Honestly, there is more sense to it than it seems. Confirmation of a move in a board game is a good thing to have. Tapping would mentally restrain the player from redoing something, especially rolling dice or buying something.

this is what a lot of complex board games feel like where it's 1% playing 99% manually updating and setting things up
Inscryption IRL players: "Finally, a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary!"
Playing inscryption IRL in a 2 player duel would be way more fun, and also would not require nearly any tedious doing of background tasks since the game has nearly none of those. So it would be pretty dope if I'm not missing something.
A 1 player run of act 1/kaycee's mod would have you need to spent a lot of effort while crafting the board itself so you would be able to easily start a run without having to spend tens of minutes RNG'ing the upcoming three maps, the battles and shit, and I do not know an easy way to set that up since I'm not familiar with that game's RNG of the map itself. Otherwise, it would still not tedious going through map events, doing the totems, merchant pelt trade, etc.
OMG FF14 reference lol
Thank you so much, I was so stressed that I had to do this and now that I don't have to I can feel the weight lifted off my chest. I'm gonna go spend time with my family.

When I was a kid I used up all my families dial up internet for the month on neopets and my parents had to ban me from using it. I then spent months creating my own offline neopets. totally agree, so glad for unrelated reasons I had them on hand for this.
So I wanna preface this by saying that this is incredible, and you clearly put a lot of thought into replicating the game mechanics, including those that aren't easily visible (like the distribution of boosters, which, while your dice don't replicate *perfectly* , is still as close as you can get with common dice).
But I also want to point out the The Plant (your ante 1 boss) cannot be a boss blind for the first three antes. Furthermore, you forgot to *apply* The Plant. Your jacks should have been debuffed, which would make the hand not win.
I still VERY MUCH respect the effort, and am not at all surprised to see an error like this. I definitely would have made them myself.
Dude why even bother
debuffing the jacks would have been such a funny detail to apply and then realize I didn't win though, missed opportunity!
I had to check the comments if anyone else noticed this too XD
This is a phenomenal video btw, the most engaged I've been with balatro since my hyperfixation ended a few weeks ago
I’ve never played Balatro but know that it won awards and knew it was a card game, but didn’t know it was this complex to the point where it takes 50 minutes to show how to play a recreation of the game in real life. But my god do I love it. I came here for the craftsmanship and even though it’s a bit rough, I used to come up with board games as a child and make them out of whatever I could find so I have no room to talk. You obviously just made this out of pure love of the game and it works perfectly. ❤
It’s less that the game is super complex and moreso just that math and certain randomizations take a much longer time irl. I’d also imagine shuffling would take a while.
Like opening a standard pack which just adds 1-2 playing cards to your deck from a choice of 3-5. In the game all the time is spent decision making. Takes like 5 seconds.
Here, you have to roll to randomize the size of the standard pack (1of3, 1of5, 2of5), draw from the pile, roll to randomize three aspects of each playing card (enhancement, edition, seal), apply said aspects as needed, and only then do you get to actually spend time deciding.
The math for the scoring does get more complicated than a typical video/card game.
This looks like such a cool game, I am going to make a video game version of it.
What are you going to call it?

All those things are equally useful and useless, at the same time. Value is subjective, be your own arbiter. If you were having fun, you were having fun.
There’s an Etsy seller who sells holo versions of all the cards, haven’t found one without foil yet tho.
Tbh, that's my experience playing Magic The Gathering or Terraforming Mars in real life. The rules start combo-ing with each other, and there's many triggers that you need to watch, and at some point it becomes clear that the thing works better as a computer game than a physical one.

Mad respect for this. I wanted to try and do a way cut down version of this as soon as i started playing last year. The way you mark affected cards is VERY practical and smart. its so much to keep track of, but if one was able to build small implements (clickers that would count up and reset) you really could DM balatro for someone. and i think that would be insanely cool to see. Thanks for doing something cool
Honestly, to run it smoothly you might need multiple people handling the upkeep.
...if anyone does this, I volunteer for one of the upkeep roles.
@EulerAlert yes, you're absolutely right. A group could definitely streamline the process. With a little practice, it would be great to observe
So true that there is so many little things to keep track of, mid-way through I realized I wasn't keeping count of the amount of tarot played or times a hand was played, so I skillfully just didn't buy supernova to avoid the consequences of my actions. You are right that building little buttons and gadgets to track all these background stuff would make it much more fun to play.
@cursedfruitsalad2792 listen, no matter what, this is a hell of a rough draft / proof of concept. This was a great case study. Thanks so much for sharing
Funnily enough i actually did this a few weeks ago but your version looks much more elaborate, props dude!
I fellow crafter, how did yours differ?
@
I used markers to draw 50 jokers (avoiding ones which involve RNG, retriggers, and scaling / changing the effect each round to avoid overcomplication), 12 tarot cards, and the 12 planet cards, all with effects and pricing on the backside. I had 1 full deck to play with and 1 extra deck of spare cards, along with colored card sleeves for enhancements (gold, stone, wild, steel) and stickers i could place on these sleeves to change the rank and suit of a card if i ran out of spares. I also made some sleeves into booster packs. I used poker chips to represent the number of hands, discards, and hand size remaining, yellow beads to represent money, and index cards to display run information / hands, and drew on some tiles to make boss blinds.
I had someone else play the game (only my dad so far) straight on the table while i was the game master. I setup the common, uncommon, and rare jokers and the booster packs on a nearby table, and filled the shop by shuffling each deck and drawing multiple cards from each one for the right rarity proportions, and then finally drawing the cards to go in the shop, and the packs to be filled. Then in each round I used Desmos graphing calculator for scoring.
If I ever update this game I’ll definitely consider using some ideas from this video like dice for RNG and placeholder cards for the shop, you did a good job of covering your bases here and im happy to see I wasn’t the only one with this idea
lucky cat only shows up if you have triggered a lucky card in the run, so you could have made a pile for the conditional show-up jokers which you add to as time goes on
guess i gotta make a part 2 now

This is wild! So much effort. I imagine some veterans of the board game industry could probably find a few ways to optimize and consolidate some of the mechanics. I bet some sort of 3D printed mechanical calculator/token tracker could make managing your coins simpler. Modifying the cards is really fiddly, maybe some sort of removable stickers would be simpler, or some white board cards compatible with erasable markers. I think also maybe adding a specific amount of duplicates to the decks could reduce the amount of die rolls needed since those ratios would be baked in. Either way, I'd love to see this developed further, even if it is likely futile to make it much easier.
im here for it all. this is the youtube i miss: the fumbling around; trying to manage the increasing stacks of paper dice and tokens; pulling up the wiki. im locked tf in
I could totally imagine back in time where internet wasn't a thing, people play this. Yes, it's an awful lot amount of time to play but balatro is an incredibly cool concept stand alone as a deck-building game. Props to you, beautiful execution.

its always intresting to see everyones solution for making the game real, your ways were super diffrent from mine, great video and great project!!!
I've theorized about how I would do this, and it involves having a camera look at the playing field and automatically calculating your score
that sounds fucking insane, how would that even work??
Tbh real poker tournaments often use NFC chipped cards which can be placed on a card reader - for the purpose of showing cards on the broadcast. I imagine you could use a set of card readers that you use to score each hand with. Would remove the need for computer vision!
@@cursedfruitsalad2792 You could use machine learning techniques with the camera output to recognise the playing cards. Theres a couple of projects like that on youtube. Then run a script that recreates the Balatro calculations. Problem is the different modifiers. I guess you could get small stickers to put on the cards with a unique colour that represent each card modifier, and then add a colour recognition tool to the script to recognise and apply the modifiers.
If you find a me RUclips tutorial showing me how to set this up I will find a way to make it happen
