The MINI is built in the Cowley works in Oxford which was the Morris factory. It is now called Plant Oxford. The Triumph Acclaim, Maestro, Montego, MG RV8, Rover 600, Rover 800 and early Rover 75s were also built in Cowley. Jon Coupland's 75 was one such Cowley-built 75.

A previous applicant for the position of Mrs Miller had one of these. I liked it. We went to see Jack Dee in it and it’s a good job we did because if we’d gone in my car we wouldn’t have fit into the only parking space near the theatre and we might have missed Jack Dee. I once gave it a good old clean in return for getting my front garden weeded and I definitely think I got the better deal there. My mum also wanted one, but whilst we thought she was faffing around and not buying a car she went and bought a not-very-good Mercedes B Class instead. She should have bought one of these and I told her so but she didn’t seem bothered, which is fair enough. When I had an Audi TT she told me that although it was very nice and all that it was a silly car and I should get something easier for her to get in and out of and I didn’t so I can’t complain. I’d like to have a red one and a yellow one with chequered flag roofs like the Scalextric cars, when racing cars at home meant having to assemble some wonky track, hook it up to the mains and fling the cars off under the sofa or into the dogs face rather than Gran Turismo on the big telly. Did anyone else find that once the brushes had worn it was almost impossible to replace them properly and the car effectively became scrap? I had a red XR3 Scalextric car that was my favourite and when its brushes wore out I was very sad.

I own an original mini and bought my son one of these four years ago as a non runner. A second hand 140k engine and 4 years later it’s nearly as fun to drive as the original without the worry of the dreaded rust. Cheap motoring

I’ve had my 2006 R50 Cooper Works for nearly 7 years now and I doubt I’ll ever sell it. We’ve had a few of the R50’s successor, the R56 and it felt like a cost cutting exercise. Reliability only comparable to my Range Rover too. I’m pleased to see more MGR enthusiasts with an open mind to them. We’ve also got a ‘new’ Fiat 500. In my opinion, two of the only modern cars to capture retro design perfectly and make it a commercial success!

When the 'new' Mini first appeared I was determined not to like it, but then I drove one for a while it completely changed my opinion. Nowadays this version looks small and neat compared to the subsequent Minis. Visited the Mini plant at Cowley in the Marina for the club National in 2011. Funny to think that my 75 was also built there.
Allegroman is becoming a very welcome regular guest star isn't he? 😊

I worked at Longbridge, and I can 100 percent confirm that I saw the pre production Mini in the flesh. We were in new model introduction on the returnable packaging side. The new factory was near Cab 1. Should have stayed at Longbridge.

Not for me really. I loved the late Rover Minis so much. I know they were deeply flawed but that is the charm and they are one of my dream classics. For some reason the R50 just never appealed to me. Always seemed a bit soft and dare I say girly. I do like the newer BMW Minis though. Had a Countryman for a weekend and I thought it was a good looking modern car. I go into a Mini showrooom sometimes and would quite like one. 😊

I am sorry but I don't like the dash design of these.
I hate to say it would be improved by making it more boring and more German, they probably did the right thing with it but I couldn't get on with it
Love the guarded switches though even though they feel so cheap and plasticky

    • @skylined5534

The original Mini should have been replaced by the 1970s, at the latest but BL/BMC or whoever never had the money.
The crash integrity of that car was totally unacceptable by the 1980s or so.

🎶Allegroman, All-eg-ro-man, coming to the yard in a 'mini 🎵', oh yes, he's got another car for sale .... '🎶
I enjoyed this video! Anything with Allegroman's beaming smile is sure to have the 'feelgood' factor!
On Sunday teatimes I like to watch an old episode of the darts quiz 'Bullseye'. Jim Bowen was the original presenter. The series was remade in the 2000s with Dave Spikey as presenter to a lukewarm response. If only they had Allegroman instead I am sure it would have been a great success!😀
I've driven these 'mini' cars and while they do drive quite well, I'm afraid I don't like them at all! Mustard is right that the early cars are the least worst; BMW have successfully made each subsequent edition increasingly hideous!
Is the Mini R50 a classic car? Last year I was watching a live classic car auction when one of these came along as the next lot. I'm afraid that I turned off the stream in dismay. Whatever anyone's thoughts on the virtues or otherwise, to my mind the R50 will never be a classic - nor will the 'new' VW Beetle or Fiat 500.
These are quite popular cars and I am sure that Allegroman will have no difficulty in making a sale. However, here is a question to ponder: Given a choice between this and an equally nice condition Rover 25 of the same year, which one ...? Captain, how about a comparison video?🤔

    • @ProjectNigel
      @ProjectNigel  3 месяца назад

There would be something interesting about that comparison, although the 25 actually feels quite big next to it.
