  • World Horse Welfare relies on your charitable donations to help ease the suffering of horses worldwide, 365 days a year: bit.ly/3joiAkW
This film, presented by World Horse Welfare Patron, Suzanne Dando looks into the work the charity undertakes daily to help horses around the world. Whether rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses in the UK, educating owners of working horses in the developing world, working with governing bodies of horse sport or influencing policy for better legislation to protect horses.
Founded in 1927 by Ada Cole to end the abuse of British horses destined for slaughter in Europe, the charity was formerly named the International League for the Protection of Horses. Nine decades on and World Horse Welfare continues to be the voice of invisible horses all over the world, from those who suffer neglect and welfare problems in silence across the UK to the many thousands of working horses ignored by Governments and policymakers, to those subjected to the torture of traveling hundreds of miles across Europe to slaughter.

I wonder how its going this year with the virus..The bears in Romania are facing death by starvation because there are no visitors to the rehabilitation centre after lifetimes in circuses...Its just heartbreaking

In the U.S., still chaingcwild horses with planes and trucks, exhausting & terrifying them, tying them to tires, loading them up & shovelling them into crowded corrals before ramping them into huge transport trucks to meat factories for dogs

The horse in Central America also has a terrible top line. The spine sticking out is accident waiting to happen. These folks should use donkey or mule. They are stronger than a horse, more agile and need less quality feed to maintain condition.

The biggest problem is that there are too many horses. That is same in the US. Way too many people buying horses for their children, not realizing the expense and time involved, an then when that child loses interest or outgrows the pony, the horse is sold onto the next person, usually taking it away from the herd it is boned with. Finally, the horse gets old and has no more value, so it is left alone with minimal care in some lonely corral or sold at auction to be sent for slaughter. There needs to be a drastic reduction in horse breeding to cut the numbers down, along with easier and cheaper euthanasia options so people don't just hold onto them because it's cheaper than giving old horses a kind end. A vigorous campaign to geld stallions just the way the neutering program for dogs has had a big impact.
