Your first book put me in mind of another similarly titled book, The Long Walk by Polish soldier Slavomir Rawicz, a true story about his escape from a Soviet labor camp with 6 other prisoners and their trek through Siberia, the Gobi desert, Tibet and the Himalayas finally to India. It's an amazing story of terrible hardship and loss and perseverance. There was another soldier who said that it was his story and not the author's, but whoever lived it went through an unbelievable experience. You might enjoy that one.
I agree for the Secret Commonwealth that it was fun to read it on the backdrop of the author's low-key crisis of faith. I found bits like the one you read out were a fun window into the old psyche while other bits just sort of wandered. Sounds like it might be worth it to pick up the Field Guide to the Little People for more along those lines.
