- Professor Anders Irbäck, Member of the Nobel Committee for Physics, was interviewed by journalist Lisa Kirsebom.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”.

Deeply confused like many will be, the apparent level of mental gymnastics one has to go through to consider this physics is strange. Certainly not straightforward. One has to wonder what other contributions in physics this was chosen over 🤔
Feels like they just want to ride the AI hype train… now claiming computer science as a sub field of physics. Outrageous!
Which contemporary contributions of physics that could be of any significance for receiving such a price are you thinking of?
It's true physics have a parts in all fields but when you said nobel prize in physics you must give who that work in a fundamental or exactly pure physics field, by know it's possible to give all fields like chemistry, biology, and so on because they all related to physics, i think it's against Alfred nobel thought and works.
Congratulations Hopfield and Hinton 🎉🎉😊😊❤❤
Yes!
It will revolutionize the machine learning in true sense .we salute you gentlemen for your insights and tireless efforts. Tue saints
Literally Maths and computer science. Black Scholes model was also constructed by a physicist, based on ideas of brownian motion BUT it is just a use of mathematics in economics problem. So the award was in economics. Neural network should get a turing award not be a ' major contributing achievement to the field of physics' . Like come on.
+ maybe the problem is that since late 70s physics doesn't have any major breakthroughs...
"maybe the problem is that since late 70s physics doesn't have any major breakthroughs."
exactly this.
Physics -> Neural Network , Foundation of AI -> ML … So are we saying Machine Learning is physics because its first idea stems from physics?
It is not!
They run on transistors. And the inventors of the latter were Nobel awardee in physics (1956).
(Though bitcoin diggers would be even better nominee.)
It has strong connection to statistical mechanics, one could say. But I think the real reason for the prize to Hinton and Hopfield is that "traditional" physics currently has hardly anything to offer of significance that would be worth a Nobel prize ...
really unexpected
Physics is now claiming computer science? Outrageous.
Current physics , not only in the public eye, is dominated by the string theory lie and and ever more absurd particle existence claims. The topic that comes closest to physics and actually has enormous practical implications is Deep Learning. So they chose Hinton and Hopfield. The status of contemporary physics is outrageous, not this prize.
Feeling so happy for you and your team!!!
Love from India 🇮🇳
Guys,...
There is no competent work happening in fundamental physics this is why this nobel prize is perhaps given to computer scientists...
The stagnation is physics has never been real. One may argue
Greatest and more creations 👌
❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤
Congratulations 👏❤
That has nothing to do with physics. Nonsense
It has tons to do with physics...
Exactly!
They hijacked him to make themselves still relevant
Physiology or Economics would be more accurate. Or just create a new one for engineering!
Modeling physical facts with a computer to compute through permutations is PHYSICS
time did pass were you could to it on the backside of an envelope
