I think his performance as Kiryu is okay really, but him as Kiryu _doing karaoke_ doesn’t work for me at ALL. I mean next to Kuroda though, that’s to be expected.

Yeah, Kuroda is an iconic voice actor, no one could replace him, Yong had so much pressure on him but he delivered an acceptable performance imo.

Power ballad without power. Like a tiger drop after 10 years in the joint.
Why did they change the lyrics, like, completely???
Making a translated song singable when the languages are very different is a though job...
Because it has to actually fit the melody and rhythm, and a direct translation wouldn't even stay on beat due to difference in word length.
Just to really make sure anyone else wondering the same thing understands why the lyrics had to be different, here's an example:
The first two lines, Romanized:
Dore dake fukaku aishitara
Ore ni furimuitekureru no kai
--
The beat for that part is:
DadadaDA, dadada-DA~ da da DA~
Dada-dada da da da dada-dadada~
--
Now, the lyrics from Gaiden and then the direct translation of the original Japanese:
Can you tell me just how far I have to go
To have you and your angel smile all to myself?
How much deeper must I love you
For you to look back towards me
--
Trying to fit the latter, translated lyrics into that beat sounds terrible any way you slice it. You can do it just like you can cram just about anything into a beat if you really try, but it'll sound terrible. Instead they had a songwriter look at the original lyrics, the translation, and come up with something that both fits the mood of the original composition and at least sounds somewhat pleasant.
