I have this dozer and the same issue on the other side. This extremely comprehensive video will guide me in fixing it. I knew it would be something like this but I have never been in there before and I will be working alone as well so this guide is a real hand up. thanks.
Good luck. The left side is the easier side... Just 2 shift linkages and a battery cable and you can remove that box. Much less of a mess and a little lighter to deal with as well. Let me know if you run into any snags.
@@spankranchgarage Thats about what I concluded after obsessing about it last night. If I had I known how I would have fixed it a year or more ago. I thought I had to take the roll cage off. It would really serve me to get this done this fall... Only time will tell. I am retired and do not push near as hard as I used to. cheers thanks again.
Well I have offered you suggestions on several things on these machines. I can see I don't need to do that anymore. You just navigated one of the most hateful jobs you can run across on them in pretty harsh conditions without a hitch. Well done.
Had a 450C that had touchy right steering clutch the 10 years we owned it. Said we'll fix it if, and when it failed. Never did. Betcha that lil' guy is still going strong in some field. Great little dozer.
Me too. Trusting life and limb to a hydraulic seal is crazy, particularly for a guy on his own far from help. I do cars, usually on my own, and I wouldn’t take that chance.
Haven't watched the hole video yet, but I feel your pain getting to that repair area. Been there done that on many projects. All the best. will watch the rest.
I tell you what man every video of yours that comes out I always take the time to watch and toss a like your direction. You’re one of the few RUclipsrs I do that for, not to mention you’ve been a huge inspiration for me to really work on my projects and push forward on them even if it’s just a little here and there there when time grants it. Because of you I’ve also been contemplating starting my own channel once I get some better shop space to work in. Thank you for always putting out good content and keep on trucking man 🤘🏼
This was a super informative video on those dry clutchs. I laughed out loud at the line. Don't have to worry about my stuff rusting up. Because I take it apart every 6 hours!😜 Man! Can i relate to that!!
Wow. I have the same exact dozer with some of the same problems. I wish I had your confidence in repairing. Your videos are very helpful. I hope you keep doing them for the rest of us.
I'm always filming! I have a playlist on this dozer , there isn't much I haven't had to fix on it at this point. Be confident and go for it, there really not that bad but the first time is intimidating
Absoulutley a great job!, i do the same when fixing things to save time. That should solve the problem and now you can go move some dirt!. Great video!.
New to the channel. I think it shows real promise and may do very well. I think you have a good voice for video, and I like hearing you explain and comment. You seem knowledgeable as well.
A job like this, isn't easy at home, let alone in the middle of the woods, with minimal gear. Good save. So weird about that pin. Like you said, you'd expect it to twist the ears a bit, before it let's go
I totally understand this may not have been an option to get but starting on the 450C they swapped to wet steering clutch housings. They last significantly longer. I’ve had a straight 450 with dry clutches like your B has. Sold it and bought 450C cheap that I had to rebuild the reverser and the steering clutches in. Also sent the brake bands off to be relined. Doing the HLR is quite a job. Once I finished it was a great little dozer. Ended up selling it when equipment prices were up and bought a 450D cheap that I had to do an out of frame rebuild on the engine. Still have the 450D and have a 97 Cat D5C that I recently bought with a bad engine knock. I have it torn down right now waiting on parts to rebuild it. Will likely sell the 450D when it’s finished as I don’t need 2 dozers. The 450s are great machines I was just looking for something a little heavier. I’ve been fortunate to make really good profit when selling because I buy them broken and cheap. May be an option for you as well. Really enjoyed your video!!!
Thank you! I'm aware the C models are much more desirable. I couldn't find one in my price range when I was shopping for this. I remain hopeful that eventually I will find a cheap C model with a winch that I can pick up and fix maybe.
@@spankranchgarage totally understand! I’ve found all my deals on fb marketplace. Like you say, it just takes time. I’ve noticed equipment prices falling so hopefully you can come across a good one. Looking forward to more videos from you. Good luck and stay hydrated;)
Looks close to the older cat dozers. They were a real pain. Just about like this ugly job. I use the snap on longer wrenches when possible. Gives me more leverage. Thanks great job!
Yeahhh I often think about this. Im at about 9000 bucks on this one, plus a bazillion hours of my time which isnt free either. But would a 20K G model be more reliable? Maybe, but maybe not.
I've worked on lots of them and clutch box is watertight therefore, it turns into a greenhouse heating cooling condensation kills much components after years of use
Them DAMN springs lol. Nice job on the field repair. Let me kno how thouse bands hold up as far as making adjustments. I know i have to tighten mine about every 8 hrs of run time when working on downhill slop Where im useing brakes a lot to steer.
Yeah man I HATE those springs. I expect this one will wear pretty quick until all the grooving is flat, then it will slow down. I watched your brake band video it was really helpful. I was worried I couldnt change the band with the clutch still installed but you proved it was possible.
I have crappy luck. In my 61 years here on this fine planet I have learn, hope for the best and prepare for the worst and just keep laughing, it ends in the end.
Yeah... I can afford to fix this one many times before renting becomes the cheaper option. Plus delivery where I live is very challenging. Most trucks wont come back here
@@spankranchgarage understand some of that and if they did they would hit you hard. Sure there are plenty of trees you can cut to build a nice pole building to store the equipment in in the near future. Looking great so far
The million dollar fix is to sell a 1" hole in top cover weld a 3/4 pipe nipple and thread in a hydraulic vented cap from your log splitter and it will out last a wet clutch ❤❤❤
Great idea. The thought being something that breathes but keeps water out? I have noticed condensation in the other side clutch once. Wasnt happy to see that

Nice dozer strong 450d
Well.....least it wasn't electronic related. I had to replace a cheap seal, which entailed about 12 hrs of work taking off parts and putting back.
Cheapest part of owning and old bulldozer is buying the old bulldozer.
You got that right!
Your videos on this dozer show nicely why current prices on them are way over priced
