically invented the idea of competitive sports, and created nearly every one I order that others could beat us at them. History might be contentious, everywhere has history, but from a tourist perspective, I think thats true. Comedy, well most nations have it, even Germany, but I think we are best. When it comes to literature, we'll we have the advantage in writing in English, but so do Americans, and while there are great American writers, there is no equivalent to Shakespeare or Dickens. As for music festivals, I suppose the test is this, is an American familiar with Glastonbury? I have only ever heard of one American festival, Woodstock, and that was I the 60s. American festivals are not discussed in the media over here.
    I would quibble with some, firstly American universities may not be as old, but the best of them are actually more highly reguarded than Oxford and Cambridge. The other is actually the number one, presuming we are talking about popular music, not classical, then it's a contest between the US and UK, I think I would give that one to the US. They invented, Jazz, Swing, Rock and Roll, Blues, Country, Mo Town and Rap. I think what we did was very often take those forms and transform them into something different. Perhaps it would be fair to say the UK rules when it comes to unique performers.
