Our Vanishing Coast

  • Community Members - The purpose of this video is to increase awareness around coastal erosion which has resulted in the dramatic disappearance of Half Moon Bay, beaches and bluff top trails.
As someone who has spent my entire life on these beaches it saddens me to bear witness to this. The eradication of our community's most valuable natural resource is something that needs to be addressed. Let's not wait until it someone falls off the coastal trail and injures themselves. Let's not wait until HWY 1 (the transportation lifeline of the coast) is threatened.
This interview is not a result of a scientific study. I have not validated all of the information presented as such. I am just a concerned community member - not a scientist.
The images and the videos spliced into this interview we mostly taken at higher tide but all were taken with very little swell. The combination of a proper, long-period storm swell with peak high-tide will wreck carnage on our bluff tops, coastal trail, and Mirada Rd (or what will be left of it). A hand full of these conditions over a couple of winters and there will be REAL risk to HWY 1.
I invite you to walk down to the effected areas during the next big swell, high-tide combination and observe for yourselves. Please be careful, however, as conditions (even on public roads like Mirada) will be dangerous.
Any effort to date to preserve the coastline and any effort other than re-establishing the natural flow of sand will be a half-measure at best. These efforts, not only futile, will be financially untenable for our community as they will need to be continual. But...even continual effort will not stop the ocean from carving away at our coast let alone reverse it.
In it's simplest form we have a give and take system. The ocean TAKES sand and material out to see and down the coast but it GIVES us new sand from the mountains and from the north. Like many things in the natural world it is a perfectly balanced system. The creation of the harbor has removed nature's ability to give us new sand leaving us with a system that only takes sand away. When you look at it this way you can clearly see the ONLY sustainable solution is to re-establish this natural balance by providing new sand flow.
I invite you to simply observe what is going on with our coastal beaches. If you don't like what you see please spread the word and help increase awareness. At the end of the day the power to make change (any change) lies within us. Our collective intention will bring attention and subsequent action and we will protect our coastline and GET OUR BEACHES BACK!
    Thank you for watching!

You guys would be happy to know that there is a big plan for some Lagoon restoration work in Oceanside.
