I'm so happy for you and your mom about her health. My dad was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018 and then again in 2020, but is healthy and on the road to recovery thanks to a stem cell transplant. Cancer is a scary thing, so I'm glad your mom can begin to heal and live her life! Also congratulations on graduating! What an achievement, you should be very proud.
Your thesis paper sounds really interesting, I would love reading it if you're willing to release it! ✨ And the fact that some people don't get how colonization works and how people are affected by it is just mind-boggling... Early congrats, Kat! I too walked a semester early due to finishing up my minor. I also relate so much to your paper topic. My mother had to pay and take a DNA test just to find out our heritage/tribe. Being able to know that information alone without doing so is a privilege.

Sometimes I also think about this and feel anger about how colonizations wiped out so many great things from this planet. For example, I’m Mexican, so I speak Spanish, but that’s not even my people’s language. It’s the colonizer’s language. I understand your frustration

Ok my skin is like white right so every body thinks I'm white like in elementary school I was trying to explain to this one kid I am Hispanic but he wouldn't except it. Omg what you said about colonisation! I am from Cyrpus (the unoccupied part) and my country has belonged to someone else for CENTURIES. At one point in history, we were passed on from the Turks to the English, as if we are a bag of chips... Now, I am studying at a uni in England and the IGNORANCE. People just take my identity as a cypriot so lightly and people get OFFENDED when I accidentally switch language because god forbid I dare to be bilingual... Don't tell me colonisation is a thing of the past when half my country is still occupied by the Turks (i know we are not completely innocent but you cannot blame the people of my country for the actions of one extremist group). Who is going to tell my grandparents, my grandmother who can't visit the house her own father built, my mother and her parents who had to hide in basements and under tables while they were bombing my country, who had to flee to England for safety, who is going to tell my father who watched a soldier being shot outside his window at the age of 5, who will tell my brother and my father and my cousins and uncles who have to go through compulsory military training and have to actually fight in a war if the turks decide to attack (and in that case, Cyprus has not chance of winning, meaning the men in my family will die)? Who is going to tell them that colonisation is a thing of the past? Now that the Turks are threatening to take over the rest of my country? Who is going to tell them?
I'm so sorry to read this. I'm from Turkey and had no idea Cypriots from the Southern side felt this way. I've never been a nationalist person, nor was I brought up that way but unfortunately, our history lessons in school are filled with exaggerations and tales of victory as if we did not do anything wrong in history and every war we fought we just. Nor has our governments ever taken responsibility. As a result, many Turkish people are not familiar with the struggles of the minorities living here, nor the way we are perceived in Cyprus.

We are not entirely innocent but I believe that Turkey's actions were too harsh, especially since the North is still occupied so many years later. It's so devastating to know that neither of us are being educated with both sides of the story.
