Bringing home a new #parrot is an exciting experience, adding colors and cheerful chirps to your home. However, amidst this joy, there's a crucial need for caution due to the growing threat of Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). PBFD is no longer confined to Indian Ringneck parrots but is now showing in other species, like Macaws and Amazon parrots as well.
PBFD is a viral disease without a cure, leading to severe beak deformities, feather loss, and often proving fatal. To protect your flock, stringent quarantine measures are necessary. Keeping quarantined birds away from healthy ones to prevent virus transmission through air circulation systems or outdoor environments where wind can carry infectious particles is vital.
Consulting your avian veterinarian is crucial for testing and determining the frequency of PBFD tests. Typically, vets recommend testing 2 to 3 times, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, to detect the disease's potential development. False results are possible, making multiple tests necessary.

Great info. There’s someone on Instagram that has a lovebird with beak and feather. The little bird is well loved and well cared for. But, it breaks my heart. Yes. Some virus particles can remain active for years. Example, when HIV epidemic was at it’s height we were told to be more fearful of hepatitis. The hepatitis virus remains active for years. Both, diseases travel in body fluids that’s why proper sanitation is and was so important. It’s also super important to follow good hygiene, such as really good hand washing prior to handling your birds and things they come into contact with. Also, if you live in an area experiencing bird flu. Remove your outside shoes before entering your home.😊

What I read in a small article said there has been case of bird flu in a turkey vulture detected this year, 2024, in Brevard County. The article said the bird was captive held. And, Florida’s Agriculture Commissioner has added emergency measure to protect cattle. Some states have detected the virus in milk. Changing shoes and good hand washing technique as far as I’m concerned is an absolute must. Just because we haven’t heard anything, birds migrate and obviously fly. I’ll do anything I can to protect my flock. Oh, I posted a picture of Knute on top of his cage. He had just landed and was preparing to take off!
Of course, you're right that because the PBFD virus sheds on dander, down feathers and dried faeces dust, it's virtually impossible to make a quarantine partition in your home 100% effective.... but that doesn't mean you can't minimise the risk by keeping the new bird/s separate in a closed-off space until tests are complete.
As you say, if you have birds, you'll likely have to deal with disease at some point and we can all only do our best. If I have a sick bird, I always clean its cage with 10% chlorine bleach spray, then wipe it over once the spray has dried. I put sick birds in a separate room and make sure it's as well ventilated as possible (good weather helps!) It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

I had a firey shouldered conure that had PBFD. He lived for 10 years but he was totally bald.
How did he get it?
@ParrotBliss sadly he picked it up either at the breeders or the person that hand reared him. It was obvious from him first starting to moult the first time something was wrong so we had him tested. His feathers were just falling out and either not being replaced, or they grew back misshapen and the wrong colour.
So I am wondering, how dangerous is it to visit a bird store? We love visiting a local bird store a few times a year. Are we putting our 2 parrots at risk by visiting the store?
I don't think it's too bad, but I would be careful. If you hold the birds, you may want to wash your hands and even change your clothes when you go home.
How do you bring new parrots into your flock ?
