April 11, 2020: (Part 1 of 3) The Bystander Effect
I've been thinking about how individual people...AFAIK nice people if you met them in the street...can justify supporting an openly flagrant disregard for human decency as well as the history of the United States and that of the world in this regard.
Three things come to mind:
1) Herd (Mob) Mentality: We need to belong to a group. It's ok to leave one group for another, but not to stand out from the crowd
2) The Stanford Prison Experiment: We quickly conform to peer groups without realizing it. Any group.
3)Obedience: Milgram's Study: We stay on task if we're being watched. Or we really dgaf about other semi-random humans. Or something
