  • "Letterkenny" creator, co-writer and star Jared Keeso talks to Shad about how growing up in a small Ontario town influenced the show, and how it walks the line between laughing with, and laughing at, the idiosyncrasies of small town life.

q is a magazine show that’s unpredictable in the best sense - proud to be “a wild mix of culture by way of Canada” as described by the New York Times. The Globe & Mail noted the show’s “raging popularity across a variety of platforms -- podcasts, television, websites, satellite radio, terrestrial radio, and occasional live remote broadcasts."

I grew up in smalltown Beaverton on the shores of Lake Simcoe and totally identify with many of the Letterkenny characters. We'd have an odd hybrid mix of rural farm folk, hockey players and Toronto cottagers. But I grew up gettin' drunk at farm parties, ice fishin', attending hockey boosters at the arena...and hell, we had a drive-in theatre just outside of town that was the pro-drinking venue for everyone...especially the all-nighters on long weekends. Letterkenny is like a nostalgic trip back to my youth. Thanks Jared and everyone for sharing your spot-on interpretation of us all.

Exactly!” Because I’m from a small town in Wisconsin (in case that wasn’t obvious), and I identified with and loved Letterkenny 30 seconds into the first episode. Plus we pronounce “about” the same way. I’m looking forward to the future when we get annexed by Canada, but it’s imperative that that bit of Michigan that was obviously meant to be in Wisconsin gets annexed as well. Great show. Amazing.

The writing is so articulate and extensive, I've never seen a show use a specific area's dialect so well. I absolutely love all the slang and colloquialisms, as well as getting a small clue into what the culture is like in a place I've never been. Bravo to Jared for not only creating and writing the show but doing a spot-on job of the role of Wayne. I grew up in relatively the same area as Listowel, and he's done a great job of capturing what I experienced growing up in rural SW Ontario. Funny as fuck, and I can't wait for season 2.
