  • At the Paris Air Show 2023, KNDS (formely known as Nexter) and Thales unveiled a new option for their RAPIDFire naval gun system. The new option consists in the addition of a pod (and radar system) to deploy 4 LMM missiles.
    =====================
    According to Olivier Lequeux, Turret marketing manager at KNDS, the new missile option is "a normal step in our roadmap for this system".
    The LMM missile is based on a laser beam riding system. "In our roadmap it will be a solution to add a new guided ammunition in the future" added Lequeux. The two companies also added a radar which brings the advantage to be able to engage in all conditions. The LMM bring more range to the RAPIDFire: The missiles have the capabilities to engage targets up to 7 KM.
    There is a lot of request internationally for such system combining missiles plus cannon because the combination covers a large spectrum of threats.
    The first two RAPIDFire turrets have been delivered to the French Navy to be fitted on the new Jacques Chevallier-class supply vessel (known as BRF in the French Navy). The frist at-sea test campaign is schedule for September and October.
    Designed to protect platforms from low-level air threats, including drones, RAPIDFire can autonomously and automatically acquire, identify and destroy a threat using target designation data provided by a combat management system. With a ready rack of 140 rounds of ammunition, corresponding to about 30 interceptions, the system offers effective firepower against drones and swarms of drones, avoiding attrition of surface-to-air missiles in the event of a saturation attack.
    According to KNDS, RAPIDFire is the only system capable of defeating all types of threats, including personal watercraft, free-floating mines, ships, loitering munitions, unmanned aerial systems, fighter jets, attack helicopters and missiles at ranges of up to 4,000 metres, thanks to automatic real-time selection of different types of ammunition,
    According to Thales, LMM is a low cost, lightweight, precision strike, missile, which has been designed to be fired from tactical platforms including fixed or rotary winged UAV s and surface platforms. The system is designed to provide a rapid reaction to a wide range of the surface threats from wheeled or tracked vehicles, towed artillery or static installations; naval threats from small ships and fast inshore attack craft and an air threat from light aircraft.

    That's more like it. So as of now, RapidFire is clearly ahead of US Bushmaster IV. Also ahead of Bofors40 (despite faster firing rate) or at least, both are at par to each other, with attached LMM compensating for slower firing rate. Wondering what's next: perhaps option to integrate Mistral

      @@gregs7562Yeah. With rumours that CT40 ammo is hugely expensive you would have thought that UK would want to try to drive down unit cost by increasing volume with Ajax about to go into service. And even worse I heard a rumour yesterday that the MoD did actually purchase 500 CT40 for the now cancelled upgrade of the Warrior 30mm and might be about to sell those off. Yes, they would obviously need naval mounts, totally different targeting etc but at least a RapidFire order with Thales could have had the cannon itself as a government supplied component. And there are lots of other places in the Navy where those CT40 could be put to good use - T23 could do with a 30mm to 40mm update especially given it doesn’t have Phalanx and is going through a Sea Ceptor upgrade so could be done at the same time and then cross-decked to T32 if that happens. River Batch 2 could be another. Heck, if 500 CT40 really are about to be sold off that could upgrade every 30mm in the RN & RFA about 6 times over.

      @@julianfp1952 the 40 mm CTA uses Rafales of 4 shells, if for you 4 shells is expensive??? and the quantity of shells fired does not particularly mean more precise! with a burst of 4 shells, the possibility of destruction is close to 100% success! a Phalanx cannon uses a huge amount of ammunition, thousands of shells are fired! for a certainly very high cost! better to use 4 40 mm Rapidfire shells, it's more economical!! a reminder, the more shells we fire, even the cheaper each, the barrel tube will have to be changed more frequently, and there, economy is no longer relevant!!

      @@LOLOVAL-os3pq I wasn’t comparing to Phalanx but to other 40mm such as Bofors which with 3P would I assume need a similar number of rounds for a successful intercept. BTW, in case you misread it, my comment was expressing disappointment that RN hasn’t adopted 40CTAS.

    That radar doesnt look like it stands up to much of a battering from a wet foredeck. Maybe not one for a small ship main gun mount then. Interesting if the sight unit can designate for Starstreak as well as LMM might address some of the cannons limitations against antiship missiles and provide some CIWS function.

      @@lukeallison3713 Millenium is basically CIWS already the problem with that gun is it’s single feed and not much for anti surface if it’s using the AHEAD rounds. Maybe the Martlet/LMM missile pack that the RN trialled with their 30mm ASCG mount to add a bit of surface punch or the 4-shot APKWS launcher from MADIS??

    • @SteveJones-om6ks
      @SteveJones-om6ks Год назад

      The Arafura originally had a Leonardo Marlin40 mount. Likely that would have been just as suitable.
      This system fires specialised case-telescoped ammunition which is, supposedly, quite expensive and not really needed for anything the Arrafura will do. Australia doesnt use the LMM missile system either so that would be a whole new system to have to work up on.
      The 25mm mounts that will come over from the decommissioning hulls will probably be just as useful for the constabulary tasks that the Arrafura will do though. Remember its an OPV not a warship.

      @@SteveJones-om6ks The arafura's are going to be upgraded to do more then constabulary tasks. The evolved capes and the Australian border force marine unit will be doing more of that work.

    • @SteveJones-om6ks
      @SteveJones-om6ks Год назад

      @@carisi2k11 It’s not an upgrade to make an OPV into a warship. It’s a complete redesign. A warship has design elements that a simple patrol ship doesn’t. A warship is crewed larger so that stations can be manned in shifts 24/7 when at action stations. An OPV doesn’t have that requirement so doesn’t have the spaces or stores to support a large crew. The Arrafuras aren’t warships.

      the English do what they want, as they have made so many mistakes in several areas: purchase of the F35, Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers, nuclear-powered submarines, Eurofighter!! They have problems with all these projects! and the Bofors 40 mm is an anti-aircraft defense gun, the Rapidfire CTA 40 mm is a ground, air and sea gun! so, absolutely nothing identical, yet another English error!!

    IIRC I thought one of the British outfits was also integrating Martlet in one their smaller Naval RWS. 2 or 3 tubes IIRC.
    That makes sense IMHO. It adds bigly to the capabilities of these small RWS at little cost. Also much more cost effective vs. Loitering Munitions and small boats.

      MSI have integrated it with the DS30M mount, called Seahawk Sigma. Concept started with 7 rounds, tested with 5 round and the settled design uses the same 4 round launcher as this concept. Trialled on a RN Type 23 in 2021.
