Had the airbag light, seatbelt light, dome light turning on/off, no horn or steering wheel controls, no radio, no wipers and eventually the car not starting intermittently issues on my '06 E53. Checked Google and found clock spring issue, but more results pointed to the ignition switch. Easier to change so bought one two days ago and it worked. Had to squeeze it in as the after market one (£18.99 Amazon) was about a tenth of a mm bigger. PLEASE note the orientation of the white center piece. I had to rotate it to match the original. All issues resolved. Thanks for the clear instructions!
It should be noted that once you insert the new ignition switch you can test to make sure the key goes in and turns before tightening the two precision screws back in. IF YOUR KEY WONT TURN you ended up like me with everything back together and the ignition switch just slightly off center. You need to adjust the two tiny screws and you can test that you have the switch in the correct position by putting the key in and making sure it turns properly before tightening.
Such a beautiful car! To this day it is still my favorite BMW (and I drive a X6). I just watched the video to see the beautiful interior! Thanks for that!
2003 X5 owner here, thank you for the heads up on the odd T-27 size, would have been my luck stripping the bolt with a T-25. Amazing how a little module can affect so much in a car. Cheers.
Thanks for this video, I did this job today. Hardest part by far was getting the bosch bolt out above the ignition switch. My small socket wrench would only just about fit, but as the bolt undid there was hardly any space. I managed it somehow though!
Curious to know what symptoms or error codes did you see to prompt this change? I just got a Code 90 on my E39's OBC Test 14, and forums have pointed me to the ignition switch as a likely culprit.
Hi; On these days I went to work on my 2003 x5 3.0i very well, then when I finished my work at 3:30 pm the vehicle did not want to turn on and all its lights and radio was okay, it could have passed to the vehicle. Please BIMMER ZEIT you can explain something to me. Thank you.
Do you need to reclock the switch inner mechanism to align with the key in the off position? Or do you insert the key and click in order for the male and female connection to engage and be aligned with the tabs?
Hie, i have a similar problem, my e53 3.0i, when i put the key and position 2, the EML light does not come, and when it does that, the car does not start, then i have to wait between 3-10 min. Changed cranckshaft sensor, changed battery, but it still happens, especially when i have driven it for some time. Any idea?
Hey man did you ever get these problems fixed? If so, i was wondering about the crankshaft sensor.. did you replace it yourself? If so got any advice for me on how to go about that?
Need a video on complete removal of the ignition, to include the ignition lock housing. I've got a no crank Key unlocks & locks doors. It's fine on 1st position, fine on second position but absolutely no response in start position. It has done this before and I would simply turn the key back, pull it out and flip it over, then put it in and it would start right up. The power key FOB has not work for 2yrs. since it got ran over, but the key worked. It stranded me 2 weeks ago so I left it overnight. The next day it started right up. I got it home and later went to start and nothing so I got out, locked & unlocked the car, opened and shut a couple of the doors. Then I put key into the 2nd position & put the power widows down. It started. I went somewhere and it started fine to leave. Now it won't start no matter how much i mess with it. I have a new key that will be here tomorrow. If it doesn't work, do you think the switch was progressively getting worse?
Nice day. I need to ask you a question, to connect again in Swich of ignition as it should restart the computer, because friends I cut off the supply of gasoline, ie the X5 has but does not start. I hope you can help me.
I had the tale tell sign of an ignition module fault, airbag light on, no buttons work on the steering wheel, random seat occupancy seat belt warning, no aircon. The vanity mirror test would cause the airbag light to switch off. In my case however there was no need (so far) to change the switch, rather the fault was caused by the lower black trim behind the steering wheel glitching, ie not attached flush but with a slight gap. Pushing it up so that it is flush removes all symptoms.
Battery doesn't stay charged when engine is running, then car loses power slowly, then brake, dsg, 4x4, trans safe light came on. Then i turned off the engine and car cannot be started when i try to turn the engine on, No cranking. So, i called triple AAA and they started the car up with self jump charger. Then 2 days later, same thing happened again and car won't start again.its not alternator because alternator was replaced to new one 6 month ago. Is it bad IGNITION SWITCH or BAD BATTERY? 2004 bmw x5 3.0i
Yosup Kim parasitic battery drain usually caused by the radio turning itself on when the car is shut down Remove the ration fuse and see if that cures it
It could still be the alternator. Sometimes they don't put the correct one in the first (two) times! Had this happen with my 2005 e53. The second one worked like a charm. 😊
My X5 has a code that says: Supply Voltage Pin 15.. Is that the ignition switch?? I have trouble starting it every morning. Cranks 3 times then starts..
I have ordered an ignition switch for a BMW X5 2004 but the part we receive is slightly different then the part switch we are trying to replace. Are there two different ignition switches for our BMW model that are being sold? If so, does anyone no where I can get them both?
In my 2006 BMW X5 when I turn the ignition to the on position it’s continuously is cranking the starter but no start and the temperature gauge immediately goes all the way to the red at the same time. Do you have any ideas what it is? Tia
ive just done mine 728i but i checked it worked before i put it back together ,it was fine it cost me £ 12.00 job done bmw wanted £86.00 + vat .20 minute job .
One thing I would add when you put in the new switch make sure it is clock to properly it needs to match the position of the receiving end steering column there are three positions you need to make sure the switch is matched to the steering column or you will have problems
Hey Titi, it could be a number of things. Does the engine crank over? The first step is to check the battery and make sure it is 100%. If the battery is old or weak (leave a light on or electronics plugged in?) the car will not start. BMW's are particularly sensitive to weak batteries due to the heavy load placed on them from the electronics in the cars.
You must make sure that the new switch is aligned just like the old switch. If it is not...the key blade won't go all the way into the switch (from the barrel side). If you look at the end of the switch (you can see the little white thingy at approx 3:20 into the video), you can compare the two (old vs new) switches to see if they are in the same alignment.
@@BIMMERZEITT it looks almost new!! I have a 2006 X5 with exact interior and the service centers are always surprised to see a Beige interior instead of Black interior on my Silver X5!!
Thank you for the detailed DIY. Unfortunately, BMW advised they do not carry this part anymore but they can get it for me at AUD$211.00. Don’t really have a choice.

8 Years later, and this info is still useful to me. Thanks, a good detailed explanation.

Why was this replaced? What symptoms were you having?
this may be the clearest picture video of a car repair I've ever seen haha. using a DSLR?

I didn't have this problem? I just did the small screws up tight, making sure the ignition switch was on flush.

You’ll probably find that putting it into reverse when the key is out will shut it off
Good job, but you should have started up the car.
