We definitely have a housing problem in AZ. The prices are outrageous and the wages & jobs aren't matching with housing prices. We're headed for a housing crisis. I weep for the youth who don't have homes, equity or the decent jobs to even buy a home here. The disparities and wealth gaps are getting bigger and bigger.
That is a widespread problem. I live in a small town, there is a big gap between the wealthy people & the not so wealthy people.
Most people in this town can't afford to pay more than $500. per month. There are people asking $600. monthly to rent & live in an RV, run down trailer rentals, homes that could easily be condemned.
It keeps the wealthy people wealthy while keeping the not so wealthy living in poverty.
Thankyou for sympathizing for us younger generation. I feel like our concerns about this issue are always pushed aside by older generations claiming prices going up by this much are just the norm, so hearing a older person advocate for us and validate our worries is comforting

I thought I would have a place to stay. That didn't happen. A woman in the small town I was in owns almost the entire town. When I first got there, she gave me her business card, told me to call her if I needed anything. I called her to see if she had any vacant properties.
The only one she had was a run-down trailer. She had been housing migrant construction workers for a few years. It was only $300. per month. She was willing to trust me to give her a $100. security deposit when I got paid again. She also allowed me to have my 2 trained, clean, well-behaved Yorkies.
OMG!
It smelled like beer, vomit & a few other gross things. I was cleaning it for 2 weeks before the stench was gone. I lived there for 6 months before I was financially able to move closer to where I was working.
Although it was in much better condition, I did some touch up paint, fixed 2 ceiling fans. I was so broke I couldn't afford to pay attention.
When I moved out she wouldn't give my security deposit back. She told me that she had to fumigate because I had 2 little dogs.
I went to the trailer 2 weeks after moving out as the new tenants had some of my pony express mail.
The tenants told me that the landlady had told them that I had improved it so much & my dogs were so clean that she didn't need to fumigate.

I had to let it go, it pissed me off, yet, I just had to move forward.
I'm very fortunate to have moved into a cottage that was newly remodeled, really good landlords who live next door & are quick to fix anything that breaks, though that has only happened twice in the 6 years I have lived here.
These people didn't know me. The fact that I'm a military vet really helped. It's only $600. per month for a 2 BR, 1 large BA, large opened floor plan for kitchen, living room, dining area. It also has a walled in front porch, 3 covered places for parking.
I'm very grateful the landlords trusted me. I feel very fortunate.
@@plusultra234 My concern is for all those young families. Many still live at home because of these ridiculous rents. Homes are becoming unattainable and having an entire population that rents will only hurt the communities because they'll never be able to build equity. Both my kids (one is 30 and one is 26) can't afford to buy a home, and rents won't let them save for a down payment... I'm scared for them.. for all of you. I wish we could fix this.

The pandemic made the Phoenix area and most of Texas expensive as all heck its so frustrating. To buy a house I'll need to go back to work and my husband makes good money but what's out her for what we originally wanted to spend is horrible we live in the DFW

CONGRATULATIONS TO PHOENIX, for finally catching up with California's prices on rent. It would take me renting out the rooms in this BEAUTIFUL house to 3 full time employees just to pay the rent and utilities.We still would be out of 900 a month EACH, just to cover rent and utilities NOT including food. Ya, it's NOW getting down to the nitty gritty. I don't care HOW much they want. BUY your own! The ONLY way to be free is for some unforeseen hidden devine intervention. These landlords in Phoenix are out for BLOOD, off the SWEAT of your brow!

When I saw the alley way I was nope, nope, nope. Murders, dead bodies and people watching my house while I slept came to mind. Then there's a homeless person sleeping in the shed attached to the house?!? Oh HELL no!! And $2500 for the privilege? Uh-huh.
I agree about the alleyway. In my neighborhood they gated them off. Only the fire departments, city workers, and homeowners have keys to gain access.

The rule I've always known for Tempe is stay south of the 60. The farther south you go, the nicer it gets.
North of the 60 isn't bad if you know where to go and know it's a college town.
Also, the city of Tempe has amazing resources for their residents and property keeps it's value. It's a good place to invest

Growing up in South Phoenix i see all of Tempe as "nice" it's just a matter of perspective. Tempe mesa all that shit is beautiful.
I love old school homes it could use a little upgrade and some grass, but I prefer old school than new school. New homes you can't even open your curtain cause you looking right at the neighbors window😅 and older you have more space and privacy. We appreciate ya Big Super ya gotta love AZ💛 😊😎 The prices are outrages though!

Yeah Tempe is sketchy AF. I used to work in Tempe right in the heart of the downtown area on Mill and there are so many homeless people on drugs. One of my coworkers actually got assaulted by a homeless man on her smoke break. He went to jail for a few weeks then was right back on the same corner

Rental prices in the Valley are based on Location Location Location…not the glamour of the home. Tempe is a wonderful city, with some of the best services available in Maricopa county. I like it a lot - anyplace can be made cute inside. Keep up this journey Big Super 👍

I grew up in a house with a carport just like that, you can fit a big, tall truck in the carport no problem. There might only be a few inches of clearance but it will fit. That closet in the hallway is where they used to put the heating furnace and hot water tank back then. In this case the house was retrofitted with a new system and it's probably up in the attic now. That's the reason for the plug and the holes in the top. Lastly, those houses were built in the early 60's.
This tour took me back. I grew up in Tempe on Rural and Southern. I had a few friends that lived in this same layout. All the cabinets and doors are like 40 years old minimum. Lol

Wow! I shared a home with two roommates and it had this exact floor plan. 4 br and 2 baths, pebble tec pool, I had bedroom #3. It was between Broadway & University and Priest & Hardy but it looked better and in 2005 it was 1350 a month. I enjoyed Tempe very much. Thanks for everything you show us and bringing back some memories!
2 years ago I lived in a 5 bed/2 & 1/2 bath (no tubs), in South Scottsdale for $1200/month.
It was a great find & I was there for about 5 years I think, but still, outrageous prices now.
VERY similar to my first house in Scottsdale. Early/mid-1960s build. Good bones but I basically gutted mine in the remodel -- in 1988! This place is still an antique 🙄
I just inherited a house on E. Balboa in Tempe and it will be going up for sale by the end of the year. It is a rental with a pool. It was nice for you to show this area.

For those in Arizona, I haven't seen this much in the backyards Big Super has featured: instead of spreading gravel, install decomposed granite with a stabilizer. It's low maintenance and will make the space usable. Another option would be to install decomposed granite or roadbase and overlay it with 1/2 inch of pea gravel. I don't know why landlords want to cheap out and then charge top dollar. 🤦♀️

I like how you walk around the neighborhood first and show the whole area. This part of town is old now but the alleys are clean and the homes kept up. You could make this a good family home again like it used to be. Prices are so high nowadays who can afford it though. Thx for the great showing! 👍
I agree I have the same home with a much larger kitchen and huge yard with 25 ft pool need to sell but apartments are way too expensive I’m a senior and caregiver for my disabled daughter 😢

Sadly, rental housing prices have skyrocketed. My daughter pays $1100 for a studio in Mesa. Anything we looked at under that price was in a bad neighborhood or totally nasty.

Been at the same apartments for 2 yrs now and I wanted to move. Instead, I had to move 2 doors down because that was the most reasonable deal I could get. Just when I got a job that would normally be good in a cheaper city, all the prices skyrocketed for everything. It's just ridiculous.
I almost always have a comment. When I first moved to AZ I stayed at studio 6 for a few months. Lots of action over there. 😳 that was 13 years ago. After seeing that a person was in that shed I am done! My first concern is safety. Second is price. At this rate I may never get back to Phoenix. 6 months still searching for affordable safe housing. My husband used to work in Tempe. There was a homeless camp that was set up right on the street when turning into his work . There was a guy out in a chair that would sleep out there non stop. He was out there for days sleeping away . Well, he was actually dead. It was like 120 out too. That house was scary. You can tell the landlord would be more of a slumlord with that place. He doesn’t even know about the tenant he already has 🧐.

No updates. I will call it what it is. My standards are apparently much different than yours. Not a landlord I would ever rent from.
I used tovwork in Tempe too. The homeless overrun the bus stops and my coworker got assaulted on her smoke break by a homeless man. Another coworker who lived by Mill Ave came outside to her backyard to find a homeless woman talking to herself and doing my coworkers laundry
The entire Phoenix -Tempe area is not a great place to live anymore. It has declined a lot in recent years. Homeless people, drug use, traffic, and crime everywhere. Sad to see, but it has happened.
Wow for that price the homeless guy would be my groundskeeper. I don’t mind the gravel, but would add more xeriscape as it’s more eco friendly and less to maintain.
Yes this place needs to be updated, but you know if they do that they will raise the rent up as well.

this is crazy I actually rent in this neighborhood, its fairly nice its a great location near grocery stores. we've been having problems of people going through our trash and recycling as well. It was so crazy seeing your video and realizing I live almost right down the street.
Having lived in the Midwest (MN), I’m always surprised at the lack of storage in the houses in AZ.
We don't have to store winter gear here!! Just Christmas lights.
It's only worth $1400 month they are gouging the locals for the last 2 years here in the valley with all the people moving here from other states.
Does the homeless tenant come with the lease? I'm not sure how they handle squatters in Tempe. But, in many cases it will take going through a court process to get them evicted. You may have just put the owners on notice after discovering someone is squatting in that shed. And, they may have to start the legal procedures in order to get that place rented.
I like how you walk through the home - it's so much easier to get the real feel of a place. Mesa is still the best value for the money though the neighborhoods are hit or miss (so is Tempe tho). 1600 square feet isn't enough space to accommodate 4 bedrooms. See that a lot in Tempe - squeezing in bedrooms to accommodate college renters.

Valley Fever is a fungal spore that is always in the air here. So, it really matters not. But many people don't care for the yards & trash homes. Thus why not much put into it.
I grew up in Iowa in a resort area called Okoboji Iowa. My dad farmed and my mom had a residential and commercial cleaning service so I've seen about everything. In that bathroom on the ceiling, that is the beginning of mold.
The back shed room must be where you have a washer and dryer I would think. Unless college kids go to their parents house maybe? See if you can tour the ultra modern houses they’re building in our area. South side of Lookout Mountain called Paradigm by Camelot Homes. Futuristic modern design
I just can’t comprehend these prices. No income going up rn, inflation at what 7%? And housing up 30% pushing rent up like crazy. I’m not an economist but this won’t work for long. These investors best get what they can now I guess. I can afford to absorb these prices but I’m not doing it. I’m not in the business of working to make other people rich 🤣🤣 so I’m refusing my lease in ahwatukee and downsizing AGAIN. Hell my next downsize will be a camper and I’m cool with that. Carry my ass to a state with some ocean views where living in a van is cool. If people would stop paying these prices these landlords would go jack prices somewhere else. It makes me sick they are ruining the valley.

Looks alot like my old home in Maryvale Phoenix. Seen alot that brings back memories. No lights in closets , no bathroom ventilation, the backyard is the same. Lots of room in backyard for dogs to play and security. I would add outside lights, again for security. . Renter's seem to not water anything so this is what it looks like. It is better than my old home , hope you get a renter.
Heeeyyyy! That’s my neighborhood. And yes… we have a big houseless population and a bad drug problem. Any house vacant in my hood is 90% sure to have a houseless person staying inside of it.

I live in this neighborhood! I love it. My friend owns the house so he's renting me a room well below what the market price is. Our place was built In 1969. I think most of the houses in the hood were built in the 70's. We are right off Mcclintock road. To me the location is perfect. It takes me 1 minute to get on the 60. Half a mile from my bank, grocery store, resturants and a goodwill. It's far enough away from ASU that you miss out on most of the noise, but still close enough that Mill Ave. Is a cab ride away if that's you're thing. The neighbors have all been good. Worst ive had to deal with is a few college parties. My friend first had an issue with someone stealing from the house when he first moved in and there was still a for sale sign up but since he took the sign down we haven't had any issues. My buddy bought the place for a little over 300,000 about two years ago and Zillow has it estimated at over 500,000 right now for a 3 bedroom 2 bath. I think about 1700 square feet. Like I said I love the area and the neighborhood and having a good size yard with no HOA. I'm very blessed to be in the living situation I'm in. Hope you have a good one and keep it real as always.

Seriously Tempe was overpriced when Arizona was cheap for what you would get. I remember we looked at several places in Tempe but they were small, some updated but for the price and living around a bunch of students I wasn't feeling it, but I love Tempe Marketplace

My grandmother moved into a senior citizen condo in Florida 15 years ago....It looked exactly like this and it was NOT new. so upgrades sorely needed. At least it seems clean..

Not a bad rental clean older home but 4 that price U can go rent something modern. Do not like the back of the house the yarn & fence is dirty & the back of the house is old looking. Also that shed needs a lock on the door possibly can be used for laundry.😀

Not a bad deal split 4 ways with roommates. I grew up in Tempe and now reside in Prescott Az. Where the rent for an apartment is $650 - $1800 mo. Fortunately I own my place in the pines

Popcorn ceilings were big here in the 60’s-70’s. The front area is called a courtyard. Then you have the living room and the family room off the kitchen. I’d use the smaller bedroom for a den. Not too bad.
Oh snap you were in my neighborhood area. It’s a nice spot great access to a lot of areas from there. Yes one problem I can say a lot of homeless in the alley areas at times depending on weather.

Didn’t really realize the “Homeless” population but that could be because I come from Northern CA (Bay Area) which seeing/knowing “Homeless Folk” is very very common. Can you do Casa Grande/San Tan/Queen Creek…heard of those cities but have no clue what they’re about. Thanks again!
I've been living in Tempe 11 yrs now same place moved into a senior park at age 41. I was considering selling n moving out a few yrs ago but when I seen the same apartment s I looked at 11 yrs ago @$750 amonth was then $1400 a month I didn't even bother to look at houses. I stayed where I am. 730.00 a month for lot space. Yeah you have to buy a place in the park, but it's much nicer than an appointment building n there is a sense of community here. Just sucks if you fail to pay lot rent no difference as renting, you get evicted by the end of the month in court n given up to 3 days to vacate your home.If you can't pay the back rent late fees n stay current w lot rent after being evicted, you are not allowed to sell your property so Basically the park takes ownership of your trailer n makes thousands selling your home you own n only owe them less than $800& you get $0.Crazy. Inflation in rents are mostly due to so many of us relocating here to AZ it's outragious

10 years ago when I moved to Phoenix rent was $600.00 a month. That really puts things in perspective. The transplants from liberal States are causing prices to skyrocket. Everyone is getting forced out of their homes in favor of the out of State transplants who can pay more. This is forcing most working class people into hotels or onto the street.

Oh man I just laughed out loud when you opened that "extra room". My advice do not rent that house until that homeless individual has been permanently banished. The homeless have more rights than most of us in some jurisdictions.
