I know this comment is a year late but here it goes. I just picked up a 2005 base model Tacoma and just added cruise control as well as intermittent wiper switch. They both work great. My next thing to check is just what you just did. But first I have to upgrade the stereo system to a radio that has camera mode. Thanks for the video. Now I know what to look for in the tailgate.

I have a very similar 2015 tacoma and bought two remote fobs online for under $30. Followed online instructions and programmed both up no problem. All I needed was the FOB units, no additional electronics. My Tacoma has same wiring at tailgate and same display info on radio screen, so I will order backup camera. Thank you for the info and video!

If your 2015 Tacoma is basic like mine, it also doesn’t have intermittent wipers. You can buy an intermittent wiper switch that contains the electronics so that it is a plug-and-play upgrade. It was very cheap and easy to install.

I’ve always enjoyed your videos, clear and concise. I recently bought a 2000 Ford Ranger “in a basket. I the engine and bed were completely disassembled. It too was a base model and when I was urging it back together I took the time to add power windows and power locks in the doors. I am now looking at putting a backup camera in the system. I don’t have a radio with a screen so I’ll have to get a screen to view also. I also do not have wiring back there so I’m looking at a wireless system.

FYI there's a connector underneath the bed that can be disconnected if you wish to pull the tailgate off for hauling an oversize load. Of course you can do that by just lowering the gate but sometimes you might want to remove it completely.

I for one like when you creators "go off topic". It shows another side of your interests, shows your problem solving skills in a different light and makes a nice occasional change from the usual.

Great catch on the upgrade . When the truck was spec'd that camera option was likely $150 - $ 200 dollars .

On the keyless entry.... We bought a 2013 Dodge Journey, and it came with one "key" (fob). The dealer wanted a lot of money for another one so we bought one online for a lot less money, but had to take it to the dealer to get it programmed to match the vehicle. Ever since then there have been numerous occasions when we've both been in the car, with both keys, and it doesn't see either of of them and refuses to start. We've had it back to the dealer a couple of times, $$$ each time, and it still isn't fixed. I'm thinking we need to start shopping for another dealer at this point. Something to watch out for, anyhow....

Great job on the video Lee. I too have a 2015 Tacoma, fortunately mine has all the options. I would be interested in making the camera come on when needed without being in reverse.
I am wondering if your Tacoma has a terrible squalling noise while driving into a cross wind. I live in south west Kansas and it is not uncommon to have cross wind of 30-50 miles per hour. My Tacoma had a terrible squalling noise that sounded like holding a balloon and letting the air out slowly. I solved this by adding door edge trim too the top of the doors, from near the front fenders to the back of the rear door (mine is an access cab). I haven’t heard the noise since. The noise was bad enough that if it had made it while I was test driving it,I would not have bought the truck. Love the Tacoma now that it don’t make that terrible noise. You are going to like that camera. Thanks for the great videos!

Wow you got off cheap. And the switches for $20 is fantastic. Every time I have asked about the little plastic nozzle for the windshield washer they want $40. I think maybe I should do some internet search for a better price.
