My provider, the VA just fitted me for my first wheelchair. I told the guy fitting me that I wanted to be able to bowl using it, so easy remove arm rests, brake handles that don't go outward, and most important, an easy to remove and replace hand rim.
I get the wheelchair, and go to the bowling alley with my brother who already bowls with a wheelchair, can easily remove his rim. Mine was like the first one shown in the video, and cannot be removed with the tire in place. To make things easier for me, they gave me solid tires that will never go flat, which makes removing the hand rim easily, impossible. Who in their right mind designed the wheel this way. Most likely I'll be told that they will only replace broken or worn out parts, and this wheelchair has only one mile on its odometer, it's that new.

Hello Rich! Those are great ideas going into getting a wheelchair that'll work daily as well as for your bowling. Unfortunately, the cylindrical handrim tabs are so common and most handrims require the removal of the tire and tubes, or in your case the inserts are easily removed as they are more of a permanent placement. We hope you found a happy medium and have been bowling great!

I have to get new handrims and not sure what size to get. I have 24" wheels. Does that mean I get 24" handrims, or would it be the 22" to be exact to the handrail size?

Hello Sara! You would want the same size handrim for the size of your wheel. The 22" wheels are often for a shorter individual or children's wheelchair. However, the other importance to ordering new handrims are the tabs that connect the handrim to the wheel. Most commonly, wheels are 6-tabs and then you have an option of short tab (handrim closer to wheel/tire) or long tab placement (larger gap between wheel/tire). I hope that answers your question and please respond if you have any other questions.

Is it possible to attach handrims to a wheelchair without handrims, assuming it is the right design otherwise?

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand. You can replace handrims with the same style (most common is 6 tab) and same size handrims. Can you please specify the "wheelchair without handrims?" Not sure if you mean to attach handrims to handcycle or bicycle wheels that don't have handrim mounts?
