Viikate is an amazing and unique band combining Finnish 60's style iron wire rock with metal. Their every music video is also like this with great deadpan humour. They have made a tribute album to Motörhead with songs translated to Finnish. It's pretty great.
There's an old Finnish saying: 'If booze, tar and sauna won't help (you), the disease is fatal.' = 'Jos ei viina, terva ja sauna auta, tauti on kuolemaksi'. They changed sauna to hauta (grave), and don't really speak of how to help. I mean they mention the word help, but no real advice is given.
There's a double pun in the song title, I think. Viina, terva ja sauna > Viina, terva & hauta, and also viina & tervahauta = tar grave: tar kiln; ancient method for producing wood tar, and pontikka (moonshine, booze) as a by-product... :)
Actually met Kaarle Viikate (the singer) at the local record fair a few weeks ago where we were both selling, he was selling some rare Viikate records. Of course I bought some, been a big fan of Viikate since my young teens. Love the melancholy and melodies.
The songs name translates to Boooze, Tar and Grave, and its kinda reference to this old Finnish saying "If it cant be healed with booze, tar (cigarettes) and sauna, the disease is fatal" They only changed the sauna to hauta (grave) The chorus says: If booze, tar and grave wont help to split the darkness ember fades, ashes tarnish, the cold finds its way home like frost to home, ashes thick
The fence was an electric fence meant for keeping cattle from escaping. Hence when the first guy peed on it he had these weird expressions when the electric current shocked him. The second guy who drank the gasoline ended up blowing himself up for the same reason. Finnish humour at it's best I suppose.
Kouvostoliitto, also known as Kouvola, is a sister Soviet city of a another city known as Chernobyl/Pripyat. Just look at their comparison and you will notice, it is hard to tell each other apart. Also if you know bit of Finnish, you might notice that Kouvostoliitto is combination of Kouvola and Neuvostoliitto (Soviet Union).
Have to add that the transition in video from bikers to "hikers" is because in Kouvostoliitto everything is like anywhere else but a little bit worse. Thats why bikes turn to mopeds and girls turn to men... Band is from Kouvola which came Kouvostoliitto i guess when surrounding "cities" joined to city of Kouvola few years back. I'm not sure about that sistercity theory but they have some similarities. At least they both have areas where normal people wouln't live on...
On second part, place where they drive into is Kouvostoliitto, nickname of city of Kouvola, a concrete jungle which absorbs or nullifies everything that enters there.
Oh man, thank you for this! They were my no. 1 band for a long time. They have also full cover album of Mötörhead songs translated to finnish. Can recommend Killed by death (kuollut kuin hengetön). Video of the song is also parody of the original Mötörhead video so there's a double header for you.
There's a really old proverb in Finland: If tar, liquor and sauna does not bring help, the decease is going to kill you. The song's name translates as liquor, tar and tomb and i'm really not even trying to draw some connections with the lyrics and the video. Think they just wanted to make a cool video for the song. The song kinda paints a picture of the Finnish peoples dark mentality and our dark sense of humor too. In my opinion at least it does. Think you guys could get a new view on the songs, if you would google up the lyrical translation after watching the video and hearing a song on a foreign language. Could be kinda cool to see you have the first impressions and then see how they differ after seeing whan the song was about.
That was fun video to make, running in the woods with burning smoke bombs etc :D But waiting that lake to stabilize after we got bikes there felt like eternity.
It's been 3 years now, but if you still care: at 9:00 he's pissing at an electric fence. and because his piss is loaded with booze it causes an explosion. ;-)
The fence that he pissed on was a standard electric fence. There is an old Finnish saying "Kuse sähköpaimeneen." or "Kuse muuntajaan." which means, "Go piss on an electric fence/transformer", and if you do that, you will not be having a good time. It's used pretty much the same as "Go fuck yourself." Finnish language is awesome.

You mean bikes get better? Because those bikes in last part are legendary Finnish Tunturi "Pappa" bikes. One in minth conditions will cost you several thousand euros. Pappa means old man or granpa in Finnish. I used to have one those when I was teen. And they keep running with almoust anything, like alchohol, oil based paints etc...
Aye, you got the literal translation nailed. Just as in any other place with stories of Death the scythe is his attribute, so the name of the band is ominous - and while the music might sound kind of upbeat the lyrics are often pretty dark if you stop to think about them. Viina, terva ja hauta - that's almost but not quite an old Finnish saying (hauta should be sauna). "Jos ei viina, terva ja sauna auta tauti on kuolemaksi", my translation "if strong alcohol, tar and sauna doesn't help the sickness will result in death". Old folk medicine, that is. Alcohol is pure, tar was thought to have healing properties and the sauna was both a place for cleaning yourself and the place where you'd practice medicine.
There are so many Finnish cultural references in that video and in the lyrics of that song.. It's interesting or impossible to know how that comes across :)
The first part of the video is inspired by Motorhead and US bikers, and the second half is weird black humor/ spoofing Finish cliches. The fence is an electric fence, something found in rural areas to keep cows in fields.
8:45 He pissed on electric fence and gas that he drank exploded because wee was gas. Maybe that female became more uglier because they were getting sober up and every female looks pretty when you are drunk enough.
Kouvostoliitto is Finnish version of Neuvostoliitto (Soviet Union) We have nicknamed a Finnish town called Kouvola to Kouvostolitto ( which would be Kouvola Union in English)
Viikate is so Finnish that I doubt anyone else will get them. Perhaps the melody... It's my favourite band but I have a Finnish taste. Edit: the genre is Death schlager :)

Also local band for me, good as finnish rock can go (except peer günt is better, kinda local also)
'Vee-cah-teh' teh like in Portuguese - so maybe: Vícatê? Viina terva went right. Spanish vowels are even closer, meaning keep the vowels the same in every position, and it's Finnish. Viikate means scythe.
If you want to learn how to pronounce Finnish it is really easy. Once you learn the sounds it is simple. It is pronounced exactly as it is written, because the language is old, but the written language is really young. If there are double vocals, it means it is a long vocal, if it is one vocal it is short vocal. So Viikate, has to i:s. Therefore the i is long. So not Vikate, but Viiiiiiikate. Long I!

As for the rest, Viikate is really an underrated band for me.

@@Aurinkohirvi The consonant uttered at the end of the word, even though there is no consonant at all... could it be in words like osoite since this word historically had a consonant at the end?
