Thalassery fort at Kannur established by the East India Company is a historical monument which stands as testimonial of colonial rule in Kerala. The East India Company which had established its settlement on the Malabar coast in 1683 built the monument as a testimonial of their colonial imperialism in 1703. The fort was once the nucleus of Thalassery's development. The imposing square fort has massive walls, huge, intricately carved doors and secret tunnels to the sea all in all, the perfect setting for you to get an authentic taste of some local history and heritage!

Around 30 years ago when I was in highschool got an opportunity to visit both the under ground "tunnels" ( actually barracks) during "pushpafala pradarshanam". It was well lighted (1000w) inside and people allowed in batches well managed by NCC cadets with entry fee of Rs 2. Till then many rumours where there regarding the interiors.
Actually one (first one, underground) has a long tunnel (approx 50ft) which leads to a big semi cylindrical godown ( approximately 80ft long x 40ft wide x 15ft high) structure which is connected ( internally with a 5 ft wider tunnel) with one more same size godown structure. Both godowns are parallel, with a small connection passage.
The second tunnel on top of hill has a narrow tunnel with one godown structure(does not go to any sea). The entire structure is within the fort hill. Thanks to the organisers to clear all rumours regarding the curious tunnel structure. Unfortunately now the tunnels are closed for public.
