By the way, the REAL reason tabs are superior to spaces (for indentation!) is it allows each developer to set his own tab size and read the code the way he likes. That’s why you should indent with tabs, align with spaces. Unfortunately I mostly write PHP so PSR-2 has already made the decision for me. (In the end, consistency and standards are more important than common sense.)
Tabs aren't superior to spaces because realistically no sane person adjusts their tab sizes in any meaningful amount. Mixing tabs and spaces just obfuscates what characters are there, and causes surprises while refactoring.
