    Just alittle tip from my lessons learned the hard way, tape up that headstock while filing the nut. Even us careful folk have a slip of the old nubbs once and awhile lol.

    Great job on the nut. I know from working on many Martins that the angles are complex. I've seen many replacement nuts that don't fit perfectly in the groove. I always mask off the peghead just behind the nut before I start filing the slots though. As Jerry would say, "Ask me why I started doing that."

    Nice Job!, my son's Martin has the binding loose in the same exact place, must be common. It looks like his guitar, all that pearl inlay and all. It needs a fret job too, he plays the hell out of it.

      Jthonn just saying I've heard the pro players say that if a guitar is stored in a climate controlled area or not played, it will explode ! I cant take the chance and it's why I'm playing mine (HD28) every spare moment I have.
      Of course I'm kidding but when I bought mine and played it every day, the tone or voice sounded different after almost two years. It has a sweet sound . I'm sure the one your son plays must be even better. Enjoy them

      The reason for this binding problem is..At the factor they use straight binding with glue and tape.. In most shops the binding is preformed to fit** removing all stress from the binding. before gluing and taping.***DR KEL

      @@dscdrkel5546 Thanks, that makes sense. I know that the plastic binding also shrinks a little over time. I wish they would scrape the binding too, because the lacquer peels off, at least at the fretboard binding. It looks rough and feels sharp in spots. I have been reluctant to scrape it myself, plus it would have to be done to the entire guitar to match. Dang shame on a high end instrument.

    I have a 1985 D-41 Martin that I bought new and the binding came loose at several spots around the top and back. In addition, quite a bit of the binding came loose around the peg head. It was all repaired by a Martin authorized repairman and I’ve played it a bunch since then! I guess they must have had some binding issues during that time!

    I’ve had dozens of Martins as well as other higher end guitars. Never had binding come loose. I thought this was just a problem with newer ones because the state of PA doesn’t allow them to use the best glue. But the early seventies are notorious for quality problems.

    The D41 is my dream guitar. It has the perfect amount of "Bling" without going overboard like the D-42 and D-45 do. For some reason, the abalone binding on the top, that goes around the neck on the D-42 and 45, is just a little overboard for me. I hope to be able to afford to order an Adirondack top with Brazilian back and sides, from the Custom Shop.

    The squeeze out on the binding repair looked challenging. What if you waxed it prior to beginning (without getting any in the seam)?

  • @1777DK
    @1777DK 3 года назад +5

    Attention all repair people. Please do everyone else a solid, and not gule to the bottom, of the nut slot, the glue goes on the end of the fretboard. The next guy, who needs to make a new nut, could have a vey bad day, if you do this. I have chipped and split head plates, because people have glued the bottom. Also I always protect the instrument while working, and have no tools on the bench, right next to the project. The days you learn these lessons, the hard way, are not the good days either.

    • @earthman6700

      Thanks. Can you advise what glue to use please. Any thoughts of getting rid of a long scratch on the lacquer of my Crafter acoustic? Northwest Guitars nitrocellulose chip repair but not sure if it will show up worse than the scratch. Any thoughts would be welcome.

    • @1777DK
      @1777DK 3 года назад

      @@earthman6700 I use Titebond's bottled hide glue for nuts, because you can dissolve any left overs, with water, if you ever need to change the nut again. Scratch repair is very difficult to advise, without the instrument, sometimes you can do an almost invisible repair, using just CA glue, other times, you need a partial refinish.

    Caleb, good job here is a little tip for removing a Martin or Gibson style recessed nut, get yourself a hair dryer attach a paper towel tube to the hair dryer & swish the end of the paper towel tube so it fits the nut put the dryer on very low for 2-min then pull the nut out with soft jaw pliers rocking it back & forth it should come out clean. Also You should always cover the headstock & fretboard when fileing the nut slots & crowning frets You would hate yourself if you ever slipped & put a gouge in the finish.(Ask me how I know). God Bless & keep up the good work🙏🙏🇺🇸🎸🎸🎸👨🏻‍🦯

    have you heard of an old wood conditioner treatment made of mixing beeswax and coconut oil? i make it and use it on a few things around the house. idk what the procedure to make it for guitars would be.

    • @strawbrains7375
      @strawbrains7375 3 года назад

      I made some turpentine and beeswax mix by letting it sit in the window together and melt in a small mason jar. Eyeballed the chunk of wax and turpentine, guess 1 part each. I would like to do one with linseed oil (using tried and true polymerized stuff) and use it on projects, it would probably work well on stuff that needs some love.

      I have a 2020-21 HD-28E and it looks, plays and sounds amazing, and the pickup is really nice (for a pickup). I don't think its a fluke, it came sealed in the Martin box right from the warehouse. It arrived during a freezing week in January. I let it warm up before unboxing, and it was in perfect tune out of the box. Just my experience, but I can't stop playing it, it sings like a bird and loves to be wailed on! I did lower the action a 64th". Hopefully I get 20 years before a neck reset, I won't put heavy gauge strings on it ever. Custom builders charge even more for Martin style and quality guitars.

    • @tinman8518
      @tinman8518 3 года назад

      @@kapstersmusic Those are beautiful. They have the forward shifting bracing like my D-42. I like the 1 3/4" nut width too. Wish mine had that. Well, hopefully having the truss rod adjustment will go a long ways before you need a neck reset. That's one big improvement Martin has made, IMHO.

    • @kapstersmusic
      @kapstersmusic 3 года назад

      @@tinman8518 Yes the neck profile is really comfortable. The relief was perfect so I haven't touched the truss rod. The saddle still looks tall even after taking 2/64" off, plenty of break angle left. I understand why so many builders are going to bolt-on necks, but you still have to un-glue the fingerboard extension to reset a bolt-on neck. I just love the tone from that dove-tail joint. As time goes on I will switch to .012" gauge strings as the guitar and my fingers get older.
